Assiniboia Picks & Predictions — October 5, 2026
Monday night racing at Assiniboia Downs and conditions couldn't be much cleaner. Clear skies and a crisp 58°F mean a fast, consistent dirt surface is very much in play — the kind of night where speed figures hold up and pace scenarios play out close to script. Eight races on the card, all on dirt, all business.
Tonight's card mixes claiming battles, a pair of Allowance Optional Claiming spots that tend to draw the most interesting fields, and a Maiden Special Weight in Race 4 that's already drawing some buzz around a 4/5 morning-line favorite. There's something here for every type of player — from the casual bettor looking for a clean single to the serious handicapper building exotics across the back half of the card.
TrackWiz has full analysis locked and loaded. The first three races are on us — free picks, no subscription required. Races 4 through 8 are where the real edge lives, and that's where our premium breakdown earns its keep.
Best Bets
Race 1
Claiming · 7 fur · Dirt
A short claiming field of four at seven furlongs, but don't let the small field fool you — the TrackWiz ratings tell a clear story with one horse standing well above the rest.
Betterlucknexttime (4) is the standout in this spot, and the numbers back it up hard. A TrackWiz rating of 89.42 is comfortably the best in the field, and a 35% career win rate — the highest in this race by a wide margin — signals a horse that knows how to get to the wire first. Trainer Michael Nault puts this one in a favorable claiming condition, and jockey Antonio Whitehall gets the call. At 7/5 on the morning line, there's not a ton of overlay here, but this is a legitimate best bet.
Lt. Norm (3) draws the 6/5 morning line chalk but lands second in our ratings at 62.89. The Sherri Leanne Laing trainee shows an average speed figure of 53, best in the field, and Christopher Roy Mamdeen rides. The pace scenario at seven furlongs could set up nicely for a horse with that kind of tactical speed, making a place finish a solid expectation.
Charming Charlie (1) might be a touch overlooked at 4/1 given that the two favorites attract most of the money. The TrackWiz rating of 45.17 doesn't scream winner, but Sheldon Chickeness aboard for Tom Gardipy Jr. gives this one a competent handler on both sides. In a small field of four, a piece of the board is a real possibility, and this horse makes sense as a show play or for vertical exotic coverage.
Race 2
Maiden Claiming · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
Five winless maidens go at it over five and a half furlongs, and with every horse at zero career wins, pace setup and raw ability metrics are doing the heavy lifting here.
Moonshine Boogie (4) absolutely dominates the TrackWiz ratings in this field with an 88.83 — more than 34 points clear of the next best horse. Trainer Lise Pruitt sends this one out with Damario Bynoe in the irons at 9/5 on the morning line. In a maiden claiming sprint where most entrants have never broken through, that kind of rating separation is hard to ignore as a win play.
Off the Payroll (1) is the morning line favorite at 7/5 and rates second in the field at 54.50, which is an interesting spot — the crowd may like this one but our model gives the edge to Moonshine Boogie. Tom Gardipy Jr. trains and Tyrone Nelson rides, giving this horse a sharp connections angle. If the favorite's price collapses further, the 7/5 ML horse finishing second would still be a useful place-ticket contributor.
When I Saw You (2) rates in at 51.39 — just a tick below stablemate Off the Payroll — and also draws Tom Gardipy Jr. as trainer, this time with Sheldon Chickeness up. Gardipy Jr. having two horses in the field at 7/5 and 3/1 respectively is worth noting; barn confidence seems high. At 3/1, this one offers a touch of value for show tickets or exacta bottom use.
Race 3
Allowance Optional Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
The allowance optional claiming level brings out a competitive five-horse field at six furlongs, with a genuine pace duel shaping up between the two top-rated horses and a morning line favorite that our model has a big question mark over.
Wecanonlyimagine (3) tops the TrackWiz ratings at 85.62 and carries an eye-catching 44% career win rate — that's not a typo, nearly one in every two starts has resulted in a victory. Kerron Khelawan picks up the mount for trainer Jared Brown, a solid pairing at this level. The 4/1 morning line offers genuine value relative to that win rate, making this TrackWiz's top selection in what shapes up as one of the more competitive races on the card.
Out too Late (1) is almost inseparable from the top pick on ratings — 84.49 versus 85.62 — and Antonio Whitehall takes the mount for Brent Hrymak. With a 14% career win rate and an average speed figure of 53, this one has legitimate credentials at the allowance optional claiming level. If the pace gets hot early, a closer profile could set this horse up for a strong late kick to at least land second.
Rocky Bay Rae (4) is the best pure speed figure horse in the field — an average of 54, one point above the rest of the leaders — and Renaldo Cumberbatch rides for Cindy Krasner. A 22% career win rate is respectable, and the 5/1 morning line means there's value if the top two fight each other into tiring. This is a legitimate show play and worth including in the exotics at an accessible price.
We're handing out three free best bets tonight, and they span a range of race types worth paying attention to. Betterlucknexttime opens the card in a 7-furlong Claiming sprint — that extra distance compared to tonight's shorter dashes gives tactical closers a shot, and our rating of 89.42 puts this one near the top of the card. In Race 2, Moonshine Boogie draws our eye in a Maiden Claiming sprint at 5½ furlongs — the 9/5 morning line suggests the market agrees, but there's still value to be found with the right pace setup. Race 3 shifts up in class to Allowance Optional Claiming territory, where Wecanonlyimagine at 4/1 looks like a genuine overlay against a softer field — that's the kind of number we like to see on a horse our model rates at 85.62.
The connecting thread across these three? On a clear, cool night like tonight, early speed tends to be rewarded on Assiniboia's dirt — but seven furlongs in Race 1 gives stamina horses a fighting chance to run down the pace. Keep that bias in mind as you build your tickets.
