Mountaineer Picks & Predictions — October 12, 2026
Mountaineer Park is rolling out an 8-race Monday night card under clear skies with temperatures sitting at a crisp 65°F — ideal conditions for the turf courses to play fast and true. If you love grass racing, tonight's your card: three of the first three races are run on the turf, giving us a nice early-evening cluster of green-course action before the card shifts to dirt.
The mix of conditions tonight runs the gamut — Allowance openers, a Ratings Handicap with a juicy longshot angle, and a pair of Maiden Special Weights where early form can be deceptive. Eight races, plenty of angles, and TrackWiz analysis covering every single one of them.
Best Bets
Race 1
Allowance · 7 fur · Turf
A deep 14-horse turf allowance at seven furlongs where two co-favorites battle for supremacy, but the TrackWiz ratings reveal a clear separation at the top — this race has a pair of standouts and a lot of pretenders filling out the field.
Zealous Storm earns the top TrackWiz rating in this field at 88.54 and comes in as the morning-line co-favorite at 2/1, and those two data points tell the same story. The 41% career win rate is genuinely elite — that kind of conversion is rare at any level and suggests a horse that fires consistently when conditions are right. Jockey Elijah Greenidge gets the call for trainer Jami C. Poole, and with an average speed figure of 53, Zealous Storm profiles as a horse that doesn't need a fast pace to produce her best. At the morning line, the price is short, but the credentials justify it.
Cowboy Roy is the other 2/1 shot on the morning line and matches Zealous Storm as a co-favorite, but the TrackWiz rating of 83.94 puts him a clear notch below in our model. What stands out here is the average speed figure of 54 — actually a tick higher than the top pick — which means Cowboy Roy has the raw pace to be competitive at seven furlongs on the lawn. Norberto Arroyo, Jr. is in the irons for trainer Claudie Marshall Godsey, Jr., and with a 7% career win rate, the horse may need things to set up perfectly, making the place spot the safer play.
Finding Candy opens at 3/1 on the morning line and checks in with a solid TrackWiz rating of 71.51, which makes the price look like mild value in a race where the top two are both at 2/1. The 7% career win rate tells you this horse tends to hang around without sealing the deal, which fits the show profile nicely — he's capable of being right there at the wire without necessarily closing the deal. Trainer Jeff Fletcher sends him out with Yuri Yaranga up, and in a field this wide, a horse with a mid-70s rating hitting the board is a realistic outcome.
Race 2
Claiming · 1 mi · Turf
On paper this looks like a two-horse race at the top, but a turf mile claiming event with a 2/1 favorite and a legitimate 12/1 shot in our show spot means the exotics could get interesting if the chalk stumbles.
Hot Cocoa is the clear class of this field by our ratings, posting an 88.54 — the highest mark in the race and a full 17 points clear of the next-best runner. Trainer Jay P. Bernardini sends her out at 2/1 on the morning line with Deshawn L. Parker aboard, a jockey who knows this track well. The 53 average speed figure is tops in the field, and while the 12% career win rate isn't flashy, it's supported by a horse that clearly produces her best efforts in the right spots. At 2/1 on the chalk, Hot Cocoa is the kind of solid favorite you can confidently anchor your exotics around.
Serene Waters brings the second-best TrackWiz rating in the field (71.47) and, crucially, the highest average speed figure in the race at 55 — that's a meaningful edge over the competition in a turf mile where sustained pace matters. Trainer John Fennessy sends her out at 3/1 with Joe Stokes up, and at that price, she represents genuine value as a place horse if Hot Cocoa proves tough to beat. An 8% career win rate suggests she may not always deliver the knockout punch, but hitting the board at 3/1 is a realistic and profitable outcome.
Red Drapes at 12/1 on the morning line is our TrackWiz value play for the exotics here — a 60.18 rating and 15% career win rate that suggests she belongs at this level, even if the morning line doesn't reflect it yet. Trainer Eric R. Reed pairs her with Charle Oliveros, and a 15% career win conversion is actually one of the better marks in this field outside the top two. If the pace scenario sets up for closers in this turf mile, Red Drapes could sneak into the exacta or trifecta at a price that makes the wager worthwhile.
Race 3
Maiden Special Weight · 7 fur · Turf
Maiden Special Weight on the turf at seven furlongs — all first-time or lightly raced maidens, so we're leaning on model ratings and speed figures rather than race records, with one horse standing well above the pack.
Kukuk is the standout in this MSW field with a 87.08 TrackWiz rating and the highest average speed figure among the contenders at 54 — that combination is hard to ignore when you're handicapping maidens with no win percentage to lean on. The morning-line odds of 3/1 suggest the market respects this horse too, but there may still be some value if the tote reflects public money drifting to the 2/1 shot. Trainer Nestor R. Rivera puts Jose A. Bracho in the saddle, and with Kukuk showing the raw speed capacity our model projects, this is the horse to beat on paper.
Data Warrior opens at 7/1 on the morning line and earns a 74.83 TrackWiz rating — second-best in the field — with an average speed figure of 54 that ties Kukuk at the top. Trainer Theodore C. Gregory sends him out with Luis Negron aboard, and the combination of strong model numbers and a double-digit morning-line price makes Data Warrior an excellent place horse in the exotics. In a maiden race where outcomes are inherently uncertain, getting 7/1 on the second-rated horse is exactly the kind of overlay you want to exploit.
Trophy Husband checks in at 5/2 on the morning line — the morning-line favorite in this race — which creates an interesting tension with our win pick. The 64.69 TrackWiz rating is third in the field, but the market price suggests connections and bettors see something to like here. Trainer Jay P. Bernardini, who is active throughout this card, sends him with Luis Negron up, and in a wide-open maiden field, a horse rated third by our model at 5/2 is a reasonable show anchor without overcommitting.
We're unlocking the first three races for all readers tonight, and they set up beautifully. Zealous Storm tops our ratings in the Race 1 Allowance at 88.54 — matching the highest mark on the entire card — and gets to do it over 7 furlongs of turf at a very fair 2/1 morning line. Race 2 shifts to a mile on the turf where Hot Cocoa earns the same elite 88.54 TrackWiz rating in a Claiming field that looks beatable. Then Race 3 brings us a Maiden Special Weight on the turf with Kukuk sitting at 3/1 on the morning line — a touch of value in a wide-open maiden field.
The connecting thread across all three free picks? The turf. With cool, dry air and no rain in the forecast, the going should be consistent, and our ratings favor horses that can handle a firm-ish surface and rate cleanly off the pace. All three of tonight's free top picks project well in those conditions.
