Saratoga Picks & Predictions — August 1, 2026
The Spa is open for business on a cool, cloudy Saturday — 78°F with no rain in the forecast, which means the dirt should be playing fair and the turf course figures to be in excellent shape for what is a genuinely packed 12-race card at Saratoga.
There's a little bit of everything today: four maiden specials to kick things off, a pair of allowance turf sprints sandwiching a route, and — the headliners — three stakes races, including what looks like a fascinating clash in Race 10 going 1 1/8 miles on the dirt. This is the kind of card that rewards sharp handicapping from the jump, not just cherry-picking the late double.
TrackWiz has you covered on all 12 races. The first three are on us — free, full analysis, no login required. Races 4 through 12 are in the premium zone, where the real value hunting happens.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Special Weight · 1 1/16 mi · Turf
A deep maiden turf mile-plus with two live first-timers from blue-chip barns anchoring the top of the market, but it's Casse's runner that TrackWiz ratings favor by a nose.
Voyager tops our TrackWiz ratings at 59.0 and draws the coveted partnership of trainer Mark Casse and Irad Ortiz Jr., one of the sharpest jockey-trainer combos on the grounds. At 8/5 on the morning line, the market agrees — and the 1 1/16-mile turf distance suits a horse who figures to be forwardly placed early. Voyager carries an average speed figure of 55, which gives him a slight edge in raw numbers over most of this maiden field.
Correlation Trade is the lone Chad Brown/Flavien Prat first-timer in this spot, and that combination is worth circling at 2/1 all day long on the Saratoga turf. Brown debuts horses to win — he routinely leads the meet in turf maiden victories — and Prat's feel on a green turf router is second to none. A TrackWiz rating of 58.33 puts this one right behind our top pick, making her an excellent exacta anchor.
Joy of Life represents the second string for the powerful Mott barn, but at 5/2 she's priced with plenty of respect. Her TrackWiz rating of 57.5 clusters tightly with the top two, and Mott rarely sends an unprepared first-starter into a Saratoga maiden special weight. She makes sense underneath in trifectas as a horse likely to close into a pace that could get honest early.
Race 2
Maiden Special Weight · 6 fur · Dirt
First-time starters dominate this six-furlong dirt maiden, creating a wide-open speed scenario where jockey and trainer pedigree could be the deciding edge.
Velora lands Jose Ortiz and posts the field's top TrackWiz rating at 55.83, which is a meaningful gap over the next tier in this maiden sprint. Linda Rice has a solid record with debut runners at Saratoga, and Ortiz's instincts out of the gate are a genuine asset over six furlongs where early positioning is critical. At 7/2 on the morning line, this figures as the correct favorite.
Cyber Baby gets Flavien Prat — never a throwaway name in a maiden — and Miguel Clement has quietly developed a strong summer meet at the Spa. Her TrackWiz rating of 54.17 puts her solidly in the second tier, and in a race full of unknowns, the jockey advantage is real. Play her underneath for place and use her in exactas with Velora on top.
Lot of Loon draws Irad Ortiz Jr. for the Brad Cox barn, and that combination alone earns a spot in your exotics. Cox ships horses ready, and with Irad in the irons on a six-furlong dirt sprint, you're getting live coverage at 5/1. A TrackWiz rating of 53.33 is respectable in this maiden field, and if the top two get into a speed duel, a fresh closer-type could land right in front of this one's path.
Race 3
Claiming · 1 mi · Dirt
This one-mile dirt claimer has two clear standouts at the top of the TrackWiz ratings — and they're priced in a way that makes the exacta combination genuinely appealing.
Reasoned Analysis leads all comers with a TrackWiz rating of 85.81 and a career win rate of 37% — that's elite production in a claiming environment. Chad Brown sends him out with Dylan Davis, and Brown's win percentage at Saratoga in dirt routes is consistently strong. At 2/1 on the morning line, this is a square favorite that's hard to argue with, even for value hunters.
Eliminate scores a 84.17 on our TrackWiz model — just a hair below the top pick — and Kendrick Carmouche has the horse ready for Linda Rice, who is very dangerous in this claiming class at Saratoga. A career win rate of 21% is solid for the claiming ranks, and at 5/1, there's real value in pairing this one with the favorite in exactas. Don't let the morning line fool you — this is effectively a two-horse race at the top.
Gewurztraminer rates third at 78.12 with a 30% career win rate — the second-highest in the field — giving Irad Ortiz Jr. plenty to work with from the rail. At 4/1, there's some value here, and Irad knows how to pilot a front-runner or stalker in a one-mile dirt route at Saratoga. He's the logical inclusion to round out your trifecta tickets.
Our three free races today span both surfaces and give you a solid read on how the track is playing early. Maiden Special Weight openers on turf (Race 1) and dirt (Race 2) let us clock early pace and watch for any bias developing — pay attention to whether pace-pressers or stalkers are getting rewarded, because that'll matter in spades when the stakes horses load up later. Voyager (8/5 morning line) draws our eye in Race 1, while Velora (7/2) is our top dart in the six-furlong dirt opener in Race 2.
Race 3 is the most handicappable of the free trio — a one-mile claiming event where Reasoned Analysis sits at 2/1 on the morning line and carries our highest TrackWiz rating of the free races at 85.81. Class and figure horses tend to dominate on cloudy, neutral-conditions days at Saratoga when the track isn't playing a pronounced speed or closers' bias, and Reasoned Analysis fits that profile. Don't skip Race 3.
