Free Woodbine Picks & Predictions for Today — October 9, 2026
Fall racing at Woodbine doesn't get much better than this. Clear skies, 65°F, and a firm surface set the table for a crisp 8-race Friday card that mixes dirt sprints, a pair of turf routes, and enough claiming intrigue to keep the handicapping puzzle interesting all afternoon.
The card runs the full gamut — from a quick 5-furlong opener to a mile-and-a-sixteenth closer — so pace scenarios shift dramatically race to race. With turf conditions expected to be in good shape after a dry stretch, keep an eye on the grass runners today. The footing should favor horses with tactical speed who can find a clean trip on the outside.
Three races are open to every TrackWiz reader today, and our ratings surface some genuine value angles in that trio alone. The other five go deeper, and that's where the real card-building opportunity lives.
3 Free Races Today at Woodbine
Race 1
Claiming · 5 fur · Dirt
A short five-furlong dirt sprint where the morning line favorite gets outrated by two rivals — the pace scenario figures to be contested early, setting up a potential closer's advantage.
Gretna Green tops our TrackWiz ratings at 84.9 despite going off at 9/2 on the morning line — that gap between public perception and our model is exactly where value lives. Trainer Devon Gittens saddles this one, and notably also has Just Follow Me in the same race, suggesting confidence in Gretna Green as the barn's top hope. With an 18% career win rate and competitive average speed figures, she profiles as the class of this claiming sprint. Jockey Skye Chernetz gets the call and will need to find a good spot early in a race that figures to have multiple speed horses.
Saucy Name rates second in our model at 80.28 and catches the field at a comfortable 3/1 morning line — fair value for a horse that figures prominently. The 14% career win rate is modest, but Christoff Douglas is a reliable partner and the rail post shouldn't be a major concern in a short sprint. As a place play, Saucy Name offers solid security if Gretna Green runs her rating.
Souper Sunday ships in as the 2/1 morning-line favorite but ranks third in our model at 69.18 — making the show slot the right spot for a horse that will likely attract heavy action. The best average speed figure in the field at 56 is a legitimate data point, and a 19% career win rate gives trainer Dominic J. Polsinelli's runner real credentials. At short odds to win, the show position is where the smart money on this one lives for exotic purposes.
Race 2
Maiden Optional Claiming · 6 fur · Turf
A maiden optional claiming event on the turf where every horse is still chasing that elusive first win — the TrackWiz rating gap between the top two and the rest of the field is significant enough that this might play out more straightforwardly than most maiden affairs.
Katherine's Cub is our top-rated runner in Race 2 with an 89.12 TrackWiz score — the highest mark in the field by a comfortable margin. Trainer Kevin Attard is one of the most respected conditioners at Woodbine and regularly produces debut or lightly-raced winners, and handing the reins to jockey Pietro Moran adds further confidence. The 8/5 morning line reflects public awareness of this horse's class, but our numbers back up every cent of that favoritism. On a six-furlong turf sprint, the average speed figure of 55 is right in the pocket.
Perfect Speed at 2/1 is the public's second choice and our model slots her in second as well with a 58.33 rating — a sensible alignment. Jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson is one of Woodbine's most experienced pilots and brings a steadying presence to a maiden with unknown quantities. A matching average speed figure of 55 keeps Perfect Speed in range of Katherine's Cub if the favorite doesn't fire on cue.
Lively Up rates third in our model at 55.83 and offers a touch of value at 7/2 on the morning line for the show spot. Trainer William Tharrenos has a solid book of business at Woodbine, and Jeffrey Ian Alderson in the irons is a capable hand for a horse looking to earn a first check. In a wide-open maiden field, Lively Up's average speed of 54 keeps her competitive enough to hit the board.
Race 3
Claiming · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt
Nine horses go postward in a six-and-a-half furlong dirt claiming race that features a clear TrackWiz standout — but with a 10/1 longshot sneaking into the show spot, value hunters have a real reason to dig deeper in the exotics.
Springer comes in as our top-rated horse in Race 3 at 85.62 and, crucially, the morning line only has him at 4/1 — that's reasonable value for the class of the field. Trainer Devon Gittens, who also saddles Lean Music Machine in this race, appears to have Springer as the primary threat based on the rating separation. Rico W. Walcott picks up the mount and brings strong local knowledge. A 12% career win rate understates Springer's profile given the model's confidence in the current form cycle.
Gran Spirited at 6/1 slots in as our place pick with a 64.3 rating — a horse that's being underestimated by the morning line. The 12% career win rate mirrors Springer's, but trainer Tedston Holder and jockey Jose Luis Campos form a workmanlike combination that often delivers in claiming company. At a price, Gran Spirited makes excellent sense in exacta and place wagers for those looking to add some profit margin.
Dontgobackonurword is our show selection at a generous 10/1 morning line and a 59.49 TrackWiz rating — good enough to hit the board in a nine-horse field at a price that makes him attractive in the exotics. Trainer William Tharrenos also has Moon Landing in this race, and while Moon Landing gets the lower rating, Dontgobackonurword's 18% career win rate is actually the more compelling historical number. Pietro Moran gets the call and handles the added distance of 6.5 furlongs comfortably.
Our three free races give you a solid foundation for the day. Gretna Green opens the card at 9/2 on the dirt sprint — not the chalk, but our model has her rated 84.9, which suggests she's being underestimated on the morning line. Katherine's Cub is the standout of the free selections: an 89.12 TrackWiz rating in a 6-furlong turf maiden optional claimer is the kind of number that gets our attention, and at 8/5 she's respected without being overbet. Springer rounds out the free trio in Race 3, a 6.5-furlong dirt claiming affair where the pace figures to be honest and a closeable track bias could play into his hands.
The connecting thread across these three? All are on surfaces expected to play fair today, and none are in spots that look like pace mismatches. Solid fundamentals across the board.
