Monmouth Park Picks & Predictions — September 7, 2026
Labor Day weekend winds down at Monmouth Park with a crisp 8-race Sunday card, and the weather couldn't be more cooperative — clear skies and 75°F means the turf courses should be playing fast and true. When the grass is firm and the sun is out at the Jersey Shore, speed figures tend to hold up and turf specialists get every advantage. Keep that in mind as you work through today's card.
Five of the eight races are contested on turf, which gives the day a distinctly European feel — plenty of late-running types, pace scenarios that can flip on a dime, and morning lines that don't always tell the full story. The mix of maiden special weights, claimers, and an allowance optional claiming race in Race 7 means there's something for every kind of bettor, from straight win players to exotic hunters building multi-race tickets.

Maiden Special Weight · 1 mi · Turf
Chad Brown saddles two of the top three in this maiden turf mile, giving the barn a stranglehold on the top of the market — but Sandrine gives the field a live outside shot at cracking the exacta.
She's Georgeous tops our TrackWiz ratings at 58.33 and draws the rail under Jorge Vargas Jr. in what shapes up as a classic Chad Brown turf maiden setup. Brown is one of the premier grass conditioners in the country, and his first-time starters on the turf at routes are a perennial angle worth following. The morning line of 2/1 is fair, and she's the one to beat.
Stablemate Tax Proposal (5/2) gives Brown a two-pronged attack here, and with a 57.50 rating, she's nearly as well-regarded as the top pick. First-time starters with no speed figure on record can be tricky to assess, but Brown's ability to have horses ready first out on the grass is well-documented — she's a natural fit in the exacta underneath.
Sandrine rates third on our sheet at 56.67 and brings an average speed figure of 53 to the table — modest but competitive in this field of first-timers. Chantal Sutherland gets the call for Timothy Hills, and the 3/1 morning line gives her enough juice to make her worth including in trifecta coverage.
Race 2
Maiden Special Weight · 1 mi 70 yd · Dirt
Crazy Diamond enters this maiden dirt route as a significant standout on our ratings, creating a surprising disconnect with a 4/1 morning line that sets up a potential overlay situation.
Crazy Diamond is the most interesting number on the board — our TrackWiz rating of 85.62 blows away the rest of this field by a wide margin, yet the morning line is a generous 4/1. Edwin Gonzalez rides for trainer Lindsay Schultz, and with an average speed figure of 53 already on record, this horse has shown something. At that price, this is the kind of disconnect our analysis was built to find.
First Mover is one of two Chad Brown runners in this race and rates 58.33, good enough for second on our sheet among horses with a morning line of 2/1. Brown's maidens on the dirt can take a start or two to hit their best, but they rarely run poorly — a place finish is a realistic baseline expectation for this one.
Oxford Street opens at 5/2 for trainer Jorge Delgado and rates 57.50, tied with First Mover but sitting in the number one post. No speed figure on record means we're handicapping on projection, but the morning line suggests the connections are confident. Solid show inclusion in trifectas behind the top two.
Race 3
Claiming · 5 1/2 fur · Turf
A wide-open turf sprint at 5½ furlongs with three horses rating above 65 and the top two on our board carrying nearly identical speed figures — pace will be crucial on this surface.
April Spun is our top-rated horse in this race at 79.79 and represents excellent value at 8/1 on the morning line — that's the definition of an overlay if the number holds. She carries an average speed figure of 56, the second-best in the field, and Pedro Cotto Jr. gets the mount. A 10% career win rate in claiming company suggests she's competitive when conditions align, and this looks like a spot that suits her.
Clean Winner is no slouch — an 18% career win rate is among the best in this field, and a rating of 79.10 makes her a legitimate contender at 5/2. Christian Maragh takes the mount for Silvino Ramirez, and the matching 54 average speed figure means she'll be running a similar race to several rivals — but her win percentage suggests she knows how to close the deal.
Bella Bello Banker rates 72.77 and has a 16% career win rate, which is respectable in a nine-horse claiming field. Trainer Juan Carlos Avila also has Lady Hathor in here, giving the barn a two-pronged attack — Carlos Rojas rides Bella Bello Banker, and a 54 average speed figure keeps her in the mix. Good show/trifecta piece at 4/1.
The free portion of today's card gives you a nice cross-section of surfaces and race types to work with. She's Georgeous opens the day as the morning-line favorite on the turf mile in Race 1 — she's our top pick there, though the 2/1 price demands respect from the competition, so pace scenario matters. In Race 2, Crazy Diamond earns an 85.62 TrackWiz rating in a dirt maiden special weight going a mile and 70 yards — that's a strong number for the maiden ranks, and dirt runners on a clear, dry day at Monmouth tend to reward confident handicapping. The real eye-catcher among the free picks is Race 3's April Spun, who comes in at 8/1 on the morning line despite a 79.79 rating. On a 5½-furlong turf sprint, that's a legitimate value play angle worth digging into.
One thread connecting all three free races: today's firm turf and dry dirt should favor horses with clean early foot or proven form on fast surfaces. Don't sleep on pace in the maiden races — fields without established form lines can produce surprises, and identifying who controls the tempo early is often the difference between cashing and tearing up tickets.
