Evangeline Picks & Predictions — July 31, 2026
It's a warm Friday at Evangeline Downs — 92 degrees under partly cloudy skies — and the horses are set to run a full nine-race card today. Heat like this can take a toll late in a race, so watch for speed horses that can steal it early and get the jump before the stretch run turns into a grind.
The card mixes maiden claimers, straight claimers, a starter optional claiming race, an allowance optional claimer, and a stakes race to cap off the afternoon. Plenty of variety, and our TrackWiz ratings are spread across a tight range for most of the card — which tells us there's genuine competitiveness (and genuine value) to be found up and down the program.
Three races are open to all readers today, giving everyone a solid taste of what the full card has to offer. If you like what you see, the premium breakdown covers the remaining six races in full detail.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Claiming · 5 fur · Dirt
A wide-open maiden claimer where every horse carries a 0% career win rate, making TrackWiz ratings the clearest separator — Lucky Juan sits atop the field by a significant margin.
Lucky Juan (No. 4) earns the top TrackWiz rating in this field at 87.81 — a sizeable gap over the second-rated Faye L. at 77.67. His average speed figure of 53 ties She's Wild Again for the highest among the contenders, and trainer Brett A. Brinkman pairs with jockey Javier Antonio Hernandez for what looks like a capable combination. At 5/2 on the morning line, the market agrees, but that rating edge justifies the short price in a wide-open maiden field.
Faye L. (No. 7) is the logical backup at 7/2, posting a 77.67 TrackWiz rating that puts her clearly second in this field. Her average speed figure of 52 is right in the mix, and trainer Isai V. Gonzalez has shown an ability to place horses competitively at this level. She's a natural include in exactas and trifectas underneath Lucky Juan.
Candy Girl Miss (No. 3) offers sneaky value at 8/1 on the morning line with a 60.84 rating — the third-highest in the field. Her average speed of 52 is respectable for a maiden claimer at five furlongs, and trainer Jacoby Landry gives her a decent shot to hit the board. At those odds, she's a cost-effective show play and a nice trifecta addition.
Race 2
Claiming · 1 mi · Dirt
Three horses are bunched within two points at the top of the TrackWiz ratings, setting up a legitimate trifecta battle — but Aryton's proven win percentage gives him the edge in what should be a competitive mile on dirt.
Aryton (No. 8) tops the TrackWiz ratings at 87.08 and backs it up with a 14% career win rate — the best in the field — under trainer Isai V. Gonzalez, who also saddles Bolt's Treasure. Jockey Efigenio Garcia Ruiz gets the call, and Aryton's average speed figure of 52 is solid for a one-mile claiming test. At 3/1 on the morning line, this is a well-priced top selection, not a chalk play.
No Rematch (No. 2) posts an 86.62 TrackWiz rating — barely a half-point behind Aryton — with an average speed figure of 53 that actually leads the field. The 0% career win rate on a 2/1 morning line raises a flag, but his raw speed numbers suggest he'll be competitive, and a place finish at that price is worth playing.
Bolt's Treasure (No. 4) rounds out what looks like a natural top three at 85.58 on TrackWiz's model, sharing the same barn (Isai V. Gonzalez) as the top pick Aryton. His 4% career win rate and 53 average speed figure make him a viable third wheel in the exotics, and jockey Elio J. Barrera brings solid riding experience to this mile test.
Race 3
Claiming · 5 fur · Turf
Dreamrosa is a heavy favorite on the morning line for good reason, but the five-furlong turf setup could play into the hands of a couple of live contenders — the real question is whether anyone can chase her down.
Dreamrosa (No. 5) is the standout of this field with an 88.83 TrackWiz rating — the top number in the race — and a career win rate of 25% that speaks to real talent on the turf. Her average speed figure of 55 matches the pace-setting Lee Circle but comes with a much stronger overall profile. Trainer Jayde J. Gelner and jockey Elio J. Barrera look like a sharp combination, and at 9/5 on the morning line, the market is pricing her correctly as the one to beat.
My Other Half (No. 1) is a natural backup at 5/2 with an 85.80 TrackWiz rating and a 9% career win rate that shows he competes consistently at this level. His average speed of 55 matches the top tier, and trainer Allen Landry with jockey Jansen Melancon is a pairing worth respecting at Evangeline. He's the most logical place horse in the race.
Lee Circle (No. 6) is a fascinating show play at 5/1 — he owns the highest average speed figure in the field at 56 and a remarkable 50% career win rate. His TrackWiz rating of 53.33 lags behind the top two, but that raw speed and win percentage suggest he's capable of hitting the board in the right trip. A pace-pressing style at five furlongs on turf could keep him in the picture late.
The three free races today span a nice cross-section of the card — a maiden claiming sprint to open things up in Race 1, a one-mile dirt claimer in Race 2, and a five-furlong turf sprint in Race 3. That's dirt and turf, short and route, which means our free picks aren't just a single-surface story.
Lucky Juan (5/2 morning line, TrackWiz rating 87.81) headlines Race 1 as the top-rated horse in the opener. Aryton (3/1) steps up in Race 2 at the mile, where pace scenario will be everything on a hot afternoon — horses with late energy have an edge when early fractions get honest in the heat. And in Race 3, Dreamrosa (9/5) is the short-priced favorite on the turf, posting our highest free-race rating at 88.83. She's the one to beat, though the price means you'll want to be sharp about how you structure your tickets.
