Evangeline Picks & Predictions — October 15, 2026
Clear skies, 83 degrees, and seven quick-burst races on the dirt — it's a beautiful Thursday afternoon at Evangeline Downs, and the card is loaded with Quarter Horse action ranging from 220 yards all the way out to the 440-yard closer. Conditions look ideal, with no weather interference expected to shake up the running surface.
The full card spans maiden sprints, claiming battles, and a pair of allowance features that should draw sharp money. Three of today's seven races are open for everyone on TrackWiz, and our ratings are pointing to some legitimate value scattered across the afternoon — including a morning-line longshot in the early going that our model likes quite a bit.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden · 300 yd · Dirt
A wide-open maiden sprint over 300 yards with no career stats to lean on, so our TrackWiz ratings do the heavy lifting — and there's a clear two-horse battle shaping up at the top.
Jess Found a Dynasty owns the top TrackWiz rating in this field at 87.08, a meaningful edge over even the morning-line favorite Hey Pal. Trainer Viviane Hill sends this one out in capable hands with jockey Leonardo Rodriguez, a combination that commands respect in a maiden field this green. At 3/1 on the morning line, there's real value here — the rating gap between the top two is significant enough to make this our confident top selection.
Hey Pal is the public's choice at 9/5 and backs it up with an 80.43 TrackWiz rating — second-best in the field. Trainer Carlos A. Fierro and jockey Ubaldo Luna form a sharp connection, and in a first-time starter sprint at 300 yards, getting to the wire in second is a very realistic outcome for this one.
I Run to U stands out as a sneaky inclusion at 12/1 on the morning line with a 61.03 rating — third in the field and offering real overlay potential. In a 10-horse maiden field where the top of the market may attract heavy action, sprinkling I Run to U into your exotics at those odds makes smart financial sense for the show position.
Race 2
Claiming · 220 yd · Dirt
This short-field claiming sprint at 220 yards has a clear standout at the top, but a pair of value-priced horses with solid career win percentages could shake up the exacta and make this race worth attacking in the exotics.
Never James tops our TrackWiz ratings at 88.83, the highest mark in the field and backed by a 20% career win rate — respectable for a claiming sprinter. Jockey Ubaldo Luna is doing the riding here, and Luna showed up with Hey Pal in Race 1, signaling he's an active and capable presence on the card. At 9/5 on the morning line, the market agrees — this is the one to beat.
Rl Prize Shadow is the sleeper of this race. A 33% career win rate is the best figure in the entire field, and that kind of strike rate doesn't happen by accident. Trainer Kenneth Weeks has this one rolling at a high clip, and at 10/1 on the morning line against a 66.53 rating, a place finish at those odds represents outstanding value in the exacta.
Jess Lika Train checks in with a 65.64 TrackWiz rating — third best in the field — and gets the call from trainer Trevor Soileau, who also runs a horse in Race 1 and clearly knows this Evangeline circuit. At 6/1, there's enough price here to warrant show inclusion in your exotics, especially in a short nine-horse field at a blistering 220 yards.
Race 3
Maiden · 300 yd · Dirt
Three horses are clustered near the top of the TrackWiz ratings in this 10-horse maiden dash, but the morning line and our numbers don't fully agree — which is exactly where the value lives in a race like this.
Water Lily earns our top pick despite going off at 9/2 on the morning line, which already hints at value. Her TrackWiz rating of 84.90 leads the field, and trainer Braulio Hernandez sends her out with Pedro Chavarria Espinosa up — a jockey who appears on multiple cards today and brings solid local experience. In a first-time-starter sprint, numbers and connections are what we have to go on, and Water Lily's stack up best.
Princester comes in as the morning-line favorite at 3/1 with an 81.74 TrackWiz rating and draws the 10 hole — a spot that in short dirt sprints can require a clean break to matter. Trainer Juan M. Montoya, Jr. puts J.R. Ramirez in the irons, a jockey who also handles the 10 post well. If Princester fires, a place finish is a near-certainty given the rating and connections.
Railroad Jenny is worth including in your show tickets at 2/1 — she's the public's second choice and carries a 78.63 TrackWiz rating into a field where that's good for third. Trainer Ramiro Aboytes-Suarez and jockey Leonardo Rodriguez form a pairing that appears in multiple races today, and consistency like that on a regional circuit is a legitimate positive angle.
Our three free-access races give you a strong starting point for the day. The action kicks off with Jess Found a Dynasty (87.08 rating, 3/1 morning line) in the opening 300-yard maiden, followed by Never James carrying our highest free-race rating of 88.83 into Race 2's 220-yard claiming sprint — that's a short, violent race where clean breaks decide everything. Then keep an eye on Water Lily in Race 3, a fellow 300-yard maiden where our model lands on her at 9/2 despite the modest raw rating of 84.90. In short Quarter Horse sprints, overlays at that price can be exactly the kind of value that pays for the afternoon.
The common thread across these early races: gate speed is king at Evangeline, and on a firm, fast dirt surface under clear skies, expect the horses who break cleanly and get to the lead early to be very tough to run down. Use that bias as your lens when handicapping these opening legs.
