Evangeline Picks & Predictions — October 17, 2026
It's a gorgeous fall Saturday at Evangeline Downs — clear skies, 67°F, and a 7-race quarter horse card that has something for everyone. Conditions are about as close to ideal as you'll get in Louisiana this time of year, and a fast, consistent surface should let pure speed show up all afternoon.
The card spans distances from a lightning-quick 220-yard maiden opener all the way out to the 870-yard Stakes closer — an unusual and fun range that tests different types of horses and creates some genuinely interesting pace puzzles. There's no shortage of angles to dig into here.
Three races are open to all TrackWiz readers today, with our top-rated picks in Races 1 through 3 fully detailed below. The back half of the card — including the Stakes feature — is reserved for subscribers, and trust us, that's where it gets really interesting.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden · 220 yd · Dirt
Nine maidens break from the gate in a 220-yard sprint — the shortest trip on the card — and our TrackWiz ratings show a clear top tier with Apollitcal Tequila standing well above the rest in a field where no horse has yet won.
Apollitcal Tequila draws the morning-line favoritism at 2/1 for good reason — a TrackWiz rating of 79.12 is the highest in this field by a wide margin, nearly 22 points clear of the next horse. Bobby Ransom gets the call for trainer Trey Ellis, a combination that commands respect in short-format quarter horse sprints. In a maiden dash over 220 yards, raw ability is almost everything, and our analysis says this horse has the most of it in the field.
Canelita Chick lands on our place ticket at 4/1 with a TrackWiz rating of 57.35, good enough for second-best in the field. Trainer Luis R. Martinez, Jr. teams with jockey Eddi Emanuel Martinez — a familiar duo at Evangeline — which adds some confidence that this horse will be pointed and ready. At morning-line odds of 4/1, there's legitimate place value if the top two in our ratings run 1-2 as expected.
Miss Piloto Chrome rounds out our exacta/trifecta coverage at 3/1 on the morning line, and her rating of 56.67 sits just a tick behind Canelita Chick. Trainer Mardonio Flores, Jr. and jockey Lucas Constantin give her a competent handling team. She's worth including underneath in trifecta tickets — a wide-open maiden field like this one is exactly where show prices can offer real value.
Race 2
Starter Optional Claiming · 550 yd · Dirt
A six-horse Starter Optional Claiming field at 550 yards presents a clear top two on paper, but the question is whether Sheet N Gheet's edge over Ana Maria is large enough to justify the short price — and whether Dead Winner can creep into the exotics.
Sheet N Gheet goes postward as the 2/1 morning-line choice under Bobby Ransom for trainer Mardonio Flores, Jr., and the numbers support the favoritism. A TrackWiz rating of 88.54 leads this field comfortably, and a career win rate of 23% is the best among all starters in Race 2. The 550-yard distance rewards horses that can sustain speed, and Sheet N Gheet's profile suggests exactly that kind of versatile sprinter.
Ana Maria comes in at 7/2 with a rating of 78.76 and a career win percentage of 17%, making her a legitimate threat to finish in the exacta. Trainer Salvador G. Flores sends her out under Rene Hernandez, and while she trails our top pick on raw ratings, the gap is not insurmountable. She's the logical place horse in a race where the favorite is beatable but not necessarily by a longshot.
Dead Winner is an intriguing show-ticket option at 5/1 on the morning line, carrying a TrackWiz rating of 72.24 and a career win clip of 19%. Trainer Anthony Arey and rider Leonardo Rodriguez keep the connections straightforward. At that morning-line price, Dead Winner offers show-ticket value if the top two hold chalk and he hangs around for a piece.
Race 3
Allowance · 400 yd · Dirt
This 400-yard Allowance features two heavyweights at the top of the ratings — Cosimabadmammajamma and Cajun Tide — setting up what looks like a two-horse race at the front of the field, with a potential longshot lurking at a juicy price.
Cosimabadmammajamma — say that three times fast — tops our TrackWiz ratings at 88.54 and carries a career win percentage of 40%, which is exceptional at the allowance level. Trainer Jose U. Lopez sends this horse out under Noe Castaneda, and a 40% win rate over a career suggests this horse doesn't just show up — it finishes. At 2/1 on the morning line, the price is fair for a horse that is genuinely the class of this field.
Cajun Tide is the morning-line favorite at 8/5 and brings a stunning 50% career win percentage to the table — the best rate among all starters in today's race. That said, our TrackWiz rating of 76.17 puts it about 12 points behind the top pick, which is why we slot it as the place horse. Trainer Kenneth Weeks and rider Servando Ramirez are a steady combination, and a horse winning half its career starts is never easy to dismiss.
Hezaspecial Lorenzo is our show selection at 8/1 morning line with a TrackWiz rating of 49.56, and this is where the exotic value lives in Race 3. Trainer Emily Jeane and rider Rene Hernandez give this horse a capable team, and in a six-horse field where the top two may battle each other, a closer type like Hezaspecial Lorenzo can sneak into the trifecta. The price makes including him in your tickets worthwhile.
Our three free-preview races cover the early part of the card, and they're a strong sampler of what Evangeline is serving up today. Apollitcal Tequila sets things off in the 220-yard maiden opener at morning-line odds of 2/1 — a sprint so short that gate speed and reaction time are almost everything. From there, Sheet N Gheet draws our attention in the 550-yard Starter Optional Claiming in Race 2, where our TrackWiz rating of 88.54 puts this horse well clear of the field on paper. Race 3 brings another 88.54-rated effort from Cosimabadmammajamma in an Allowance at 400 yards — a distance that suits pure quarter horse firepower.
The through-line across all three free picks? Each figures to be on or near the lead from the jump, and on a clear, dry Evangeline surface, front-runners tend to hold. Watch for early fractions to be blistering — and back horses that can match that early pace rather than those relying on a closing kick at these short distances.
