Finger Lakes Picks & Predictions — October 6, 2026
It's a crisp Tuesday afternoon at Finger Lakes — clear skies, 54°F, and a fast dirt surface that should reward horses who can get to the front and hold their ground. Eight races are on the slate today, mixing claiming and allowance company with a maiden special weight thrown in the mix, giving us plenty of angles to work through.
October racing at The Finger Lakes often catches horses near the end of their campaign peaks — some shipping in for easier spots, others trying to squeeze out one more win before the meet wraps. That class movement creates opportunity, and today's card has more than a few spots worth circling. Our TrackWiz ratings span from 82 to nearly 89, which tells us there's a clear tier of standouts worth prioritizing.
Three races are open to all readers today, and we like what we see at the top. Trew Violence, Big Advantage, and Father Walsh each carry strong TrackWiz ratings and favorable morning line prices — the kind of combination that makes for a productive afternoon at the windows.
Best Bets
Race 1
Claiming · 1 1/16 mi · Dirt
The top of the card features a clustering of mid-range ratings with one clear standout, but a pair of 8/1 shots are close enough on the numbers to keep the exacta wide open.
Trew Violence draws the top TrackWiz rating in the field at 85.36 and comes in as the morning-line favorite at 5/2 — a combination that demands respect in a claiming route. A 14% career win rate is solid for a claimer, and trainer John A. Grabowski puts Luis Pena in the irons, a booking that signals confidence. At 1 1/16 miles on the dirt, Trew Violence's profile fits the distance well. If he breaks clean from the four hole, he should be in the mix turning for home.
Instant Success is one of the sneaky plays of the race at 8/1 on the morning line despite carrying the second-highest TrackWiz rating (79.79) and the best average speed figure in the field at 53. A 13% career win rate gives him legitimate credentials, and trainer Ralph D'Alessandro knows how to spot horses in spots where they can hit the board. At those odds, he's a prime place-show vehicle in exactas.
Notfanutin sits just behind Instant Success in the ratings at 79.26 with identical average speed figures (51), which makes the 5/1 morning line feel reasonable rather than generous. An 8% career win rate is modest, but trainer Katlynn Gutterson has been active at the meet, and Emanuel De Diego is a capable hand. In a race where the top three by rating are separated by only about six points, Notfanutin profiles as a legitimate show factor.
Race 2
Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
Big Advantage looks like the class of this six-furlong claiming sprint, but Cinnamon Sugar and Lollipops post strong career win percentages that could make this a heated pace battle down the lane.
Big Advantage owns the highest TrackWiz rating in the field at 88.54 and backs it up with a career win percentage of 25% — the kind of number that stands out in a claiming sprint. His average speed figure of 54 ties for the best in the race, and Jeremias Flores gets the call for trainer Paul W. Barrow. At a morning line of 2/1, he's not a value play, but in this field, his raw numbers justify the chalk role. The question is whether the pace sets up for him.
Cinnamon Sugar pairs a strong 79.09 TrackWiz rating with an average speed figure of 54 and a 15% career win rate, making her a legitimate threat to fill the exacta slot behind the favorite. Andre Shivnarine Worrie has been one of the busier jockeys on the card, and trainer Charlton Baker places horses well. At 5/2 on the morning line, she's almost certain to be underlaid if the crowd follows the numbers, but she's the most logical horse to chase Big Advantage home.
Only in My Dreams posts a respectable 68.47 TrackWiz rating and a 12% career win rate, and at 5/1 she brings some value to the show pool and the bottom of exactas. Trainer David Oyola pairs with Oscar Gomez here, a workmanlike combination at Finger Lakes. Her average speed figure of 53 is in line with the pace of this race, and if the top two hook up early, she could be closing into a contested lane.
Race 3
Claiming · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
Father Walsh brings a commanding rating advantage into this 5.5-furlong claiming sprint, but Allo Enry's top speed figure in the field creates an interesting pace question heading into the stretch.
Father Walsh tops the TrackWiz ratings at 87.08 and checks in with a 15% career win rate — numbers that make him the clear selection in this field. Chris Russell gets the mount for trainer Michael T. Sabine, and the Sabine barn has been sending horses out ready to fire at Finger Lakes this meet. His average speed figure of 54 is competitive for this level, and the 3/1 morning line is fair given the margin he holds over the rest. Expect him to be forwardly placed from the two hole.
Allo Enry is the speed figure standout of the race with an average of 55 — the lone horse in the field to hit that number — and Keiber J. Coa is one of the sharper jockey pickups on the card. Trainer Jon G. Arnett puts him in at 4/1, which represents decent place value given the raw speed edge. If he can control or press the pace through the first quarter, he's tough to dismiss at the price.
Max Foster brings a 64.35 TrackWiz rating and a 12% career win rate to the table at 5/1, making him a reasonable show play in a race where the pace could sort things out for closers. Trainer David Oyola and Oscar Gomez have combined on horses that find their way onto the podium at this level. His average speed figure of 54 puts him in the same conversation as much of the field, and the price is worth a small inclusion in trifectas.
Our three free best bets today cover the first half of the card and span two sprint distances and a route. Big Advantage in Race 2 carries the highest TrackWiz rating of the free trio at 88.54 — that's the kind of number that stands out in a six-furlong dirt claimer. On a firm, fast surface like today's, sharp speed figures tend to translate directly, and the 2/1 morning line suggests the market already has some respect for this horse. Father Walsh at 3/1 in Race 3 offers a bit more value, and Trew Violence opens the card in a one-turn route — a 1 1/16-mile trip that should sort itself out quickly on this surface.
The through-line connecting these three? All are on dirt, all should benefit from the dry, firm conditions, and none are being asked to do anything beyond what their recent form suggests they're capable of. Keep an eye on pace flow early in the day — if you see speed holding up in Races 1 and 2, lean into that angle heading into Race 3 as well.
