Belmont Park Picks & Predictions — October 18, 2026

8 racesAll Belmont Park picks

Eight races at Belmont Park on a warm, partly cloudy Sunday — 88°F at post time with the turf course expected to be playing fast. That matters today because five of eight races are scheduled on the grass, giving turf form a premium and making surface fitness one of the sharpest edges in the book.

The card leans heavily toward maiden and allowance company, with a couple of claiming sprints mixed in to keep things spicy. It's the kind of afternoon where pace scenarios shift quickly between routes and sprints, so reading the shape of each race correctly can be the difference between cashing and tearing up tickets.

TrackWiz has rated the full field for every race. Three races are open to all readers — Races 1, 2, and 3 — and five premium breakdowns cover the rest of the card, including what we think is the most playable race of the day.

Best Bets

Race 1

Maiden Special Weight · 1 5/16 mi · Turf

A competitive maiden turf route with three closely rated contenders bunched at the top, but Chad Brown's Mistborn holds a meaningful edge over a field of first-timers and lightly raced maidens.

win5MistbornML 7/2

Mistborn tops our TrackWiz ratings at 86.35 — a full five points clear of the next rival — and Chad Brown's barn is one of the best in the business when it comes to developing turf routers. Flavien Prat gets the call, and that jockey-trainer combo at this distance on the grass is exactly the kind of angle that separates contenders from pretenders. The 7/2 morning line feels a touch generous for a horse that projects as the class of this maiden field.

place2Stand the RainML 3/1

Stand the Rain checks in with an 81.25 TrackWiz rating and draws the rail-adjacent two post under Manuel Franco — a jockey who knows how to find position in route races. Miguel Clement is a sharp conditioner on the turf, and at 3/1 on the morning line, this one should be prominent at every call.

show3Sister JeanML 3/1

Sister Jean is right there with Stand the Rain in the ratings at 80.42, making this a genuine three-horse top tier. Edgard Zayas is a savvy hand, and D. Whitworth Beckman has the horse ready for a long turf test. At the same 3/1 morning line as the place pick, she's a natural inclusion in any exacta or trifecta construction.

Race 2

Allowance Optional Claiming · 1 mi · Dirt

Shadow Dragon heads into this allowance optional claimer as a legitimate overlay, with a top TrackWiz rating despite sitting as the third choice on the morning line — setting up a potential value play in the exacta.

win3Shadow DragonML 6/1

Shadow Dragon leads all horses in this field with a TrackWiz rating of 82.71, yet the morning line lists him at 6/1 — significantly longer than the two Linda Rice runners who rank just below him. Kendrick Carmouche is a wily veteran who gets up for big prices, and trainer Gustavo Rodriguez has this horse at a 15% career win rate. The speed figure edge, combined with the overlay price, makes this our top selection in what should be a well-contested mile on the dirt.

place4CaddiemasterML 5/2

Caddiemaster rates just a tick below Shadow Dragon at 82.12 and brings a 20% career win rate to the table — strong for this level. Manuel Franco handles the riding duties, and Linda Rice has done well with similar profiles in allowance company. At 5/2, the price isn't exciting, but the consistency profile supports a top-two finish.

show5Sunday BoyML 2/1

Sunday Boy owns the best average speed figure in the field at 54 and carries a 16% career win rate at a short 2/1 morning line. Christopher Elliott gets the leg up for James T. Ryerson, and while this horse opens as the public choice, the pace scenario on a one-mile dirt track should suit a horse with these kinds of numbers. Worth including in exotics as a reliable third wheel.

Race 3

Maiden Claiming · 6 fur · Turf

Arabian Power is an overwhelming favorite in this maiden claimer on the turf sprint, boasting a 90 TrackWiz rating that dwarfs the rest of the field — but War Profiteer lurks at a price worth a look in the exotics.

win2Arabian PowerML EVN

Arabian Power's TrackWiz rating of 90 is the highest we've seen today across the entire card, and even-money on the morning line reflects the market's confidence. Manuel Franco is in the irons for Brad H. Cox, a trainer-jockey combination that consistently delivers on the front end. In a six-furlong turf sprint against maiden claimers, a horse with this kind of ratings separation should break cleanly and be very hard to beat.

place4War ProfiteerML 10/1

War Profiteer is our place pick at 10/1, which makes this one of the more intriguing value spots on the card. He carries the same average speed figure (55) as the favorite and several other contenders, so he's not outclassed on raw numbers. Samuel Marin is aboard for Edward R. Barker, and at double-digit odds, War Profiteer offers real place-bet upside in a race where the win spot looks locked up.

show3Eske CastleML 9/5

Eske Castle opened as the second choice at 9/5 under Antonio Fresu for Wesley A. Ward, a trainer famous for turning European-bred speedsters into turf sprinters. The rating of 58.67 puts him clearly third in this field behind Arabian Power and War Profiteer, and his presence in the show spot gives conservative bettors a way to stay engaged even if the favorite dominates. Ward's horses tend to fire fresh, which is worth noting here.

Our three free races today span both surfaces and give a solid taste of what's on offer. Mistborn opens the card at 7/2 on 1 5/16 miles of turf — a big ask for a maiden, and that distance alone thins the field of legitimate threats. In Race 2, Shadow Dragon is the one we're most excited about at 6/1 morning line in an Allowance Optional Claiming mile on dirt — that price looks generous given our rating of 82.71, and AOC fields often contain horses dropping in class who are spotted to win. Race 3 brings us back to the turf for a 6-furlong Maiden Claiming sprint where Arabian Power opens as the even-money favorite with our highest free-race rating at 90 — when our model and the morning line agree that strongly, it's worth paying attention.

The turf bias is worth watching all afternoon. On a warm, dry day at Belmont, the grass tends to play quick and true, which generally rewards horses with early tactical speed. Keep that in mind when you're keying race-to-race in any multi-leg wagers.
