Thistledown Picks & Predictions — October 7, 2026
It's a clean, crisp fall afternoon at Thistledown — 66°F, clear skies, and a fast dirt surface that should reward speed and setup some honest pace scenarios throughout the card. Eight races on the slate today, all on the dirt, ranging from short maiden sprints to allowance routes stretching out to 1 1/16 miles.
This card has some real teeth. You've got maiden fields sorting themselves out early, a pair of allowance routes mid-card that could produce some eye-catching figures, and a sprint closer in Race 8 with a legitimate contender drawing strong marks from our models. The conditions are about as good as you'll get this time of year in northeast Ohio — don't sleep on the late-card races with fresh horses taking advantage of the footing.
Three races are available free today, giving every reader a solid starting point. The full eight-race breakdown — with pace projections, exotic strategies, and our complete ratings — is available to TrackWiz subscribers.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Special Weight · 6 fur · Dirt
A wide-open maiden special weight at six furlongs where one horse stands head and shoulders above the rest on ratings — but with a field full of first-timers, anything can happen when the gate opens.
Silence Earthling is the clear standout here, carrying a TrackWiz rating of 87.08 — a full 32 points clear of the second-best horse in this field. Fernando Salazar Becerra gets the call in the irons, and the morning line of 3/1 actually looks like fair value given that ratings gap. The average speed figure of 53 is respectable for this level, and in a field where several rivals have no recorded speed figures at all, that prior form gives Silence Earthling a meaningful edge. Bet with some confidence, but remember — maiden races have a habit of humbling even the most logical picks.
Don't Doubt Me draws the seven hole with a TrackWiz rating of 55 and a 4/1 morning line, making him a legitimate place contender in a field where the middle of the pack is tightly bunched. Trainer Justin Radosevich keeps the horse competitive, and while there's no recorded speed figure to lean on, the rating puts him comfortably ahead of most of this field. Use him underneath in exactas and place bets.
Kentucky Rumble at 9/2 has a rating of 54.17, slotting neatly into that second tier behind Silence Earthling with a group of closely-matched rivals. Trainer Yoni R. Orantes sends him out with Mauro Cedillo up, and while speed figures are absent from his record, the solid rating suggests enough underlying ability to hit the board. A solid exotic inclusion if you're building trifecta tickets.
Race 2
Starter Optional Claiming · 1 mi · Dirt
A starter optional claiming mile with a genuine three-horse battle at the top — the favorite goes postward as the chalk but two live prices are lurking with the form to make this interesting.
Puff'smagicdragon sports the top TrackWiz rating in the field at 84.90 and comes in at a juicy 9/2 morning line — meaning the model sees more here than the odds-makers do. A 21% career win rate is solid, and trainer Jeffrey A. Radosevich has been active on the card today, suggesting a confident barn. Luis Raul Rivera takes the mount, and the average speed figure of 52 is right in line with the competitive pace likely to set up over a one-mile dirt strip. Don't let the morning line fool you — this one is the value play of the race.
Oliverio is the speed horse here with a 26% career win rate — the best in the field — and a TrackWiz rating of 81.33 that backs up his record. Fernando Salazar Becerra, one of the busier jockeys on today's card, takes over from a barn that clearly has this horse pointed right. The 3/1 morning line is fair but may drift given Runwithheart's buzz.
Runwithheart is the morning line favorite at even money, and a 36% career win rate is legitimately eye-catching — that's the best winning percentage in this field by a wide margin. The TrackWiz rating of 78.49 actually slots her third behind our top two picks, which is why she's better framed as a show play and exacta wheel rather than a prime win pick. Trainer Caryn Vecchio also has Patriarchal in this race, so the barn clearly likes this spot.
Race 3
Maiden Special Weight · 6 fur · Dirt
Another maiden sprint at six furlongs, and this one has a legitimate morning line favorite with a ratings edge — but three horses are clustered tightly enough that pace could decide the outcome.
Kiss From Mom tops the TrackWiz ratings in this field at 59.00 and is deservedly installed as the 8/5 morning line choice. Luis Alberto Batista takes the mount for trainer Jason DaCosta, and an average speed figure of 53 matches up well against this field. In a maiden race where several competitors show no speed figure at all, that real-world performance number is a meaningful separator — this is a confident top pick.
Whiskey River Run at 3/1 holds a TrackWiz rating of 56.67 with Jose A. Bracho in the irons for trainer Susan L. Anderson. No speed figure on record, but the rating is strong enough to suggest there's ability here that hasn't been fully exposed yet. At that price, he's a natural place bet and a smart exacta partner with Kiss From Mom.
Slingshot has a recorded average speed figure of 53 — matching the top pick — and a rating of 55.83, making him the third-best rated horse in the field. Trainer Justin Radosevich puts Victor R. Fernandez up, and the 7/2 morning line reflects legitimate respect from the line-makers. He's the natural show play and could easily reverse the order with Kiss From Mom if the pace sets up perfectly.
Our three free best bets today span a nice cross-section of the card. Silence Earthling opens things up in Race 1, a 6-furlong maiden special weight where our 87.08 rating makes this one a confident top selection at a fair 3/1 morning line. Race 2 shifts to a one-mile Starter Optional Claiming with Puff'smagicdragon (84.9 rating, 9/2 ML) — the added distance and class dynamics here make this one worth a close look. Then Kiss From Mom closes out the free card in Race 3, another 6-furlong maiden sprint where the 8/5 morning line reflects what the market already sees in her.
With all three free picks running on a fast, consistent surface under ideal weather, the pace scenarios should be relatively straightforward — no sloppy track to bail out closers, no wind or heat to flatten out early fractions. That tends to favor horses with legitimate early speed or strong late-kick patterns, and all three of our free selections show profiles that fit today's conditions well.
