Santa Anita Picks & Predictions — October 11, 2026

10 racesAll Santa Anita picks

We've got a full 10-race card at Santa Anita today under cloudy skies and a comfortable 67°F — ideal conditions for the turf courses, which see action in six of the ten races. That's a lot of green to navigate, and pace scenarios on the lawn can shift in a hurry, so paying attention to early speed versus closers is going to matter today.

The card runs the full spectrum from maiden special weights to a turf stakes, giving bettors plenty of angles to work with. A couple of big-price horses catch our eye in the premium races — including a double-digit morning line shot in Race 6 that our model rates more competitively than the oddsmakers do. More on that for subscribers.

Three races are open to everyone today, including a pair of maiden special weights and a starter optional claiming on the turf. If you're newer to the game, maiden special weights are essentially the debut or early-career races for horses that haven't broken their maiden (won their first race) yet — and they can be tricky to handicap. We'll walk you through what we're seeing.

Best Bets

Race 1

Maiden Special Weight · 6 fur · Turf

An eleven-horse maiden turf sprint with several first-time starters making this a wide-open affair — the morning line tells the story, with the Todd-adjacent connections split across multiple contenders and no dominant pace shape in sight.

win9King AnunobyML 2/1

King Anunoby draws the top TrackWiz rating in this field at 58.33 and posts the field's best average speed figure at 56, giving him a measurable edge in a wide-open maiden. The 2/1 morning line makes him the public's choice, and Joel Rosario in the irons is never a coincidence — connections clearly mean business. Trainer Michael W. McCarthy saddles him alongside stablemate Magic Time, but the program number 9 gets the A-rider, which says everything. In a race this murky, the horse with the best numbers and the best jockey is where we start.

place2Another WarriorML 4/1

Another Warrior (4/1 morning line) carries a 55.0 TrackWiz rating — second-best in the field — and Peter Miller is one of the sharper maiden turf trainers on the Southern California circuit. Jockey Hector Isaac Berrios has been getting live mounts lately, and an opening-day turf sprint setup suits a horse breaking from the rail-friendly 2 hole.

show5Jimmy's WinchesterML 9/2

Jimmy's Winchester at 9/2 draws the attention of trainer Doug O'Neill, who knows how to have a first-timer ready, and Emisael Jaramillo keeps the ride, suggesting connections are satisfied with the work tab. The 54.17 TrackWiz rating lands him in the middle of this pack, and in an 11-horse maiden with overlays everywhere, he's a sensible exotics anchor to round out the ticket.

Race 2

Maiden Special Weight · 6 fur · Dirt

Bob Baffert sends out both the morning-line favorite and the second choice in this short five-horse maiden dirt sprint, making it a de facto barn battle with a few live outsiders lurking.

win1Bold TypeML 4/5

Bold Type is the standout here — a 60.0 TrackWiz rating tops the field and the 4/5 morning line reflects real public confidence. An average speed figure of 55 backs up the numbers, and Juan J. Hernandez aboard a Baffert barn favorite on the Santa Anita main track is about as reliable a combination as you'll find early in the card. This is a short field with a clear class edge — sometimes the favorite is just right.

place2KivoML 5/2

Kivo is the other half of the Baffert one-two punch, rated 57.5 by TrackWiz and listed at 5/2. His average speed of 54 trails Bold Type's slightly, but if stablemate Bold Type goes wide or encounters trouble, Kivo is perfectly placed to sweep up the pieces. Emisael Jaramillo rode some sharp horses this meet, and barn loyalty might mean this one has a tight prep under its belt.

show5Unleashed AmbitionML 9/2

Unleashed Ambition at 9/2 with Joel Rosario in the saddle is too interesting to ignore as an exotics piece in a five-horse field. Trainer Adam Kitchingman doesn't flood the entries, so when he shows up at maiden special weight with Rosario, there's usually a reason. The 54.17 TrackWiz rating is respectable and puts him squarely in the mix if either Baffert horse underperforms.

Race 3

Starter Optional Claiming · 6 fur · Turf

A starter optional claiming turf sprint with a clear top two on paper — but the gap between the first and third choices in our ratings makes this more of a true match race than the full field suggests.

win1Tam's Little AngelML 3/1

Tam's Little Angel has the highest TrackWiz rating in the field at 87.08 — a full twelve points clear of the next competitor — and a 25% career win rate that speaks to consistency. The average speed figure of 57 leads all runners, and trainer Hector O. Palma sends her out at 3/1, which looks like fair value given the raw numbers. Tiago Josue Pereira gets the call and has been in solid form this season; this looks like a horse that should simply be too good for this spot.

place3Wandering KirbyML EVN

Wandering Kirby is the morning-line even-money choice, which means the market sees this as a head-to-head duel with Tam's Little Angel. A 41% career win rate is elite for any horse at any level, and trainer Leonard Powell with Umberto Rispoli up is a sharp combination on the turf. The 75.35 TrackWiz rating says she's legitimately dangerous, even if we give the slight edge to the top pick.

show5SyntaxML 5/2

Syntax (5/2) carries a 70.02 TrackWiz rating and the services of Joel Rosario for trainer Michael W. McCarthy — a combo that routinely fires in spots like this. A 20% career win rate is solid for a horse stepping into starter optional company, and at 5/2 there's enough return to warrant inclusion in exacta and trifecta coverage behind the top two.

Our three free races today are Races 1, 2, and 3 — and they paint an interesting picture right out of the gate. On the turf in Race 1, King Anunoby opens at 2/1 on the morning line and earns a solid rating from our model. The cloudy, mild conditions should keep the turf firm and true, which sets up well for horses with pace versatility. In Race 2, we flip to the dirt with Bold Type coming in as the heavy 4/5 chalk — our rating backs the public's enthusiasm here, though favorites in maiden special weights can be volatile, so manage your expectations on the return. Race 3 brings our highest-rated free pick of the bunch: Tam's Little Angel at 3/1 in the starter optional claiming on the turf, with a rating of 87 that leads the entire free portion of the card by a wide margin.

The common thread across these early races is turf form and how horses handle a slightly muted, overcast day at Santa Anita. We don't see any major track bias indicators that would favor one running style over another, so look for horses with clean trips in their recent lines rather than betting exclusively on speed or closers.
