Canterbury Park Picks & Predictions — May 24, 2026
Sunday afternoon at Canterbury Park is shaping up to be a beauty. Clear skies, 75 degrees, and a fast surface — conditions that reward horses who want to run and handicappers who know how to find them. Seven races are on the board today, mixing dirt sprints, a pair of turf routes, and a Maiden Special Weight that could surface a real prospect in Kalatua.
The card has a nice spread of conditions — you've got Claiming races early, a couple of Allowances in the middle stretch, and a Starter Optional Claiming turfside to close things out. In other words, there's something here for every type of bettor, whether you're hunting short-priced overlays or digging for a live longshot to anchor your exotics.
TrackWiz has full analysis on all seven races. The first three are on us — free, no login required. Races 4 through 7 are where the card gets deeper and, frankly, more interesting.
Best Bets
Race 1
Allowance Optional Claiming · 1 mi · Dirt
A Jose Silva Jr. double-entry headlining this mile dirt allowance optional claimer makes the top two horses to beat, but it's the stablemate battle within the battle that shapes the whole race.
Expressive Love (No. 4) carries the highest TrackWiz rating in the field at 88.54 and shares the barn of trainer Jose Silva Jr. with the morning-line favorite — that stable confidence speaks volumes. Her 33% career win rate is elite for this level, and she'll have sharp tactical rider Manuel Americano in the irons. At 2/1 on the morning line, she's not a screaming overlay, but the ratings edge over every rival here is decisive enough to make her our best bet.
Miwoman (No. 2) is our place play at a workable 5/2 morning line. Her 15% career win rate looks modest on paper, but trainer Bruce Riecken spots horses well, and her TrackWiz rating of 74.69 puts her solidly third in this field. At a mile on dirt, she profiles as a pace-to-place type who can stay honest and collect a check.
Guiltyofhavingfun (No. 5) is the other Silva half of the entry and brings a matching 33% career win rate to the table — she's clearly a winning-caliber horse. Her rating of 72.35 and average speed figure of 55 (best in the field) give her a sneaky speed edge. If the stablemate dynamic plays out awkwardly in the early going, she could easily end up third or better at a short price worth including in exotic tickets.
Race 2
Claiming · 7 1/2 fur · Turf
Shotgun Runner looks like a class standout on this 7.5-furlong turf claimer, but the Jose Silva Jr. barn throws in two live entries that could make life complicated in the stretch.
Shotgun Runner (No. 4) is the clear class horse here, posting a field-best TrackWiz rating of 88.54 with Eduardo Gallardo up — one of the sharper jockeys on the Canterbury circuit. His 16% career win rate is in line with the field, but the ratings gap between him and the rest is substantial. Trainer Coty W. Rosin clearly has this horse ready, and the 7.5-furlong turf distance suits a horse with that kind of peak figure.
Rowan August (No. 3) is the value angle at 5/1 on the morning line and our place pick. He's a Silva barn runner with a 16% career win rate — matching Shotgun Runner's — and a TrackWiz rating of 66.33 that puts him clearly second in the field. Manuel Americano is a dependable pilot, and at those odds, Rowan August is exactly the kind of horse who can sneak into the exacta.
Thirsty Vision (No. 2) rounds out our show ticket at 5/2, and while his 9% career win rate doesn't scream confidence, his TrackWiz rating of 54.22 and trainer Silva's knack for running multiple horses in the same race keeps him relevant. He figures to get a clean trip from the two post and could easily hold third in a pace scenario that suits closers.
Race 3
Claiming · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
Kind Kismet carries a massive ratings edge into this 5.5-furlong dirt claiming sprint, but the pace picture is loaded and the short field means no place to hide.
Kind Kismet (No. 5) is the standout here with a 87.08 TrackWiz rating — nearly 15 points clear of the next-best horse — and Eduardo Gallardo, who has been getting results all card long, takes the mount. Her 16% career win rate is respectable for claiming company, and trainer Joel Berndt sends out a horse that lines up well at this 5.5-furlong distance. At 3/1 on the morning line, she's a fair price for a horse who looks like the class of the field.
Wildcat Minny (No. 1) draws the rail and brings a solid 72.29 TrackWiz rating — second best in the field. Trainer Tim Padilla is a solid conditioner, and Alonso Quinonez knows how to pop from the inside post in a sprint. Her 10% career win rate won't turn heads, but at 7/2 she's a legitimate place threat with a stalker style that could capitalize if Kind Kismet faces early heat.
Lady K Westfall (No. 3) hasn't broken her maiden yet — career win rate is listed at zero — but her TrackWiz rating of 70.94 and average speed figure of 54 suggest she's been competitive. At 5/2 morning line with Luis Fuentes steering for trainer Ruben Fuentes, the connections know this filly well. She's the kind of hide-in-exotics option who can pick up a check in a short five-horse field.
Our three free races cover a solid cross-section of today's card. Expressive Love opens the day in an Allowance Optional Claiming mile on dirt — a top TrackWiz rating of 88.54 backs up the 2/1 morning line as fair but potentially beatable money depending on how the wagering develops. On the turf side, Shotgun Runner draws our eye in the 7½-furlong Claiming event in Race 2, where pace scenario and surface preference align nicely. And in Race 3, Kind Kismet at 3/1 in the 5½-furlong dirt sprint offers a little more cushion for value-minded bettors.
With a fast, dry surface all day, horses that can get to the front early — or press the pace without burning out — figure to have an edge. Keep that in mind as you handicap the free races and carry it forward through the card.
