Penn National Picks & Predictions — October 7, 2026
Clear skies, 66°F, and fast Dirt — Penn National is dialed in for a crisp Wednesday card, and the conditions couldn't be more straightforward for speed horses. When the weather cooperates like this, pace scenarios tend to play out close to script, which makes handicapping a little more honest and a lot more fun.
Seven races are on the slate today, stretching from a 5-furlong maiden opener all the way through a run of 6-furlong dirt sprints that dominate the back half of the card. It's a blue-collar afternoon at PENN — claiming company, allowance spots, and a couple of maiden races — but there's genuine value to be found if you know where to look.
Three races are fully open to all TrackWiz readers today, and our analysis flagged some interesting angles right out of the gate. The premium card goes deeper on the four races where the real money is — including a longshot worth serious attention in the claiming ranks.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Special Weight · 5 fur · Dirt
A maiden sprint where every horse is still looking for that elusive first win — our ratings separate a tight top three from the rest of the field.
Laflordelacanela draws the morning-line favoritism at 2/1 for a reason — our TrackWiz rating of 58.33 leads this field of first-time winners. Trainer Timothy C. Kreiser puts Angel Cruz in the irons, a combination worth noting in a short field like this. The 5-furlong sprint suits a horse that should break cleanly and control her own destiny up front. In a race where everyone is maiden, the edge goes to the one who grades out on top.
Victors Girl (5/2) comes in with the field's best average speed figure at 55, which matters in a 5-furlong dirt sprint where early foot is everything. Trainer Chelsea Sims Rabadan has her in a manageable spot, and Inoel Beato is a capable handler for a horse still learning. If Laflordelacanela gets shuffled or doesn't fire, Victors Girl has the raw speed to make her presence felt.
Port Elizabeth at 3/1 is the third-highest rated horse in the field with a TrackWiz score of 56.67, which makes her an honest exotics inclusion. Trainer T. Bernard Houghton knows how to spot a maiden, and David Cora gives her a professional hand. She grades as a solid safety net for trifecta and exacta construction.
Race 2
Allowance · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
The morning-line favorite doesn't match up with our top-rated horses in this allowance sprint — there's a real overlay opportunity if our analysis plays out.
Our Golden Gator is the standout here, posting a field-best TrackWiz rating of 82.65 while going off at 3/1 — not a screaming overlay but solid value given how clearly she grades above the chalk. She's won 20% of her career starts and has shown she belongs at this level under Angel R. Rodriguez for trainer Brandon L. Kulp. The 5.5-furlong distance on dirt is a straightforward ask, and her overall profile suggests she's been pointed at a spot like this one.
Tiz Ziffy is the one that really jumps out — a 33% career win rate is elite by any measure, and her TrackWiz score of 78.56 puts her solidly in the mix. Trainer Kathleen A. Demasi has her set up at 9/2 on the morning line, which is a price worth playing to the board. Silvestre Gonzalez gets the call and has the tools to put her in position to collect.
Rozzyroo at 10/1 is the longshot angle here — her TrackWiz rating of 76.88 is the third-best in the field, nearly matching Tiz Ziffy, yet she's going off at a massive morning-line price. For trainer Bruce M. Kravets and jockey Yabriel O. Ramos, this represents a live price in an exotics race. She's one of three horses tied at an avg speed figure of 54, so she won't be outrun early.
Race 3
Allowance Optional Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
Follow the Fellow looks like a class standout in this allowance optional claimer, with a 40% career win rate that towers over the competition.
Follow the Fellow is the best bet of the early card. A 40% career win rate is exceptional — that's not a horse that wins by accident, that's a legit overachiever. Trainer Chuck Spina puts Chantal Sutherland up, a proven combination when this horse is pointed for a spot. The TrackWiz rating of 86.35 leads all six runners by a healthy margin, and at 7/2 on the morning line, you're getting a fair price on what appears to be the most accomplished horse in the field over 6 furlongs of Penn dirt.
Mister Me profiles as the strongest alternative with a rating of 72.43 and a 25% career win rate — the kind of consistent performer who finds his way into the money even when not at his best. David Cora for trainer T. Bernard Houghton is a barn that shows up ready, and the 6-furlong distance fits his profile. If Follow the Fellow gets a contested pace, Mister Me has the tactical speed to capitalize.
Bejuco is an intriguing show piece at 6/1 — the TrackWiz rating of 63.19 actually leads the bottom half of the field, and trainer Erin Carpio has this horse entered in an optional claimer, meaning connections believe there's ability here worth protecting. The career win rate of 3% raises questions, but the rating says the raw ability may not have fully translated yet. Inoel Beato can extract a placing effort.
Our three free previews today cover Races 1 through 3, and they paint a pretty clear picture of the early tone. Laflordelacanela opens the day in a 5-furlong maiden sprint — a morning-line favorite at 2/1 with a TrackWiz rating of 58.33, which is modest but fits the light competition in a first-level maiden field. Race 2 steps up the quality significantly: Our Golden Gator comes in at 3/1 on the morning line with a much stronger 82.65 rating in an Allowance sprint, the kind of number that commands respect in this company.
The jewel of the free card is Race 3, where Follow the Fellow tops our board at 7/2 with an 86.35 rating in an Allowance Optional Claiming route at 6 furlongs. On a clear, fast track like we have today, a horse with that rating at that price is exactly the spot TrackWiz analysis targets. Don't sleep on the middle of this card — it may be the best value of the afternoon.
