Evangeline Picks & Predictions — October 8, 2026
It's a beautiful Thursday at Evangeline Downs — clear skies, 83°F, and fast dirt underfoot. Conditions like these are exactly what speed-first quarter horses love, and today's 7-race card is loaded with short, explosive sprints that should produce some razor-sharp clockings from gate to wire.
The card leans heavily toward the shorter distances — four races going 220 yards and three at 300 — so pace shape matters less than raw acceleration and gate break. On a dry, firm track like today's, the horses that fire first out of the gate are going to be very tough to catch. Keep that in mind as you build your tickets.
We've got three free races to get your day started and four premium races behind the paywall where, frankly, some of the most interesting value plays on the card are hiding — including an 8/1 morning-line shot in Race 6 that our ratings have circled in red.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden · 220 yd · Dirt
A wide-open maiden sprint over 220 yards with zero career wins across the entire field — TrackWiz ratings separate the contenders from the longshots in a race where the top-rated horse carries a significant edge.
Anothermonday (No. 2) is the standout in this maiden field by a considerable margin, posting a TrackWiz rating of 87.81 — more than 20 points clear of the next-best runner. Trainer Larry D. Keith sends this one out with jockey Everardo Rodriguez in the irons, a pairing worth noting in a race where almost nothing else grades out strongly. At 5/2 on the morning line, you're not getting a huge overlay, but the rating separation here is too wide to ignore. In maiden short-track sprints like this 220-yard dash, ability tends to show up fast — and Anothermonday's profile suggests it belongs at the head of the class.
Jb Jess Lights (No. 6) checks in as the second-strongest rated horse in the field at 66.91, a solid gap above the mid-tier runners. Randy Edison Jr. picks up the mount for trainer Jose Carrizales, and at 9/2 on the morning line, there's some value if you're building exotics. This one profiles as a legitimate place contender who could run down whoever challenges Anothermonday in a short sprint where things happen in a blink.
Ttt Magic James (No. 9) rates third in the field at 52.27, giving trainer Emily Jeane and jockey Bobby Ransom a shot to grab a piece at a juicy 10/1 morning line. In a maiden field this thin on established form, the rating advantage matters — and Magic James sits comfortably ahead of half this field. A solid show ticket inclusion, especially for horizontal players building exacta and trifecta combinations.
Race 2
Claiming · 300 yd · Dirt
A claiming sprint over 300 yards headlined by two horses that grade well above the rest — this shapes up as a two-horse battle at the top, with the rest of the field playing for minor awards.
Tf Majestic Eyes (No. 2) leads the field with a TrackWiz rating of 88.54 and pairs that with a 33% career win rate — the strongest combination in this race by a clear margin. Jockey Federico Vargas gets the call for trainer Jose U. Lopez, who has a horse in the exacta spot as well, suggesting stable confidence. At 2/1 on the morning line, this is the morning-line favorite, but the rating and win percentage justify the chalk. In a 300-yard dirt sprint at Evangeline, a horse with this kind of proven winning form is exactly what you want to be on.
Tg Amount Dasher (No. 8) is right behind the top pick with a TrackWiz rating of 84.97, and trainer Luis R. Martinez, Jr. has Eddi Emanuel Martinez in the saddle — a combo that shows up together repeatedly on this card, suggesting confidence in their horses. The 14% career win rate is modest, but a rating near 85 means this horse has the talent to be competitive right to the wire. At 3/1, the place spot looks secure and the exacta with the top pick is the natural play.
Wild Graces (No. 3) at 8/1 on the morning line offers some underdog appeal with a TrackWiz rating of 58.09 — well below the top two but clearly rated above the rest of the claiming field. Trainer Mardonio Flores, Jr. and jockey Leonardo Palomo team up here, and a 16% career win rate shows this horse has found the winner's circle before. In a field where the top two may battle each other, Wild Graces has enough talent to grab the bronze.
Race 3
Claiming · 220 yd · Dirt
A claiming sprint at 220 yards that features a trio of horses rated in the mid-to-high 60s and 80s battling for supremacy — the morning line underestimates at least two key runners, setting up potential value in the exotics.
Jtf Fast Dulce (No. 6) tops the TrackWiz ratings at 87.08 and draws the 3/1 morning line — not the favorite, which is actually a touch surprising given the edge. Trainer Jesus Huitron Lira sends out Alejandro Ochoa, and a 20% career win rate shows this horse has been around the winner's circle. In a short 220-yard dirt sprint, the highest-rated horse in the field has a natural advantage when there's very little time for pace scenarios to develop. This is the TrackWiz top selection with conviction.
Kb Fabulous Eagle (No. 9) rates a strong 85.28 and connects trainer Jose U. Lopez with jockey Noe Castaneda — a pairing that also appears elsewhere on today's card. The 20% career win rate is respectable, and at 7/2 on the morning line, the morning-line price doesn't fully reflect how close this horse is to the win pick in our ratings. Kb Fabulous Eagle looks like the most logical place horse and could easily reverse the finish order with a good break.
Kj Man Or Rain (No. 4) is a hidden gem in this spot — rated 69.38 by TrackWiz, which is good for third in the field, yet posted at 10/1 on the morning line. Trainer Ricardo Saul Castillo and jockey Eddi Emanuel Martinez team up here, and a 14% career win rate in a claiming field suggests this horse is capable of running a competitive race. At double-digit odds, this one makes plenty of sense in trifectas where the top two are your key horses.
The first three races on the card give us a solid foundation to work with. In the opener — a 220-yard maiden — Anothermonday comes in at 5/2 on the morning line with a TrackWiz rating of 87.81, good enough to top a maiden field where consistency at the break often separates the contenders from the also-rans. Race 2 shifts to 300 yards and gives us Tf Majestic Eyes as the morning-line favorite at 2/1 with the highest rating of the free races at 88.54 — that's a number we respect on a fast track. Race 3 tightens back up to 220 yards with Jtf Fast Dulce offering a bit more price at 3/1.
The common thread across all three free races: with the track playing fast today, horses that have demonstrated clean gate habits have a meaningful edge. If you're playing these races as a sequence, look for clean, consistent profiles rather than boom-or-bust types. Value is there in the opener and Race 3 if the pools set up right.
