Free Mountaineer Picks & Predictions for Today — October 6, 2026
Tuesday night at Mountaineer Park and conditions couldn't be much cleaner — 57°F under clear skies with the turf course set to play a starring role early in the card. Eight races are on the slate, and the first half of the night leans heavily on the green stuff, with three of the first four races run on the turf before the dirt takes over from Race 4 on.
That turf-to-dirt split is worth keeping in mind tonight. Surface versatility — or the lack of it — can make or break your tickets, and TrackWiz analysis has flagged some interesting pace dynamics once we shift to the main track. The cool autumn air in West Virginia has a way of getting horses running, and tonight's field sizes look competitive enough to keep the pools honest.
Three races are open for everyone tonight, with five more locked behind the premium wall. Whether you're a casual Tuesday punter or a grinder building multi-race tickets, there's plenty to dig into.
3 Free Races Today at Mountaineer
Race 1
Claiming · 1 mi · Turf
A wide-open turf mile in the opener with a clear class standout at a fair price, though a pair of double-digit morning line shots add intrigue to the exotics.
My Two Aunt Joans is the most straightforward top selection on the card. Her TrackWiz rating of 88.54 towers over this field, and jockey Norberto Arroyo, Jr. gives her a capable pilot. At 2/1 on the morning line, she's not exactly a gift, but that number is justified by her separation from the competition — the next-closest rated horse checks in nearly 17 points lower. With trainer Alysha Robillard sending her out, this looks like a horse that belongs at the top of the ticket.
Beachwalker is the second-highest rated horse in the field at 71.91 despite carrying a 4/1 morning line, and trainer Juan C. Vazquez has two horses entered today — always worth noting as a barn that's active and engaged. The 10% career win rate is modest, but on a mile turf route, closers and tactical horses can get into the framing positions more easily, making him a logical place play.
Wiley Willard is the surprise inclusion here — 15/1 on the morning line but backed by a TrackWiz rating of 55.86 and an impressive 29% career win rate that far outpaces his odds. Trainer Jay P. Bernardini also has Parade of Fears in this race, so the barn clearly likes the conditions. Wiley Willard looks like live exotic value at a number that overstates his true chances.
Race 2
Allowance Optional Claiming · 1 mi · Turf
This 14-horse allowance optional claiming mile on turf is loaded with mid-tier horses, but one horse's career stats blow the field apart and he's available at a fair price.
Nate the Great is a standout in a big field, posting a TrackWiz rating of 87.08 — easily tops in this race — backed by a career win rate of 40% that is frankly elite at this level. Trainer Jeffrey D. Allen sends him out with Luis Alberto Batista in the irons, a capable combination. At 3/1 on the morning line, you're getting reasonable value on what our analysis projects as a clear top choice in a wide field.
Z Dancer brings a solid 71.31 TrackWiz rating and represents the Juan C. Vazquez barn, which has multiple runners today across the card — a sign the stable is rolling. The 5/1 morning line is generous given the rating, and for place purposes, this is a horse that figures to be in the hunt late on a one-mile turf course that rewards tactical runners.
Battuta d'Oro at 9/1 is the value piece in the exotics. Trained by Juan C. Vazquez — same barn as Z Dancer — this horse carries a 69.98 rating and a 15% career win rate, which plays well in a 14-horse field where chaos is a factor. Having two horses in the same race from a hot trainer can sometimes lead to one sneaking into the frame at a big number.
Race 3
Claiming · 7 fur · Turf
Three horses are bunched within a point of each other at the top of the ratings in this seven-furlong turf claimer, setting up a legitimate battle for the win and terrific exacta possibilities.
Bring Me a Check posts the highest TrackWiz rating in the field at 82.92 and lands the advantageous inside post at No. 2 in a seven-furlong turf sprint. With a 17% career win rate and Luis Tapara in the saddle for trainer Juan Raul Aguirre, this horse has the tools to dictate or sit just off the pace. The 2/1 morning line is fair for a horse that leads on ratings, and in a race this competitive, getting the top-rated horse at 2/1 is not something to ignore.
Small Field is right behind at 82.08 with a career win rate of 21% — a strong strike rate that suggests this horse converts when the conditions align. Trainer Shane Meyers and jockey Alexander Chavez team up from the 5-post, and at 3/1 on the morning line, Small Field is a legitimate win threat who figures prominently in all the horizontal wagers. The pace scenario on this turf sprint could set up perfectly for a horse with that kind of consistency.
My Balboa rounds out the top three at 81.04 — the third horse within two points of the leader — and brings a 22% career win rate that demands respect. Francisco Garcia gets the mount for trainer Jennifer A. Johnson, and at 5/1, My Balboa is the best-priced of the top trio. Including all three in a trifecta makes a lot of sense given how tightly matched these horses are.
The three free races tonight are a solid sampler of what Mountaineer is serving up. We open with a turf mile in Race 1, where My Two Aunt Joans (morning line 2/1, TrackWiz rating 88.54) looks like the class of the field — a horse we're comfortable anchoring early tickets around. Race 2 steps up in class to an Allowance Optional Claiming mile on turf, and Nate the Great (3/1 ML, 87.08 rating) is our top choice in what should be a more nuanced pace scenario. By Race 3, we're back to a claiming spot, this time at 7 furlongs on the turf, and Bring Me a Check (2/1 ML, 82.92 rating) is the name to know — though the slightly lower rating signals a more contested race, so keep an eye on the overlay potential in the exotics.
One thread tying these free picks together: all three are on turf, and Mountaineer's grass course has historically rewarded pace-pressing runners in cool-weather conditions. If the early fractions go fast tonight, closers may struggle. Keep that in mind when you're building your exacta and trifecta keys.
