Emerald Downs Picks & Predictions — August 23, 2026
Sunday afternoon at Emerald Downs and conditions couldn't be much more cooperative — 73°F under partly cloudy skies, the kind of Pacific Northwest day that brings the crowd out and keeps the racing surface honest. Nine races are on the board, all on the main dirt track, spanning everything from maiden claimers to a sharp allowance test in the middle of the card.
The card leans heavily on the claiming ranks, which means we're doing a lot of class detective work today — tracking horses dropping in company, horses stepping up after a score, and everything in between. Three of those nine races are fully unlocked so every TrackWiz reader can dig in, and six premium races round out the full-card breakdown for subscribers.
A few of today's top picks are sitting at short morning lines — Chatty Leroybrown opened at 6/5 in Race 2 and Kristin Lee mirrors that number in Race 4 — so finding live value in the exotics is going to matter more than usual. Stay sharp.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Claiming · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt
A wide-open maiden claimer where all six horses carry a zero career win percentage, but TrackWiz ratings reveal a significant gap between the top two contenders and the rest of the field.
Glory Sunday (6) is the standout here, posting a TrackWiz rating of 87.81 — the highest in the field by a wide margin and nearly 28 points clear of the morning-line favorite. Jockey Blake Nunnally gets the call, and at 5/2 on the morning line there's genuine value for a horse that grades out this far ahead of the competition. In a maiden field where no one has broken their maiden, superior ratings carry extra weight, and Glory Sunday checks that box convincingly.
Shady Rambler (4) comes in as the 4/5 morning-line chalk, which tells you the public respects this one — but our rating of 60 puts it well behind Glory Sunday's 87.81. Adrian Castellanos handles the riding assignment, and Shady Rambler's speed figure of 54 matches Glory Sunday's, making a place finish a realistic outcome even if it can't quite top our top pick.
R D Stimulus (2) is the show-ticket value here at 10/1 morning line with a solid 40.06 TrackWiz rating — good for third in this field. Trainer Robert Baze is a respected name at this circuit, and at double-digit odds, tossing R D Stimulus into your exotics could pay handsomely if the pace scenario scrambles things late on this 6.5-furlong trip.
Race 2
Claiming · 1 mi · Dirt
The public is leaning on Chatty Leroybrown at 6/5, but Shanghai Barbie's rating is closer than the morning line suggests, making this a potential overlay situation for value players.
Chatty Leroybrown (6) tops our TrackWiz ratings at 83.41 and earns the nod as the top selection despite going off as the short-priced morning-line favorite at 6/5. Adrian Castellanos takes the mount, and the horse carries a 15% career win rate — respectable for this claiming level. At a mile on dirt, pace scenario is everything, and Chatty Leroybrown's profile suggests a horse capable of rating off the early pace and grinding past tiring rivals in the stretch.
Shanghai Barbie (1) is the sneaky value play here at 8/1 morning line, boasting a 79.79 TrackWiz rating that is remarkably close to the top pick's 83.41. Trainer Jose Puentes teams with Kevin Orozco, and a 13% career win rate in claiming company shows this mare (or gelding) has earned checks before. At eight times the chalk's price, Shanghai Barbie deserves a spot in your exacta and place bets.
Acclaimed Preacher (2) brings the best career win percentage in the field at 18% and draws the 2/1 morning line, so the public clearly hasn't overlooked this one. The 66.04 TrackWiz rating slots it cleanly as a third-best option, and trainer Marcelino Trujillo sends out a horse with enough experience to find the board at a mile.
Race 3
Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
Ms Flashy Harbor is the class of this six-furlong claiming field on ratings, but Can'tdealwithit's elite 33% career win rate makes this more than a one-horse show.
Ms Flashy Harbor (2) leads all comers with a 87.81 TrackWiz rating and posts an average speed figure of 56, matching the top trio in the field. Kevin Krigger aboard is an experienced hand, and trainer Steve Bullock places horses to win. The 5/2 morning line is fair for a horse this far ahead on our model, and six furlongs on dirt at Emerald Downs suits the speed-figure profile here.
Rabble (4) is the interesting play behind Ms Flashy Harbor, rating 77.78 on TrackWiz with a 13% career win percentage. What makes Rabble worth including in your exotics is the pace dimension — at 4/1 morning line, Adrian Castellanos can use early position and hope to steal a piece of this if Ms Flashy Harbor draws a wide trip. Trainer Jorge Rosales has been active at this meet, and this looks like a well-placed horse.
Creme de Menthe (1) brings the best career win percentage of any horse picking up a check here at 18%, and the 69.61 TrackWiz rating makes it a clear third choice. Trainer Frank Lucarelli and jockey Isaias Enriquez form a familiar combination, and the 7/2 morning line means show money on Creme de Menthe lands at a reasonable price for a deep exacta or trifecta anchor.
Our three free previews cover Races 1, 2, and 3, and they form a nice cross-section of what Emerald Downs looks like today. Glory Sunday kicks things off in a 6½-furlong maiden claimer — a surface and distance combo that tends to reward horses with early speed when the track is playing true, as it appears to be today. Ms Flashy Harbor in Race 3 drew the same TrackWiz rating as Glory Sunday, which is no coincidence — both profiles fit the same mold of class-appropriate horses in favorable pace scenarios.
Race 2 is the one to watch closely in the free tier. Chatty Leroybrown goes 1 mile on dirt as the morning-line favorite, and routing claimers at a mile at Emerald Downs can set up generously for closers if the front-runners get into a tussle. Keep that pace scenario in mind when you're building your tickets — even if Chatty Leroybrown wires the field, the exacta underneath could be where the money's made.
