National Forest is our best bet among today's free selections — the morning-line favorite at 4/5 in Race 1's maiden claiming sprint, ranking first in the field for recent race speed at 12.14 seconds per furlong. That kind of raw speed edge in a maiden claimer is exactly the type of angle TrackWiz analysis is built to surface.
It's a cool, cloudy November afternoon at Churchill Downs — 55°F with a standard dirt surface for the main track. The nine-race card mixes maiden claimers, maiden special weights, allowance company, and straight claimers across both dirt and turf, giving bettors plenty of angles to work with from first race to finale.
What makes today interesting is the blend of unproven runners in the early races and some legitimate class questions shaking out in the back half of the card. Pace scenarios are still developing across most races, which means positioning and jockey skill could loom large this afternoon.

Race 1
Maiden Claiming · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt
A maiden claiming opener on the dirt sprint where Brad Cox sends out two first-time starters that completely dominate the morning line — the top two rated horses in the field come from the same barn and account for nearly half the TrackWiz simulations combined.
National Forest is the clear class of this field with a TrackWiz rating of 60, the top mark here, and the morning line reflects that at 4/5. As a first-time starter there's no race record to lean on, but his workout line is the best in the field at 12.00 sec/furlong, and his speed figure from prior racing clocks in at 55 — the highest average in this maiden claimer. Tyler Gaffalione, who hits at 18% over the past year with a 54% in-the-money rate, gets the mount for a trainer in Brad Cox who carries an 'A' grade and regularly fires debut winners. National Forest won 31% of our 10,000 simulations — that kind of edge doesn't come along often in a maiden claimer.
Stablemate Frosty Jack is the other Cox trainee in here and ranks second in the TrackWiz ratings at 55, also going first time out. His workouts match National Forest's blistering 12.00 sec/furlong clip, ranking second in the field, and Florent Geroux — an 18% winner over the past year — takes the mount. Without race data it's hard to project exactly how he'll handle his debut, but the connections and work tab make him a logical exotics partner with the top pick.
Dark Sky has the second-best recent race speed figure in the field at 12.93 sec/furlong and a TrackWiz rating of 51.67, ranking third. The concern is that his workouts rank sixth in the field and he failed to place last out, but Yomar Ortiz Jr. is a strong B+ rider and Ron Moquett has had his moments. At 6/1 on the morning line he's a usable third horse in the exotics for a race that could get messy behind the Cox duo.

Race 1 is where the value conversation starts today. National Forest carries a 4/5 morning line and a 30.98% simulated win probability in our model — that's a horse the market and our numbers agree on, which isn't always the case. The jockey attached to this ride has posted an 18% win rate and hit the board in over half of starts over the past year, adding a layer of confidence in the connections. In a maiden claiming sprint at 6½ furlongs on dirt, raw speed often tells the story, and National Forest has that edge over the field.
Casual bettors should feel comfortable using Race 1 as an anchor for the afternoon. It's a straightforward play with legitimate backing from the numbers — no exotic gymnastics required. Win or exacta with the top two in the morning line is a clean, low-risk way to get the card started.
