Delta Downs Picks & Predictions — October 28, 2026

8 racesAll Delta Downs picks

We're heading to Vinton, Louisiana for an eight-race Wednesday card at Delta Downs, and the conditions are about as good as it gets down here in late October — partly cloudy skies and a comfortable 80°F. That kind of weather typically keeps the dirt surface consistent and fast, which rewards horses that can set or press a clean pace early.

The card is a mix of claiming races and a maiden special weight sprint that gives TrackWiz analysts a lot to dig into. There's also a lone allowance test in Race 7 that shapes up as the class anchor of the day. Eight races, multiple angles, and a few spots where the morning line looks beatable.

Three races are open to all readers today — Races 1, 2, and 3 — with our full premium breakdown covering the back half of the card where, frankly, some of the most interesting pace setups and value plays are hiding.

Best Bets

Race 1

Claiming · 5 fur · Dirt

A wide-open 11-horse sprint at 5 furlongs where the TrackWiz ratings separate two clear contenders from the pack — but at these morning-line odds, the favorite looks like a legit overlay candidate.

win7Purse ThiefML 2/1

Purse Thief (No. 7) tops our ratings at 88.54 in this field and draws the morning-line favoritism at 2/1 for a reason — the numbers back it up. With an average speed figure of 55, the best in the race alongside Ripple's Rocket, this one has the raw foot to control or press the pace in a short 5-furlong dash. Trainer Tanner Tracy and jockey Alex Birzer will want to get position early, and in a field this size, that gate speed could be decisive. The career win rate of 4% looks low, but TrackWiz ratings tell a more complete story — this horse is the class of the field right now.

place10Ripple's RocketML 5/1

Ripple's Rocket (No. 10) is the logical backup at 5/1 on the morning line, posting an 81.3 rating and matching Purse Thief's top average speed figure of 55. Trainer Sarah Martinez sends this one out in a competitive spot, and if the favorite gets into any trouble in a crowded 11-horse field, Ripple's Rocket has the speed to capitalize. At 5/1 on the board, there's solid place value here.

show2Hold My HatML 10/1

Hold My Hat (No. 2) is the intriguing show option at a juicy 10/1 morning line, sporting a 72.37 TrackWiz rating that's well above the mid-pack claimers in this field. Jockey Timothy Thornton, who also pilots Imperial Cruiser, gives trainer Carrol Castille a live mount here. At double-digit odds, tucking Hold My Hat into an exacta or trifecta underneath makes plenty of sense.

Race 2

Claiming · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt

Baron of the Nile looms as a class standout in this 6½-furlong dirt claimer, but Donegal Freedom will press hard early and could turn this into a pace duel that sets up the closers.

win2Baron of the NileML 7/2

Baron of the Nile (No. 2) is the standout on both ratings (86.35) and raw numbers — a 30% career win rate is elite at this level, and an average speed figure of 55 is tops in the field. Trainer Juan Munoz Cano keeps a live book going tonight, and jockey Elio J. Barrera gets a big-number horse at a fair 7/2 morning line. The distance of 6½ furlongs is a good spot for a horse with both speed and stamina, and if the pace heats up early, Baron of the Nile has the figures to run them down.

place3Donegal FreedomML 2/1

Donegal Freedom (No. 3) is the morning-line favorite at 2/1 and won't be caught flat-footed early — trainer Abel Ramirez-Rodriguez sends out a horse with a 21% career win rate and a 79.36 rating that makes this one the second-best on paper. The speed figure of 53 is a tick behind Baron of the Nile, so while we like the top pick to win, Donegal Freedom is a rock-solid place contender who should be involved throughout.

show5Julia's WarriorML 5/1

Julia's Warrior (No. 5) at 5/1 rounds out the show spot with a 77.61 rating and a 23% career win rate that gives trainer Juan A. Larrosa plenty of confidence. Matching Baron of the Nile's top speed figure of 55, this one has the raw pace to stay close and collect a minor check. Worth including underneath in trifecta plays.

Race 3

Maiden Special Weight · 5 fur · Dirt

A 12-horse maiden special weight sprint draws a wide variety of first-time starters and lightly raced youngsters — the TrackWiz model finds a strong morning-line favorite, but a pair of double-digit longshots have the figures to outrun their odds.

win9Forty Three CentsML 9/5

Forty Three Cents (No. 9) tops the maiden field with an 88.83 TrackWiz rating — the highest number on tonight's entire card — and the market agrees, installing this one at 9/5 on the morning line. Trainer Allen Landry puts Casey Fusilier in the irons, and with an average speed figure of 54 in a field where several horses have no published figures at all, this one has a clear edge in measurable form. In a maiden race where consistency is hard to find, Forty Three Cents is the horse to beat.

place5Apollo's FuryML 7/2

Apollo's Fury (No. 5) brings a 66.35 rating and an average speed of 54 to back the 7/2 morning line — trainer Jayde J. Gelner and jockey Harry Hernandez are a sharp combo for this spot. While not quite at the level of the top pick, this one should be forwardly placed in a 5-furlong dash and figures to be in the mix for exacta money at a price that still offers value.

show3Dr. DeanML 12/1

Dr. Dean (No. 3) is the sneaky show play at 12/1 — a 64.41 rating that ranks third in this field is easy to overlook at that price. Trainer Benard Chatters, who also runs Wildly Wicked tonight, clearly has horses ready, and an average speed of 52 in a wide-open maiden race is enough to land in the exotics. If you're playing trifectas in this one, Dr. Dean at double-digit odds is a great singling-out opportunity underneath.

The free portion of today's card kicks off with a pair of claiming sprints before we hit the maiden special weight in Race 3 — and all three share a common thread: horses that project to get a clean trip near the front of the pace should have an edge on a surface that figures to be quick and true. Purse Thief opens the day as our top-rated play at 88.54 and goes at a fair 2/1 morning line. In Race 3, Forty Three Cents tops our ratings at 88.83 — the highest TrackWiz rating among the three free picks — and projects as a legitimate favorite at 9/5 in a maiden field where that edge in our model can really matter. Baron of the Nile bridges the gap in Race 2, drawing interest at 7/2 in a 6½-furlong dirt affair where pace shape could separate the contenders.

The warm, dry day at Delta supports aggressive early fractions, so keep an eye on how quickly these early leaders hit the first call — if the pace is honest, closers get a look, but in sprint racing at this track, front-runners and pressers have historically held their own.
