Lone Star Picks & Predictions — October 15, 2026
It's a crisp Thursday afternoon at Lone Star Park — clear skies, 87°F, and the dirt is locked in. Eight races of pure quarter horse speed are on the menu today, and conditions look about as good as you'll get this deep into October in Grand Prairie. Fast tracks tend to favor horses with early punch, so keep that in mind as you build your tickets.
The card leans heavily on short-burst sprints — we're talking distances ranging from a blink-and-you'll-miss-it 110 yards all the way out to 550 yards, which practically qualifies as a distance race on this circuit. There's a mix of maiden claimers, allowance company, and straight claiming action, giving us plenty of angles to work with across all eight races.
Best Bets
Race 1
Allowance Optional Claiming · 300 yd · Dirt
The morning line favorite gets bypassed by our model here — Poppin's top TrackWiz rating flips the script in this 300-yard Allowance Optional Claiming opener, setting up a potentially juicy upset over the chalk.
Poppin (No. 4) carries the field's highest TrackWiz rating at 79.79 despite going off at 8/1 on the morning line — that's the kind of gap our model loves to exploit. Trainer Harvey Baeza sends him out with Victor Manuel Urieta, Jr. in the irons, a sharp booking for a race like this. The 5% career win rate looks modest, but in the sprint quarter-horse format at 300 yards, a single strong gate break can erase a lot of history fast.
Wl Sexy Superhero (No. 1) is the morning line co-favorite at 2/1 for a reason — a 74.01 rating puts her second in this field and Jose R. Herbert gets the call for trainer Gilberto Gonzalez. With a 7% career win rate, she's at least shown she knows how to reach the winner's circle, and at 2/1 she should fire a competitive effort for at least the place hole.
Chicks Dig Tate (No. 8) is the public's choice at 8/5 and while our model has Poppin on top, don't fade this one completely — a 22% career win rate is the best in the field by a wide margin and trainer Gary K. Walker sends her out with Cordarelton J. Benn. At short odds she's a natural show hedge, and that win percentage demands respect even in exotics.
Race 2
Maiden Claiming · 300 yd · Dirt
A deep 12-horse Maiden Claiming field at 300 yards, but there's a clear class standout — one runner's rating towers above the rest and pairs with an actual win percentage in an otherwise winless field.
Hes No Yes Man (No. 6) is the easy top selection here — an 88.83 TrackWiz rating is a full 18 points clear of the next horse in this field, and he's the only entrant to bring a real win percentage to the table at 20%. Trainer Leonel Hernandez hands the reins to Francisco Calderon, and at 9/5 on the morning line the public is already on board. In a maiden field with this many blanks on the win ledger, that kind of proven performance edge is hard to dismiss.
Im Significant (No. 1) opens at 3/1 as the second choice and backs it up with a 70.76 rating — second-best in the field. Trainer Kash Reed taps Juan Pulido, and while she's also maiden, the rating gap between her and the rest of the non-contenders is real. She looks like a logical place finisher if the favorite does her job up front.
Genuine Hawkeye (No. 7) is a sneaky show play at 10/1 morning line odds. Her 65.62 rating is third in the field and trainer Joe Chapa uses the capable Victor Manuel Urieta, Jr. here. In a race where the top three by our model are well separated from the rest, Genuine Hawkeye makes solid sense as a show ticket in exotics.
Race 3
Maiden Claiming · 250 yd · Dirt
An all-maiden 250-yard dash where nobody has a win on their résumé, but our model finds a clear top two — and the gap between them and the rest of the field is significant enough to lean into the exacta.
What the Hawk Sashay (No. 1) posts the field's top TrackWiz rating at 85.62 and gets Francisco Calderon up for trainer Ricardo Aguirre. At 4/1 on the morning line, there's a touch of value here relative to the ratings edge she carries — that's the kind of overlay situation worth targeting. The 250-yard distance is a pure gate-to-wire sprint where a big gate jump can end the race before it begins, and our model likes her to deliver exactly that.
Miss Abril (No. 10) is right on the heels of the top pick with an 80.26 rating and comes in at 6/1 on the morning line. Trainer Brittany N. Tellez uses her son Froylan Tellez Ramirez — a family stable connection that often signals a horse is well-spotted and prepared. If What the Hawk Sashay gets a step on the field, Miss Abril looks the most capable of keeping pace for the place spot.
Royals Money H (No. 9) rates third in this field at 63.42 and opens at 9/2 — shorter than her rating might justify, but in a maiden sprint with this much uncertainty, proximity to the top two matters. Juan Rodriguez gets the call for trainer Juan Martin Triana, and she rounds out the logical show play for exacta/trifecta construction.
We're opening three races to all TrackWiz readers today. In Race 1, Poppin is our top pick at a juicy 8/1 morning line — that's a number we think the market is undervaluing, and our rating of 79.79 suggests there's real ability here worth a look. Race 2 brings us to Hes No Yes Man, who carries our highest free-race rating at 88.83 and is posted at 9/5 — that kind of number in a maiden claimer at 300 yards tells you our model sees a horse that should be hard to beat at a fair price. Round out your early card with What the Hawk Sashay in Race 3, a 4/1 shot on the morning line at 250 yards who rates out at 85.62 — solid enough to anchor a straight bet or work into a daily double.
On a fast, dry Lone Star surface like today's, early speed is king. All three free picks profile as horses that should be out of the gate quickly — in races this short, that's not just an advantage, it's practically the whole ballgame.
