Lethbridge RMTC Picks & Predictions — October 3, 2026
It's a crisp fall afternoon at Lethbridge RMTC — partly cloudy skies and 59°F temperatures set the stage for a clean, fast dirt track and seven races worth digging into. October racing in Alberta has a certain no-nonsense quality to it, and today's card delivers exactly that: a tight mix of allowance conditions and claiming battles spread across sprint distances, mostly in the 5½-to-7-furlong range.
Three of those races are fully open to all TrackWiz readers, and our analysis on those alone gives you a solid foundation for the afternoon. The full card, though, is where things get really interesting — particularly in the back half, where the pace shapes get complicated and the value windows open up.
Best Bets
Race 1
Allowance · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
The morning line favorite isn't the top-rated horse in this 5½-furlong allowance opener — Thunder Gold carries the highest TrackWiz rating in the field and could upset the odds board at a juicy price.
Thunder Gold tops our ratings at 88.54 despite going off at 2/1 on the morning line, making this one of the better overlays on the card. Trainer Charles Butch McDonald sends this one out with a legitimate shot against a field where the two horses rated below it are separated by meaningful margins. At 5½ furlongs on dirt, pace scenarios tend to favor horses with tactical speed and class, and Thunder Gold profiles as the class horse here by the numbers. At morning line odds of 2/1, this is a win bet that doesn't require you to take a bad price.
Speed It Up is the public's choice at 4/5 and carries a 30% career win rate — that's a legitimate closer profile that tends to find the board consistently. With a TrackWiz rating of 81.23 and jockey Gilberto Santos in the irons, this one should be right there at the finish even if Thunder Gold gets the jump early. At short odds, the place pool is the smarter play here.
Coal Boy at 9/5 on the morning line is interesting because it actually posts the best average speed figure in the field among horses with recorded figures, checking in at 53. Trainer Darcy W. Smith saddles this one with a 28% career win rate, which adds stable confidence. As a show play in exotics, Coal Boy gives you solid coverage and a horse that has demonstrated the ability to produce real speed numbers.
Race 2
Maiden · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
Maiden chaos at 5½ furlongs — nearly the entire field is winless and speed-figureless, but two horses at the top of our ratings are closely separated and set up a compelling exacta battle.
Properly Proper is our top pick at 5/2 on the morning line, carrying a TrackWiz rating of 87.81 — the highest in the field. In a maiden race where most runners have no recorded average speed figure, the horses with legitimate ratings stand out sharply, and Properly Proper leads that group. Trainer Lyle W. Magnuson and jockey Garfield Gordon form a combo worth watching, and at 5/2, this is fair value for the top-rated horse in a wide-open opener. Maiden races are inherently unpredictable, but the numbers point here.
What a Joke is separated from our top pick by just 0.42 rating points — essentially a coin flip at the top — but goes off as the morning line favorite at 7/5. Trainer Clifton G. Dennis also saddles Native Striker in this race, which tells you he's active and confident in his horses today. The place position here reflects the razor-thin margin between the top two, and What a Joke should be part of every exotic combination in this race.
Biz Appeal at 2/1 is the third-highest rated horse in the field at 65.28 — a meaningful step below the top two but well clear of the rest of the field. Jose O. Rocha gets the mount for trainer Daniel Oberholtzer, and in a maiden race where the bottom half of the field has limited form, Biz Appeal's relative edge makes it a logical show inclusion. In a race this volatile, having that third slot covered with a horse showing some class separation makes sense.
Race 3
Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
Oki comes in as a clear class standout in this 6-furlong claiming event, carrying a top rating that dwarfs the field — but Miami Souvenirs is right there on the morning line as the public's choice.
Oki is our win pick and the most dominant horse on the ratings sheet in Race 3, checking in at 88.54 — a significant gap over the second-rated horse, Miami Souvenirs at 71.38. That's not a minor separation; that's a legitimate class edge in a claiming field. Trainer Colten Mead sends Oki out with jockey Orlando Foster, and at 2/1 on the morning line, there's still some value here for a horse that profiles as the best in the race by a wide margin. A 26% career win rate adds confidence that this one knows how to close the deal.
Miami Souvenirs is the morning line favorite at 8/5, which actually creates a slight overlay situation on Oki if the public keeps pouring money on the 2-horse. Trainer Garry Marks puts Trevor Simpson on this one, and a 10% career win rate in a claiming field isn't alarming — it just means the horse competes consistently without always getting the job done. As a place play, Miami Souvenirs should be right in the mix at the top of the stretch.
Silver Sign at 5/2 with a 12% career win rate is the third wheel in what shapes up as a fairly chalk-forward race. Ryan Nelson takes the mount for trainer Justin P. Weaselhead, and while the rating of 57.96 is a step below the top two, Silver Sign's career win percentage is actually higher than Miami Souvenirs, which is worth noting. As a show bet or in the show position of an exacta box, Silver Sign gives you solid downside protection.
Our three free races today form a natural progression through the card. Thunder Gold (Race 1, 2/1 morning line) kicks things off in the opener allowance sprint at 5½ furlongs — a solid TrackWiz rating of 88.54 puts this one near the top of the board and suggests the morning line is right in line with our numbers. Properly Proper (Race 2, 5/2) draws our attention in the maiden affair, where sorting out who belongs can be tricky but the TrackWiz model sees a clear edge. Then Oki (Race 3, 2/1) closes out the free look in a 6-furlong claimer — another 88.54 rating, which is a recurring number today and speaks to how competitive this card runs top to bottom.
One angle worth watching on a partly cloudy October afternoon at Lethbridge: the dirt tends to play fair and true in these conditions — no heavy moisture to shift pace dynamics, no blistering heat to drain late runners. That sets up well for horses that can control the pace early in these sprint-heavy races, so keep an eye on early speed in all three free races.
