Keeneland Picks & Predictions — October 22, 2026
It's a gorgeous Thursday at Keeneland — 66°F, skies clear, and the Lexington air carrying that crisp October feel that makes this track one of the best places on earth to watch horses run. Conditions are about as good as it gets, so expect the dirt and turf surfaces to play fair and fast today.
We've got a 9-race card on tap, mixing maiden claimers and maiden special weights early before the card opens up into allowance company — including a pair of turf sprints and routes that should produce some of the sharpest performances of the afternoon. There's real variety here, which means real opportunity.
TrackWiz analysis has combed through the full field, and we like what we see at both ends of the card. Three races are unlocked and free for everyone, with six premium races reserved for subscribers. Let's get into it.
Best Bets
Race 1
Claiming · 7 fur · Dirt
A competitive 7-furlong claiming opener where the top TrackWiz ratings are tightly bunched — Zafyre edges out Revel Toast by just over a point, setting up a potential front-running duel with real upset potential lurking at mid-range odds.
Zafyre lands on top of our ratings at 82.71 despite going off at a generous 6/1 morning line — that's the kind of overlay TrackWiz analysis loves to find in a claiming field. The #4 posts a solid 55 average speed figure matching the top tier of this field, and trainer Jerry Antonuik sends him out with a 20% career win rate on the horse, suggesting connections know when the animal is right. Dylan Machado gets the call and the partnership has the tools to steal this if the pace sets up favorably from the rail-adjacent post. At 6/1, this is our value pick of the race.
Revel Toast is the public's second choice at 7/2 and earns it — an 81.42 TrackWiz rating and a career win clip of 25% make him legitimately dangerous in this field. Jose L. Ortiz picks up the mount, which is never a bad sign, and the horse's average speed figure of 55 ties him with the top group. He's the safest place ticket in this race given the profile.
Sweet Bebsi at 5/1 is worth slotting into your exotics at the bottom of the ticket. The rating of 75.93 is third-best in the field and the 55 average speed figure keeps pace with the leaders, giving trainer Ryan D. Walsh a live runner that could easily hit the board if the top two get into a speed duel and tire late.
Race 2
Maiden Claiming · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt
A wide-open maiden claiming sprint where most of the field has little or no prior speed data — expect pace confusion early as first-time starters and lightly raced types feel each other out over 6½ furlongs of Keeneland dirt.
Big Star Bound draws the 2/1 morning line and backs it up with the top TrackWiz rating in the field at 58.33, a meaningful edge in a race this thin on established form. The Wesley A. Ward and John Velazquez combination is one of the most productive in the sport when Ward points a horse to a specific spot — this has the hallmarks of a targeted effort. With no career win percentage to lean on (maiden first-timer), the pedigree and connections are doing the heavy lifting here, and they're worth trusting.
Borax checks in at a 56.67 rating and posts a 54 average speed figure — one of only three horses in this field with any recorded speed figure at all. The Steve Asmussen barn knows how to spot a maiden to break its maiden, and Luis Saez gives this runner a rider who can nurse a green horse into position. At 3/1, the place price should be fair.
With You opens at 7/2 with the third-highest rating in the field at 55.83, piloted by Jose L. Ortiz for trainer Eddie Kenneally. While no speed figure is on record, the morning line respect and jockey assignment suggest connections are expecting a forward effort. In a race this unpredictable, getting a rated contender at 7/2 to hit the board is a reasonable ask.
Race 3
Maiden Claiming · 1 1/8 mi · Dirt
The morning-line favorite at 7/5 won't have things all her own way in this 1⅛-mile maiden claiming test — My King Air's rating towers over the field and could make this a one-horse show if the pace plays fair on a two-turn trip.
My King Air is the standout of this field on TrackWiz numbers, posting an 84.9 rating that is more than 11 points clear of the next competitor — a margin that's hard to ignore even at 9/2 morning line odds against a 7/5 favorite. Luis Saez takes the mount for Joe Sharp, who is one of Keeneland's best trainers at targeting appropriate spots. The horse carries a 53 average speed figure over the route distance, which fits the 1⅛-mile profile well, and the combination of elite ratings, elite jockey, and elite trainer makes this our strongest play of the first three races.
Get Them Roses opens as the public's choice at 7/5 despite sitting second in our ratings at 73.2 — a significant gap vs. My King Air. That said, connections clearly think this horse is ready, and Axel Concepcion is a capable pilot at the distance. At a short price, the place ticket is where the value lives if you're including this horse in your ticket.
Bourbon Rage is a legitimate longshot angle for exotics at 15/1 with a 68.54 rating that is third-best in this field — quietly one of the strongest profiles in the bottom half of the board. Trainer Ryan D. Walsh sends this horse with William Antongeorgi III up, and the 52 average speed figure is competitive for this class level. If the top two get into a pace battle on the far turn, Bourbon Rage has the figures to swoop in for third.
The free portion of today's card is a solid starting point. Zafyre opens things up in Race 1 at 6/1 on the morning line — a claiming sprint on dirt where our ratings peg this horse as the clear top choice at a number that should offer genuine value against the chalk. In Race 2, Big Star Bound comes in as the morning-line favorite in a maiden claimer going 6½ furlongs, though the 58-range rating tells you this field is wide open — approach with some caution. Race 3 is the most intriguing freebie: My King Air draws a 9/2 line in a maiden claimer stretching to 1⅛ miles on dirt, and the 84.9 TrackWiz rating is the highest of the three free picks — a real chance to find value at a price.
With clear skies and a fast track, pace scenarios in these shorter dirt sprints should be straightforward. Keep an eye on early speed — on a day like today at Keeneland, horses that can press or stalk from a forward position are positioned well heading into the stretch.
