Evangeline Picks & Predictions — October 22, 2026
It's a beautiful Thursday afternoon at Evangeline Downs — clear skies, 77°F, and a fast-playing dirt strip that should have these quarter horses flying from gate to wire. Seven races are on the board today, and the card leans heavily into the short-distance sprint game, with distances ranging from a blink-and-you'll-miss-it 220 yards all the way out to 550 yards in Race 2.
That kind of compact racing puts a massive premium on gate speed and early reaction time. On a clear, dry day like today, expect times to be sharp and pace scenarios to be unforgiving — there's simply no room to spot a rival three strides out of the gate and make it back in these sprints. Every pick on today's card was built with that in mind.
Three races are open for everyone — Races 1, 2, and 3 — and they give you a real taste of what's running today. The premium side of the card (Races 4 through 7) features some of the most interesting betting opportunities of the afternoon, including an allowance sprint and a maiden dash that our models flagged with elite ratings.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Claiming · 300 yd · Dirt
A wide-open maiden claiming sprint at 300 yards where TrackWiz ratings separate a clear top tier from the rest of the field — but maiden races always carry extra unpredictability.
Alekca Cj draws the #3 hole and tops our TrackWiz ratings at 85.62 — the highest mark in the field by a comfortable margin over One Famous Dlt. Trainer Preston Jourdan puts Ubaldo Luna in the irons, a combination worth watching in short-distance sprints. At 4/1 on the morning line, this is genuinely solid value for the top-rated horse. In a maiden field where no one has broken their maiden yet, the rating edge here is as clean as it gets.
One Famous Dlt comes in as the morning-line favorite at 2/1, and that market respect is backed by a TrackWiz rating of 74.77 — second best in the field. Rene Hernandez gets the call for trainer Barbara Alcantara, and at the short 300-yard distance, a quick break can be the whole ballgame. Even if Alekca Cj fires at the top, One Famous Dlt looks like a safe landing spot in the exacta.
Roll On In at 7/2 checks in with a rating of 62.48, third best on the card, and trainer Gilberto Gonzalez sends out Leonardo Palomo for this short dirt sprint. The morning line suggests the market sees something here too, making Roll On In a reasonable safety net for trifecta coverage without sacrificing too much overlay. In tight maiden sprints, thirds can come from the middle of the pack in a hurry.
Race 2
Claiming · 550 yd · Dirt
Hamlet On the Move stands head and shoulders above this claiming field on TrackWiz ratings, but Sheza Royal Fortune's eye-catching 33% career win rate and a couple of other experienced runners keep the exotics interesting.
Hamlet On the Move carries a TrackWiz rating of 87.81 — a full 23 points clear of the next competitor — and that kind of separation in a claiming field at 550 yards is hard to ignore. Trainer Mardonio Flores, Jr. has Juan Francisco Garcia, Jr. in the saddle, and the 5/2 morning line actually looks fair rather than short given the rating dominance. A 7% career win rate doesn't scream elite, but at this class level and over this longer quarter-horse distance, the overall profile points squarely to the top.
Ajs Maxin Out rates out at 64.83 for trainer Trey Ellis and jockey Bobby Ransom — a combination that knows how to win at this level. The 9/2 morning line offers a touch of value for a horse that profiles as the clear second-best on our figures, making it a natural place play in the exacta underneath Hamlet On the Move.
Cj Vodka Money Pop brings a 12% career win rate into this spot and rates at 59.60, slotting in as a legitimate third option in the exotics. Trainer Preston Jourdan and Ubaldo Luna are a familiar pairing at Evangeline, and the 6/1 morning line gives the trifecta some juice if they land on the board. Don't overthink the show slot here — the rating and connections are solid enough to warrant inclusion.
Race 3
Maiden · 220 yd · Dirt
This maiden sprint at 220 yards sets up as a two-horse show at the top, with Apollitical Latino carrying a commanding rating advantage and the morning-line crowd already pointing that way.
Apollitical Latino checks in at a race-best 89.12 on our TrackWiz scale and is the morning-line favorite at 8/5 — the market and our numbers are singing the same song. Trainer Adalberto Miranda sends out Ubaldo Luna, who is very active on this Evangeline card and clearly comfortable at the 220-yard distance. In a maiden event where the field has no prior wins to lean on, a dominant rating like this deserves to be respected at face value. The 8/5 price isn't a steal, but fading the class of the field in a maiden sprint is a tough sell.
Leesa Gone Rogue rates at 67.66 — a significant step below the top pick but a clear second on our figures — and trainer Dondrick London has Leonardo Palomo up from the rail. The 5/2 morning line reflects real market interest, and in a tight 220-yard burst where anything can happen in the first jump, being on the inside post with a capable rider is a meaningful edge. A solid place ticket underneath Apollitical Latino makes sense here.
Wild Tres of James at 6/1 rates at 55.99 and represents the third-best figure in an otherwise thin maiden field. Trainer Martin Trejo sends out Rolando Cabrera, and the mid-range morning line gives this one some room to offer trifecta value without burning your ticket if the top two run to form. In a short sprint with eight runners and no prior wins in the field, things can get messy fast — Wild Tres of James is a reasonable hedge.
The free portion of today's card opens with a trio of sprints that hit three different distances — 300 yards in Race 1, 550 yards in Race 2, and 220 yards in Race 3. That variety is actually useful for handicapping because it lets us see how the track is playing at multiple trip lengths before we dig into the deeper races. Our top-rated free pick is Apollitical Latino in Race 3, the lone maiden sprint at 220 yards, who carries an 89.12 TrackWiz rating and draws 8/5 on the morning line — short but arguably justified. In Race 2, Hamlet On the Move gets the nod in the 550-yard claimer with an 87.81 rating, which is the class of the early card at that trip. And in the opener, Alekca Cj at 4/1 in the maiden claiming 300 offers a touch of value if you're looking to build a small early multi.
Given the clear conditions and what figures to be a consistent, speed-favoring surface, all three free picks profile as horses who want to be on or near the lead from the jump. In quarter horse racing, that's not a bias — it's just physics. Back horses who can break clean today.
