Free Mountaineer Picks & Predictions — October 11, 2026
Rain is falling at Mountaineer today, and at 62°F it's not going anywhere fast. That's the first thing you need to know heading into this 8-race Sunday card, because three of the first three races are carded on turf — and a wet Mountaineer turf course can flip a race on its head. Keep an eye on the scratch wire before you commit any money to races 1 through 3.
If the turf holds, we've got a genuinely interesting opener with some overlay potential in a turf claiming sprint, a maiden special weight that could produce a big price, and an allowance optional claiming route where our top pick is sitting at a very workable 6/1 on the morning line. Then the card shifts to dirt for five straight races — and that's where the serious bettors are going to earn their money today.
Eight races. Three free. Five premium. Let's get into it.
3 Free Races at Mountaineer
Race 1
Claiming · 7 fur · Turf
A massive 14-horse turf claimer with a clear class standout in the field, but plenty of speed and intrigue in the middle of the pack to complicate exacta construction.
Hurricane Debbie is the obvious top selection here, and the numbers back it up emphatically — her TrackWiz rating of 87.08 is nearly 18 points clear of the second-rated horse in this field. Jockey Luis Raul Rivera gets the call, and paired with trainer Anthony Farrior, this barn has a knack for placing horses in spots where they can dominate. Her 16% career win rate is respectable, and her average speed figure of 55 is the best in the field, giving her a real edge going 7 furlongs on the turf. Morning line at 3/1 is fair value — don't expect her to drift much.
Fair Trade opens at 6/1 on the morning line and carries the second-best TrackWiz rating (69.69) in the race, making her a logical place play in a crowded field. Trainer Jami C. Poole has done well placing this horse, and jockey Elijah Greenidge should be able to settle into a comfortable spot on the turf and fire late. A 10% career win rate in a field this large still translates to solid place equity.
Machen Reigns sits third in our ratings at 67.87 and shares the 3/1 morning line with Hurricane Debbie, which suggests the public will be looking at this one too. Trainer Tomas Martinez saddles up Luis Tapara, a combination worth watching at Mountaineer. An average speed figure of 52 is middle-of-the-pack, but in a 14-horse turf sprint, hitting the board is well within reach for a horse with this profile.
Race 2
Maiden Special Weight · 7 fur · Turf
A wide-open maiden special weight on the turf with two top-tier contenders separating themselves from the pack — but in a field of first-time winners, anything can happen.
Hayami is our top selection in this maiden special weight, posting an 84.17 TrackWiz rating — second-best in the field — while opening at a very generous 5/1 on the morning line. Trainer Eric R. Reed is a respected name who knows how to condition a horse for debut or early-career efforts, and Charle Oliveros brings solid piloting ability to the assignment. Her average speed figure of 51 is modest, but in a field where all career win percentages are zero by definition, the rating gap matters most.
Have a Happy draws in as the morning-line favorite at even money with a field-high TrackWiz rating of 80.40, and trainer Juan Carlos Gotera is dialed in with this one. Luis Alberto Batista aboard gives the horse a polished pilot, and her 53 average speed figure ties several others in the field. Even at short odds, she's a necessary inclusion in exotic tickets.
Working On It opens at 7/2 with a 67.15 rating — third in the field — giving her clear upside as a show selection and exotic player. Trainer Timothy M. Collins sends this one out with Charle Oliveros in the irons, and she brings one of the better speed averages in the race at 53. In a wide-open maiden turf sprint, she's the kind of horse who can sneak onto the board when the top two battle it out.
Race 3
Allowance Optional Claiming · 1 mi · Turf
An allowance optional claiming mile on the turf where TrackWiz analysis reveals a clear top-rated horse hiding beneath an inflated morning line — pace could get complicated with multiple capable closers in tow.
Replevin is the standout pick here with a commanding 82.71 TrackWiz rating, yet opens at 6/1 — that's a significant overlay compared to his profile. Trainer Jeff Fletcher sends him out with Brandon Tapara in the irons, a capable pairing. His average speed figure of 54 ranks among the top in this field, and at a mile on the turf, horses with staying power tend to reward patient backers. This is the kind of price you circle and play confidently.
Keithsendshelloooo carries the second-best TrackWiz rating in the race (71.67) and is the 2/1 morning-line favorite, making him a logical place anchor in your exotic tickets. Trainer Bernard G. Dunham also sends out We Ready (#13) in this same race, which tells you the barn is loaded in this spot. His 14% career win rate is solid, and a speed average of 51 suggests he can settle and pick up pieces late.
Valentine Bug rounds out our top three at 67.44 and opens at a very fair 7/1, giving her some real value in the show slot and across exotic combinations. Trainer Jay P. Bernardini — who also trains Mr. Business in this race — clearly has a strong opinion about this field, and Valentine Bug's 20% career win rate and 55 average speed figure are the kind of numbers that hold up at a mile on the turf. At that price, she's worth including in trifectas.
Our three free races cover the entire turf portion of the card, and the rain hanging over Mountaineer is the common thread tying them together. Hurricane Debbie (Race 1, 3/1 ML) earns our top TrackWiz rating on the card's first half at 87.08 — a number that holds up well in off conditions if the turf stays open. In Race 2, Hayami draws our eye at 5/1 in what figures to be a wide-open maiden field where morning-line favorites in this spot at Mountaineer are a historically weak bet. Then in Race 3, Replevin is the kind of class-solid horse that quietly shows up at 6/1 in allowance optional claiming routes — patient money is rewarded here.
The overarching angle across all three free picks: pace is going to be honest on a wet, tiring turf course, which means closers and pace-pressers with proven stamina get a significant edge over pure front-runners today. That shapes how we're thinking about all three races — and it sets the tone for the dirt card to come.
