Free Penn National Picks & Predictions for Today — October 8, 2026
Happy Thursday from Penn National, where a crisp autumn afternoon — clear skies, 66°F, and what should be a firm, fast dirt surface — sets the stage for a compact but intriguing 7-race card. Conditions like this tend to favor horses that can get out cleanly and control their own pace, so keep that in mind as you dig into today's fields.
The card is a mixed bag of conditions: a Starter Allowance gets things rolling, we've got a pair of Claiming races in the early-middle portion, and an Allowance Optional Claiming in Race 5 that figures to draw some of the more talented horses on the grounds. There's no shortage of angles to attack today, whether you're playing for singles or building exotics.
TrackWiz has full analysis on all 7 races. The first three are on us — free to every reader — and Races 4 through 7 are available to subscribers. Let's get into it.
3 Free Races Today at Penn National
Race 1
Starter Allowance · 6 fur · Dirt
A wide-open starter allowance with two horses clustered near the top of the TrackWiz ratings and a morning line that undersells at least one of them — value hunters should pay close attention here.
Lastchance Romance (3) is the clear TrackWiz rating leader at 79.79 in this field, and that number jumps out in a race where most competitors are scattered in the 30s and 50s. Her 27% career win rate is one of the better marks in the field, and she gets Inoel Beato up, a reliable hand around Penn National. At 8/1 on the morning line, this is a legitimate overlay — the market hasn't caught up to what our model sees.
Itty Biddy City (8) rates nearly as high as the top pick at 78.37, making her a natural fit in the exacta underneath. The 5/1 morning line is fair but not generous, and Yabriel O. Ramos gives her a competent pilot who knows this track. If the pace sets up kindly, she has the raw numbers to sweep right past the field.
Neolithica (9) brings a 37% career win rate — the second-highest in the field behind Sassafrassness — and a TrackWiz rating of 65.53 that puts her solidly in the top half of this group. Trainer Bruce M. Kravets also saddles Braquet in this race, showing confidence in his barn's participation, and Neolithica looks the stronger of his two entries. At 8/1, she's worth a piece in trifecta coverage.
Race 2
Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
Two horses dominate the TrackWiz ratings in this six-furlong claimer, creating a logical top pair — but the morning line suggests the public might lean the wrong direction between them.
Diamond Essence (4) tops the TrackWiz ratings at 87.08 — a full four points clear of second-best Bonita Lassie — and Ricardo Chiappe, one of the sharper riders on this circuit, gets the call. Her 8% career win rate looks modest, but that number can reflect a tough conditions history, and the model's rating says she belongs at the top of this field. At 3/1, she's priced like the second choice but rates like the top pick.
Bonita Lassie (5) checks in right behind the top pick at 83.37 and is listed as the morning line favorite at 2/1, which means the crowd is leaning her way even if our model gives Diamond Essence the edge. Her 17% career win rate is the best in the field among horses with a realistic shot, and trainer Bruce M. Kravets keeps her sharp. She's a logical place anchor who should hit the board at a minimum.
Style to Follow (3) sits third in the ratings at 47.54 — a noticeable step below the top two — but her 14% career win rate and David Cora's familiarity with Kravets-trained runners makes her a usable show ticket. In a race where the top pair looks dominant, Style to Follow makes sense as inexpensive trifecta insurance at 6/1.
Race 3
Maiden Special Weight · 6 fur · Dirt
A maiden special weight on the dirt where no horse has broken their maiden yet, but the TrackWiz ratings show one runner with a commanding edge — this could be a single-horse race if the morning line favorite delivers.
Haunting Echoes (2) carries the highest TrackWiz rating in the race at 88.54 — more than 20 points clear of Ancient in third — and is the 2/1 morning line choice for good reason. Andrew Wolfsont gets the mount, and in a field where no one has won before, having the clearest edge in the ratings matters enormously. Maiden races are unpredictable by nature, but Haunting Echoes has the numbers to separate herself.
Ancient (6) is the second-highest rated runner at 68.02 and draws a respectable 9/2 morning line under Francisco Martinez. In maiden races, the second-best horse by ratings often collects the place check when the favorite does her job, and Ancient's profile fits that role neatly here. She's worth including underneath in exactas.
Explosive Run (3) posts the best average speed figure in the field at 56 — tied at the top — and Vladimir Diaz takes the mount for trainer Todd M. Beattie. While her TrackWiz rating of 55.00 is mid-pack, the raw speed number hints she could outrun her odds on the right pace scenario. At 4/1, she rounds out a logical show ticket.
The opening trio gives us plenty to work with. Race 1's Starter Allowance conditions tend to attract horses who've earned their eligibility the hard way, and Lastchance Romance at 8/1 on the morning line is the kind of overlaid price our ratings love — an 79.79 TrackWiz rating in a field where the favorite may not deserve all that chalk. Race 2 brings a straight Claiming sprint and Diamond Essence (87.08 rating, 3/1 ML) looks like the most reliable play of the free races, a horse whose figures fit the class level cleanly. Then Race 3, the Maiden Special Weight, is where the casual fan and the serious grinder should both pay attention: Haunting Echoes tops our model at 88.54 and opens at just 2/1 — the highest-rated free pick on the card and a horse worth building multi-race tickets around.
With all three free races going 6 furlongs on dirt under ideal weather, pace scenario is everything. Fast, clear days at Penn National historically reward horses that can secure a comfortable stalking spot — not necessarily the pure front-runners, but horses that can settle a length or two off the pace and pounce. Keep that pace dynamic in mind when you look at the full fields.
