Fort Erie is open for business on a gorgeous Tuesday afternoon — partly cloudy skies, 81°F, and a six-race card that covers everything from maiden claimers to allowance company. It's the kind of late-summer day where the turf course can be lightning-fast and the dirt tends to play fair, so conditions look favorable across the board.

A La Carte looks like the class of this six-furlong claiming opener, but trainer Nick Guy Mileni, Jr. saddles two horses here — including the morning-line favorite Commander Joe — which could scramble the pace picture and create some value.
A La Carte carries the top TrackWiz rating in the field at 88.54, a significant margin over the rest. Sitting at 2/1 on the morning line, the price is fair for the horse our analysis likes most. Trainer Nick Guy Mileni, Jr. has a strong stable presence throughout today's card, and Leo Salles aboard adds a capable pair of hands. With that rating edge, A La Carte deserves to anchor your win bets in Race 1.
Commander Joe opens at 9/5 — technically the morning-line favorite — and backs up an 79.57 TrackWiz rating. Interesting to note that Mileni runs both Commander Joe and A La Carte here; if the barn's main intent is with A La Carte, Commander Joe could still do enough to fill the exacta. Helen Marie Vanek has been busy on today's card and should keep this one close through six furlongs.
Kentucky Bill is the intriguing piece in the exotics at 3/1 on the morning line. A career win rate of 37% is easily the best in the field — that tells you this horse knows how to finish the job when things set up right. Kirk Johnson gets the call for trainer Daniel Wills, and at a solid 46.05 rating, there's enough here to land a check.
Race 2
Maiden Claiming · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
A maiden claiming sprint on the dirt with a full field of debut or lightly-raced runners — these races can be chaotic, but Silent Mort stands out head and shoulders in the ratings, making this a strong top pick despite the unpredictable nature of the maiden ranks.
Silent Mort tops the field with a 88.54 TrackWiz rating — tied for the highest mark on the entire day's card — and the 2/1 morning line reflects that dominance. Trainer Nick Guy Mileni, Jr. is clearly in form today, having already saddled a top pick in Race 1, and Helen Marie Vanek gets the mount. In maiden claiming company over 5½ furlongs of dirt, this kind of rating separation is hard to ignore.
Mulmur checks in at a 58.06 rating and 7/2 odds, making it the clear second choice in our analysis. Trained by Roy George Agostino and ridden by Michael David, the horse posted an average speed figure of 53 — in line with several rivals but backed by the stronger overall profile. In a wide-open maiden field, Mulmur looks like a solid place anchor for your exactas.
Bust the Trust draws attention at 5/2 on the morning line despite having no recorded average speed figure in our data — suggesting this may be a first-time starter or one with a very limited workout-based profile. Trainer Sharon Ceccato sends out a horse that the oddsmakers clearly respect, and Juan Crawford is a capable hand if the talent is there. At a 57.5 rating and morning-line second choice, Bust the Trust is worth threading into your trifecta.
Race 3
Maiden Special Weight · 7 fur · Turf
Seven furlongs on the turf in maiden special weight company produces a layered puzzle — Pelee Island leads the ratings but comes in at a relatively low average speed figure, while Ilikeitwhenitsnows emerges as a major price play at 10/1 despite a 74.19 rating that would challenge many favorites.
Pelee Island sits atop the TrackWiz ratings at 87.81 and opens at a reasonable 5/2 on the morning line. Jockey Da-Sean Zavier Gaskin has been active throughout today's card and links up with trainer Joan M. Mitchell for what shapes as a strong win opportunity. The one thing to monitor is the posted average speed figure of 51 — among the lower marks in the field — but on turf, class and overall profile often matter more than raw dirt-based figures, and Pelee Island's overall score says this horse is ready to run.
Ilikeitwhenitsnows at 10/1 is the marquee value play in Race 3. That 74.19 rating is second-best in the field and would be a top-two horse in most races today, yet the morning line has it dismissed at double digits — that's a legitimate overlay. Leo Salles, who is also aboard A La Carte in Race 1, takes the mount for trainer Doug Carter. If you're playing exotics, this is the horse to spread underneath.
Rose for Carrick rounds out the top three at 3/1 and a 69.62 TrackWiz rating — third-best on the sheet. Kirk Johnson, a familiar face throughout today's card, gets the assignment for trainer Julie Mathes. Seven furlongs on turf can suit closers and pace-sensitive runners, and Rose for Carrick's overall profile suggests enough ability to hit the board even if the top two run as expected.
The first three races set up an interesting opener to the card. On the dirt, A La Carte (Race 1) and Silent Mort (Race 2) both sit at 2/1 on the morning line and carry TrackWiz ratings north of 88 — that's a strong signal in shorter sprints where pace and class tend to sort things out quickly. Keep an eye on early speed in these races; six furlongs and five and a half furlongs on Fort Erie's compact dirt oval can reward horses who get clean trips out of the gate.
The wildcard in the free races is Pelee Island in Race 3 — a Maiden Special Weight going seven furlongs on the turf. MSW turf routes attract lightly raced types who can improve sharply, and at 5/2 on the morning line, Pelee Island represents the kind of overlay potential that makes turf maiden races worth your attention. The partly cloudy conditions and warm temps suggest the grass should be in great shape this afternoon.
