Keeneland Picks & Predictions — October 14, 2026
It's a beautiful Wednesday at Keeneland — partly cloudy skies, temperatures sitting at a comfortable 82°F, and an eight-race card that gives us plenty to dig into. The Lexington oval has been one of the sport's best venues all fall, and today's mix of dirt sprints, route races, and turf allowances keeps things interesting from the first post to the finale.
We've got three free best bets available to every TrackWiz reader, covering the first three races on the card. After that, the card tilts toward turf and routes — exactly the kind of conditions that reward sharp handicapping and multi-race wagering. Let's break it all down.
Best Bets
Race 1
Starter Allowance · 1 1/16 mi · Dirt
A starter allowance with a clear class standout at the top, but the second and third choices are close enough in ratings to keep the exotics interesting over 1 1/16 miles of dirt.
West Coast Dream is the easy standout here — a TrackWiz rating of 89.71 towers over the rest of this field, and that 50% career win rate is elite by any measure. Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the irons is exactly the kind of rider you want when you're sending out a horse at 6/5 and need him to handle pressure. At a mile and a sixteenth, there's enough ground for this horse to find his best stride, and nothing in this field looks capable of running him off his feet. Bet the chalk, but shop for the best number you can find before post.
Cara Felce brings a 40% career win rate into this spot, which is quietly excellent for a starter allowance field — Rafael Bejarano keeps the horse in good hands. At 9/5 on the morning line, the place pool may offer a touch of overlay value if the crowd lumps heavily on West Coast Dream to win. The TrackWiz rating of 66.33 puts her clearly in the secondary tier, making her the logical bridesmaid.
Speed Skater at 10/1 is the sneaky inclusion in the exotics, and the value case starts with the price — the morning line implies far less support than the 61.08 TrackWiz rating might warrant relative to some of the other runners. A 28% career win rate is respectable in this company, and Cody Axmaker doesn't send horses to Keeneland without believing they can fire. Use in trifectas underneath the top two.
Race 2
Maiden Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
Wide-open maiden claiming chaos over six furlongs — all ten runners are first-time winners, so pedigree, trainer intent, and speed figures from workouts do the heavy lifting in separating the contenders.
Shot At Perfection draws the TrackWiz top rating in this field at 82.71, which is a significant gap over the competition in a race where every horse is looking for that elusive first win. Joel Rosario is one of the sharpest riders in the country at identifying pace and position in sprint maidens, and trainer Ron Moquett has a knack for placing horses in spots where they can graduate. The 6/1 morning line feels generous given the rating advantage — this looks like a legitimate overlay.
Sister Wife, drawn in the 9 hole, carries a 73.65 TrackWiz rating and a solid average speed figure of 54, putting her right in the mix for the runner-up spot. Francisco Arrieta gets the call, and the outside post in a six-furlong sprint can actually be a gift if the inner horses get tangled early. At 9/2, she's fairly priced and worth using as a key underneath Shot At Perfection in exactas.
Christy comes in without a published speed figure, which often means a lightly-raced or debut horse — and in maiden races, first-time starters trained by Brendan Walsh with Flavien Prat up deserve serious respect. The 3/1 morning line suggests the market already knows something here, and the 56.67 TrackWiz rating checks out for a board price. Include her in the show slot of trifectas as a hedge against the unknown.
Race 3
Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
Show Time enters as a heavy favorite with a dominant TrackWiz rating, but a deep nine-horse claiming field on dirt means the pace scenario and post draw could shake up the order behind him.
Show Time is the class of this field — a 89.27 TrackWiz rating and a 3/2 morning line both tell the same story. Joel Rosario partnering with David Jacobson is a sharp combo, and the 32% career win rate in a claiming field shows a horse who knows how to get the job done when conditions are right. The 56 average speed figure ties for tops among the contenders, and at six furlongs, Rosario can put him wherever he needs to be on the pace.
Heavenlyconveyance has a 66.44 TrackWiz rating and consistent speed figures of 55 across starts — she's the type of grinder who can rally into a place check when the speed horses burn each other up. Jose Ortiz aboard adds a layer of confidence, and McLean Robertson is a trainer who keeps his horses fit. At 9/2, she's a value play for the place spot in exactas.
Lucky Shot at 6/1 brings a 65.54 TrackWiz rating and a 56 average speed figure that matches the top echelon of this field numerically. Cameron Milligan doesn't run horses at Keeneland to fill a spot — there's intention here. Adam Beschizza is underrated in sprint races, and the morning line price makes Lucky Shot a worthwhile show bet and trifecta piece.
The first three races are your free look at today's Keeneland card, and there's some real meat here. West Coast Dream opens the day as the morning-line favorite in the Starter Allowance going 1 1/16 miles on dirt — a horse our analysis rates at 89.71, one of the stronger numbers on the entire card. In Race 2, Shot At Perfection draws our eye as a 6/1 morning-line underdog in a dirt maiden claimer, the kind of price that can set up a nice exacta payout if she fires her best race. Then Show Time steps in at 3/2 in Race 3 — a short price, yes, but an 89.27 TrackWiz rating backs up the confidence.
With a firm, fast Keeneland dirt surface expected under these partly cloudy conditions, early pace and front-running ability could be key angles to watch in all three dirt sprints. Keep that bias in mind when you're building your tickets.
