Santa Anita Picks & Predictions — October 4, 2026

10 racesAll Santa Anita picks

It's a scorcher at Santa Anita today — 99°F under clear skies with no marine layer in sight. That kind of heat can take a toll late in a race, so stamina and pace scenario are going to matter even more than usual this afternoon. Keep an eye on how the turf courses are playing as the day progresses; firm, sun-baked grass tends to favor horses with early tactical speed who don't have to grind it out in the stretch.

We've got a full 10-race card to dig into, mixing Stakes-level talent with Claiming and Maiden action across both dirt and turf. The card is heavy on mile routes — six of the ten races go the one-turn mile — so pace shape and position flexibility are recurring themes today. There's something for every type of bettor here, from a couple of straightforward spots to some exotic-friendly races where the prices could get interesting.

Best Bets

Race 1

Allowance Optional Claiming · 1 mi · Turf

A clear TrackWiz rating hierarchy sets up Race 1 on the turf mile, but the morning line favorite comes in at 8/5 against a field that includes a couple of intriguing overlays worth watching.

win6Known IdeaML 8/5

Known Idea tops our TrackWiz ratings at 89.12 — a full six points clear of the next horse — and backs it up with a 26% career win rate that ranks best in this field. Juan J. Hernandez gets the call, and at 8/5 on the morning line the market agrees this is the one to beat. The allowance optional claiming conditions suit a horse with this kind of consistent record, and a one-mile turf trip should play right into its wheelhouse. Lean in confidently, but don't expect big overlay value.

place4Prince DolceML 5/1

Prince Dolce (4) carries a 25% career win rate — matching the top tier of this field — and a TrackWiz rating of 83.19 that puts it solidly in the second tier. Ricardo Gonzalez pilots for trainer Steve R. Knapp, and at 5/1 on the morning line there's genuine place value here. If the pace sets up favorably, Prince Dolce looks like a logical price horse to fill out exactas.

show3Lyle The CrocodileML 3/1

Lyle The Crocodile (3) rates out at 77.30 — third-best in the field — and lands the services of Joel Rosario, one of the more accomplished riders on the card today. Trainer Philip D'Amato is a turf specialist at Santa Anita, which adds process-based confidence. At 3/1 the show price won't be generous, but Lyle The Crocodile is a logical exotic anchor in trifectas.

Race 2

Claiming · 1 mi · Dirt

A dirt mile claiming race where the morning line chalk (Springline at 4/5) and our top-rated horse (Good Golly Dolly at 9/5) create a fascinating 1-2 dynamic — the favorite doesn't top the TrackWiz board, which is worth noting.

win4Good Golly DollyML 9/5

Good Golly Dolly (4) leads the TrackWiz ratings at 88.83 despite being second on the morning line at 9/5 — that disconnect from the favorite position is encouraging from a value standpoint. Joel Rosario, one of the best in the business, picks up the mount for trainer Steve R. Knapp, a combo that should inspire confidence. The 12% career win rate looks modest, but the rating separation here is meaningful, and on dirt at a mile this horse profiles as the one most likely to keep running late.

place3SpringlineML 4/5

Springline (3) holds the favorite's mantle at 4/5 and isn't without merit — an 80.57 TrackWiz rating and the best average speed figure in the field (54) give it real form. Armando Ayuso rides for trainer Ryan Hanson, and a 13% career win rate is serviceable in a claiming spot. If Springline gets a clean trip and the pace doesn't collapse the field, the place looks almost automatic.

show1Sugar ReignML 3/1

Sugar Reign (1) rates 76.37 — third-best in the field — and deserves a spot in your exotics at 3/1 on the morning line. A 12% career win rate in a claiming field suggests consistent competitiveness without quite breaking through, which is exactly the profile you want from a show horse. Kyle Frey gets the mount and inside post position could help if the pace sets up favorably on the rail.

Race 3

Claiming · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt

A five-and-a-half furlong claiming sprint that looks wide open on paper — the morning line favorite (Separator at 9/5) doesn't match up with our top two rated horses, setting up a potential upset scenario.

win1ZadraML 9/2

Zadra (1) tops the TrackWiz board at 84.90 and brings a 20% career win rate into what shapes up as a contested sprint pace. Epifanio Garcia has the call from the rail, and at 9/2 on the morning line this is a genuine overlay against a field where the crowd is leaning on a horse rated well below it. The 55 average speed figure is competitive with the field, and Zadra's overall rating suggests the form is there to run a big race fresh.

place4Celestial SkiesML 5/1

Celestial Skies (4) rates second-best in the field at 82.67 and actually posts the highest average speed figure in the race (56) — suggesting this horse may have more raw ability than its morning line of 5/1 indicates. Trainer Gloria Haley sends out Alfredo L. Bautista, and for exotic players, a second-place finish here would make for a very tasty exacta payoff. The zero career win percentage could signal inexperience, but the speed data says don't dismiss it.

show3Surfin the CoastML 7/2

Surfin the Coast (3) has the most impressive raw career win rate in this field at 33%, which tells you this horse knows how to compete and close the deal. Kyle Frey rides for Jeff Mullins, a trainer who consistently puts horses in position to run. At 7/2 the show price won't break the bank, but tossing Surfin the Coast in the trifecta is easy given its winning record.

Our first three free races set the tone nicely. Known Idea opens the card in an Allowance Optional Claiming mile on the turf at 8/5 on the morning line — that TrackWiz rating of 89.12 is the highest mark of the entire card, which says a lot about how we feel heading into Race 1. On the dirt side, Good Golly Dolly (Race 2, 9/5 ML) and Zadra (Race 3, 9/2 ML) give us two chances to attack the Claiming ranks. Zadra is the one to watch for value — at 9/2, a TrackWiz rating of 84.9 suggests the market may be underestimating this horse in a 5½-furlong sprint where a clean break could be all she needs.

With the heat baking the track all day, early pace advantage on dirt could be premium — horses that can get a soft lead in this weather without overexerting in the first quarter are going to be tough to run down. That pace angle threads through all three free picks, and it's worth keeping in mind as you build your tickets.
