Finger Lakes Picks & Predictions — September 9, 2026
It's a gray, wet Wednesday at Finger Lakes — rain is falling and temperatures are sitting at a mild 75°F, which means the main track is going to be a factor all afternoon. Eight races are on the schedule, all on dirt, and if you've done your homework on horses that handle off-track conditions, today's card could be a profitable one.
Wet dirt at The Lakes tends to play toward horses with strong early foot — the slop rewards runners who can get position without burning energy, and closers often find themselves stuck in a soup they can't navigate. Two horses separate themselves from the field on TrackWiz ratings, but the morning line tells a different story — the top-rated runner is overlooked at 5/2 while a class-question horse sits as the public's third choice at 3/1.
Cryster tops our ratings at 85.99 and draws post 3 in this mile-and-70-yard allowance test on dirt. Trainer Paul W. Barrow sends him out with Jeremias Flores in the irons, a pairing worth noting. His 12% career win rate is respectable at the allowance level, and the 5/2 morning line may understate his edge given how cleanly he separates at the top of the TrackWiz model.
Reign It In rates a close second at 84.17 — just 1.82 points behind Cryster — which makes the 5/1 morning line look like real value for a horse capable of hitting the board. Trainer Chris J. Englehart is a familiar name at Finger Lakes, and Rohena gets the call in what shapes up as a stalker's race over this route. If Cryster falters, Reign It In is the likeliest beneficiary.
Palpable brings the field's best career win percentage at 25% and a solid 52.91 TrackWiz rating, making her a logical exotic anchor at 7/2. Trainer Melanie Giddings puts Shaun Bridgmohan up — a jockey who knows how to rate a horse in a route. She won't wow you on paper, but a 25% win rate suggests she gets the job done when conditions are right, and she's worth including in trifectas.

A wide-open maiden claimer on the dirt sprint where the morning-line favorite doesn't match the TrackWiz leader — setting up a potential overlay for sharp bettors willing to trust the numbers over the crowd.
Im Gunna leads all horses in TrackWiz's model with an 85.51 rating yet checks in at 7/2 on the morning line — an interesting disconnect in a maiden field where every horse is still looking for their first win. Reylu Gutierrez, one of the more capable riders in this circuit, gets the mount for trainer Troy Smith. None of these runners have won before, but Im Gunna's rating edge over the field is substantial enough to make her the clear top choice.
Runaway Roscoe rates second in the field at 77.24 despite being sent off at 6/1 on the morning line, offering a nice value angle for the place slot. Trainer Chris J. Englehart, who also saddles Reign It In in Race 1, clearly has horses coming into form today. Runaway Roscoe's average speed figure of 53 is right in the mix for this maiden group, and a pace scenario where Im Gunna goes to the front could set the table for this closer to pounce.
Boom Shocka Boom draws heavy action at 6/5 as the public's favorite, and trainer Wesley A. Ward's presence alone demands respect — Ward is one of the elite sprint trainers in North America, and his horses often show up fresh. The 59.67 TrackWiz rating and top average speed figure of 55 in the field back up the crowd's enthusiasm. Even at short odds, she's a sensible show ticket anchor and keeps you live in the trifecta.

Alpine Giant is the 7/5 morning-line favorite in this six-furlong claiming sprint, but Observer pops as a big-priced overlay at 6/1 with a nearly identical TrackWiz rating — the value case here is hard to ignore.
Observer sits atop our ratings at 82.71 while going off at 6/1 on the morning line — a significant overlay against the 7/5 chalk. Trainer John A. Grabowski puts Keiber J. Coa aboard, a strong jockey booking for a horse that carries a 14% career win rate in a field where most runners are in single digits. His average speed figure of 53 is competitive across the board, and if he gets a ground-saving trip from the 4-hole, there's a real chance he wires this field.
Alpine Giant rates just below Observer at 81.92 and owns the top average speed figure in the race at 55 — a genuine edge in a six-furlong dirt sprint where early pace matters. The 7/5 morning line suggests the crowd likes him most, and a 25% career win rate backs that up. He's the natural place horse here: plenty of ability, but the value play on top goes to Observer.
Valentine Gift brings a 73.02 rating and a solid average speed of 54, sitting just outside the top tier but well ahead of the rest of the field. At 3/1, trainer Timothy P. Murphy has her positioned in a manageable spot off the 8-post. She's the safest show option in the race — consistent enough to hit the board if the pace heats up between Observer and Alpine Giant, and a natural trifecta key from underneath.
The free portion of today's card gives you a nice cross-section of what Finger Lakes is serving up. Race 1 is an Allowance sprint going a mile and 70 yards, and Cryster (morning line 5/2, TrackWiz rating 85.99) is the one we've landed on. Allowance fields tend to carry more class than a standard claiming race, so the wet track will help separate horses that belong from ones that are just showing up. In Race 2, a Maiden Claiming sprint at 5½ furlongs, Im Gunna (7/2 ML, 85.51 rating) fits as a solid value play at that morning line — maiden claimers on off tracks can get chaotic, and horses with any hint of mud-running bloodlines jump up the list. Race 3 brings us a 6-furlong Claiming affair where Observer stands out as a live longshot at 6/1 with an 82.71 rating — this is the kind of price we love on a sloppy day when pace scenarios get scrambled.
The thread connecting all three free picks: none of them are heavy chalk, and in off-track conditions at a smaller oval like Finger Lakes, value tends to surface. Don't automatically fade a morning-line longshot like Observer just because the number looks big — wet tracks create parity, and parity creates overlays.
