Assiniboia Picks & Predictions — September 30, 2026

7 racesAll Assiniboia picks

Fall racing at Assiniboia Downs doesn't get much better than this. A crisp, clear Wednesday afternoon with temperatures sitting right at 56°F means a fast, consistent dirt surface — the kind of conditions where speed figures hold up and pace scenarios play out exactly the way you'd draw them up. Seven races are on the card today, and there's something for everyone from the casual bettor to the serious multi-race player.

The headline event is Race 4, a Stakes race going 7½ furlongs — the longest and most prestigious test of the afternoon. Beyond that, five claiming races and an Allowance Optional Claiming round out a card that offers plenty of angles. Our TrackWiz ratings flagged a couple of eye-catching figures today, including a few horses whose morning lines look generous against what the data is telling us.

Best Bets

Race 1

Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt

The morning line favorite looks vulnerable at short odds, opening the door for a pair of overlooked horses whose TrackWiz ratings suggest the public is way off on the true order of finish.

win2Rugged RoosterML 10/1

Rugged Rooster is the standout TrackWiz value play of this opener, posting a field-best rating of 76.88 despite being dismissed at 10/1 on the morning line. His 23% career win rate is the highest in the field, meaning he's a proven winner who shows up on the big day. Trainer Terry James Cole and jockey Neville Stephenson link up with a horse who has real class in a spot where others are being overbet. When the rating and the win percentage both point the same direction at double-digit odds, you take a long, hard look.

place3Little TribuneML 15/1

Little Tribune at 15/1 looks like a throwaway on paper, but a TrackWiz rating of 69.58 puts him solidly in the mix for a piece of the pie. His 9% career win rate is modest, but in a short field where the favorite looks shaky, horses like this tend to grab a place check. Trainer Robert Maybin has him live enough to factor at a price that makes the exacta very attractive.

show1Silver SpicedML 6/5

Silver Spiced is the 6/5 morning line chalk, and the public money will be here all day — but our rating of 60.59 ranks her third in the field, well behind Rugged Rooster and Little Tribune. She's worth including in your exotics for show coverage given her first-post advantage and jockey Shavon Townsend in the irons, but betting her to win at this price is a tough sell when better-rated horses are available at far superior odds.

Race 2

Claiming · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt

A heavy favorite commands attention at 1/2 on the morning line, but our ratings tell a very different story — creating a rare spot where fading the chalk could be a profitable move.

win1Norma NoML 7/2

Norma No is the TrackWiz top pick here despite being installed at 7/2, and the numbers back it up hard. Her rating of 86.35 leads the entire field, and a 40% career win rate under jockey Kerron Khelawan is elite — you just don't find horses hitting 40% across their career unless they're consistently competitive at their level. Trainer Robert Maybin gets the nod, and at 7/2 while the public hammers the chalk, Norma No offers genuine overlay value in a 5 1/2-furlong sprint.

place4Short SpeechML 5/1

Short Speech owns a solid 81.75 TrackWiz rating and a 25% career win rate, which makes him a legitimate contender for the place spot at a very generous 5/1 morning line. Trainer Jerry Gourneau also saddles Layla's Song in this race, but Short Speech is clearly the stable's stronger runner by the numbers. Jockey Damario Bynoe gives him a capable hand, and at this price, he's a must-use underneath in exactas.

show2Tap the ParlayML 1/2

Tap the Parlay is the 1/2 morning line favorite and carries a gaudy 44% career win rate, so you understand why the public loves her. But a TrackWiz rating of 74.52 slots her third in our rankings, nearly 12 points behind Norma No — suggesting she may be a vulnerable short-price chalky. Including her in exotics for show coverage is sensible given her win history, but backing her at minus money to win is where TrackWiz diverges from the crowd.

Race 3

Allowance Optional Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt

A dominant class standout threatens to wire the field in this Allowance Optional Claiming sprint, but a formidable second choice makes the exactas worth building out.

win3Mechanic SusieML EVN

Mechanic Susie is as close to a standout as you'll find on this card — a TrackWiz rating of 90.0 leads not just this race but the entire day's card, and a 46% career win rate with trainer Elton Dickey is frankly remarkable. Posted at even money on the morning line with jockey Antonio Whitehall aboard, she's the rare case where the favorite is actually backed by elite numbers rather than just public perception. In a 6-furlong dirt sprint at this level, a horse who wins nearly half her starts is a horse you're going to be on.

place4Foothills Blvd.ML 2/1

Foothills Blvd. is no pushover here — an 86.98 TrackWiz rating and a 33% career win rate under Roger Hewitt makes her a genuine contender, not just a place filler. She's the only realistic threat to Mechanic Susie and at 2/1 offers a reasonable price to key underneath in exacta and trifecta wagers. Trainer Ralph Zaft has her primed, and if Mechanic Susie runs into any trouble early, Foothills Blvd. has the numbers to capitalize.

show1ChaiML 3/1

Chai rounds out the exotics as a legitimate show option — a 71.04 TrackWiz rating and 17% career win rate gives her a real shot to hit the board in a five-horse field. Trainer Judy Hunter has her in against tougher competition at the AOC level, and with jockey Damario Bynoe riding, there's enough upside to slot her into trifecta combinations at a 3/1 price that makes the ticket worth building.

The first three races are on the house, and they're worth your full attention. Race 1 kicks things off with a 6-furlong dirt claiming sprint where Rugged Rooster jumps off the page as a 10/1 morning line shot with a TrackWiz rating of 76.88 — that kind of price on a horse our model respects is exactly the type of value angle we love to flag early. In Race 2, Norma No checks in at 7/2 with a strong 86.35 rating over 5½ furlongs, making her one of the better-priced plays on the card relative to her score. Then Race 3 brings us an Allowance Optional Claiming test at 6 furlongs where Mechanic Susie earns a sharp 90.00 rating and comes in as the even-money favorite — when our top rating and the morning line agree, that's a horse you circle.

On a clear, fast track like we have today, early pace will be at a premium in these shorter sprints. Watch for the dirt to play true — horses that can get to the lead or sit just off it without burning too much fuel early are going to be tough to catch. All three of our free picks fit that profile.
