Ajax Downs Picks & Predictions — October 7, 2026
It's a wet one at Ajax Downs today. Rain is falling and the temperature is sitting at 64°F, which means that dirt strip is going to play differently than a sunny afternoon — and if you're not accounting for that in your handicapping, you're already behind. Six races are on the card, all on dirt, and all at the short, sharp distances that make Quarter Horse racing at Ajax its own animal.
We're looking at a mix of Speed Index races, Maiden action, and a pair of Allowance spots that should produce some genuinely competitive finishes. The card opens quickly and closes quickly — these sprints are decided in the blink of an eye, so prep work matters more than ever. Fortunately, TrackWiz has done the heavy lifting for you.
Best Bets
Race 1
Speed Index Race · 220 yd · Dirt
One horse towers over this 220-yard opener on paper, but the morning line suggests the public will make it a two-horse race at the top.
Politically Intoit (#4) is the standout of this field by a wide margin, posting a TrackWiz rating of 88.54 — nearly 36 points clear of the next-best horse. That kind of separation in a five-horse sprint doesn't come along often, and a 33% career win rate backs it up with real results. Trainer James Bogar sends this one out at 2/1 on the morning line, which feels like fair value given the rating dominance. Jockey Ismael Eluid Mosqueira gets the call, and at 220 yards, there's almost no time to recover if you break poorly — so the high rating suggests this one fires sharp off the gate.
Flyin Lady (#3) is the morning-line favorite at 8/5, which tells you the oddsmakers respect her chances even if our analysis puts her behind Politically Intoit. A 15% career win rate and a TrackWiz rating of 52.74 make her a solid underneath piece — at ultra-short sprint distances, consistency pays off. Helen Marie Vanek in the irons is a good pairing for a horse that should fire competitively.
Stonecutter Form (#5) rounds out the suggested exotic play at 3/1 on the morning line. The TrackWiz rating of 47.65 puts this one solidly mid-pack, and an 11% career win rate is modest but respectable in short-format racing. At 3/1, there's enough value here to plug into a trifecta without breaking the bank — Max Badal gets a live mount.
Race 2
Maiden · 250 yd · Dirt
A wide-open maiden sprint at 250 yards with a field full of runners carrying zero career wins — the TrackWiz ratings will do the heavy lifting here.
Ariche (#5) owns the top TrackWiz rating in this maiden field at 77.62 — a meaningful edge over the second-best horse in the race. Every runner here is winless, so raw ratings and preparation become the primary separators, and Ariche comes out on top by that measure. Trainer Joe Tavares teams up with Jose Nabor Cruz, an active jockey at Ajax who knows how to fire a horse in a short sprint. At 8/5 on the morning line, this one will likely be a short favorite, but in a maiden sprint the confidence is justified.
Caraways Mr Magic (#2) is one of two Wayne Procter trainees in this race, and this one draws the better rating at 57.50 — good enough for second in the field. Cristian Benitez picks up the mount, and at 5/2 on the morning line there's a touch of value if you're looking to key the top of the exotics. In maiden sprints this short, pace out of the gate matters enormously, and the Procter barn clearly has this one ready.
Laruadecherryblossom (#3) sits just a hair below Caraways Mr Magic with a TrackWiz rating of 56.67, making this a genuine three-horse cluster at the top of the field below Ariche. At 3/1 morning line, Ramiro Sanchez Castillo gets aboard for trainer Bob Broadstock, giving this runner a capable pilot. For trifecta purposes, the rating clustering between #2 and #3 means either could land the third spot on any given day.
Race 3
Speed Index Race · 300 yd · Dirt
A 300-yard Speed Index race with a clear top-rated horse, but a pair of hard-hitting closers with serious win percentages could make this interesting late.
Favorite Interest (#2) leads the field on TrackWiz ratings at 87.81, and a 25% career win rate across all starts is a strong resume in a field like this. Trainer Jason Pascoe has two horses in this race — the kind of barn confidence that matters — and handing the reins to Cristian Benitez at 5/2 on the morning line signals this is the stable's primary hope. The rating gap between Favorite Interest and the rest of the field is substantial enough to make this our top selection without hesitation.
Drouillard (#6) checks in with a TrackWiz rating of 73.75 and draws Jose Nabor Cruz for trainer Joe Tavares — both familiar names at Ajax. The 3/1 morning line feels like a fair representation of the risk, and at 300 yards there's just enough distance for a sharp horse to assert itself on the way to the wire. This one slots in neatly as the primary underneath piece in exactas and trifectas.
Baby On Fire (#5) is the sleeper of this analysis — a 50% career win rate is the single most eye-catching number on the board today. That figure, combined with a solid TrackWiz rating of 72.50, suggests a horse that runs its best consistently. Trainer James Bogar and jockey Ismael Eluid Mosqueira have been a productive combo, and at 5/1 morning line, Baby On Fire represents real value in the show spot and as a trifecta inclusion.
Three races are fully unlocked for every reader today. Race 1 is a Speed Index race at 220 yards where Politically Intoit (morning line 2/1, TrackWiz rating 88.54) sits at the top of our model and looks well-suited to the conditions. Race 2 is a Maiden sprint at 250 yards — always a little unpredictable with inexperienced runners, but Ariche (8/5 ML, rating 77.62) earns the nod. And in Race 3, a 300-yard Speed Index affair, Favorite Interest (5/2 ML, rating 87.81) rounds out the free card with a solid profile for today's surface.
One thing to keep in mind across all three free races: rain-affected dirt at Ajax can compact the surface and shift the pace dynamic in short sprints. Horses that break clean and get into stride early tend to hold an edge. Our ratings factor in that kind of reactivity, so trust the numbers — but also trust your eyes in the gate.
