Delta Downs Picks & Predictions — October 10, 2026
It's a beautiful Saturday at Delta Downs — clear skies, 84 degrees, and a fast dirt track that should play right into the hands of horses with early speed. Nine races are on the board today, and there's something for every type of bettor, from maiden sprints to a Stakes headliner that figures to be the talk of the card.
The feature is Race 8, a 7-furlong Stakes event where morning-line hammer Touchuponastar (3/5) carries the highest TrackWiz rating on the entire card at 88.76. But there's a full day of action to work through before we get there, including a couple of intriguing spots where the numbers are pointing to some real value.
We've got three races open to all readers and six more locked behind the premium curtain. Let's break it down.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Special Weight · 7 fur · Dirt
A wide-open maiden sprint where TrackWiz's model finds a massive gap at the top — one horse rates more than 25 points clear of the field, making this look like a potential single on the ticket.
Respected Mind is the clear standout here, posting a TrackWiz rating of 83.38 — more than 28 points above the second-ranked horse. She's shown an average speed figure of 54 in her work, and the morning line of 9/5 reflects the market's agreement that she's the one to beat. Trainer Chasey Deville Pomier puts her in against first-time starters and horses with limited experience, which is exactly the spot to land a confident debut runner. Jockey Devin H. Magnon gets the call, and the 7-furlong dirt route gives her plenty of ground to settle and unleash.
Just Destiny draws the 4-hole and comes in with the second-highest TrackWiz rating in the field at 55.83, which puts her solidly in the mix for the exacta. Trainer Jonathan Wong sends her out at 7/2 on the morning line, suggesting connections have legitimate confidence. With several first-timers in the field, any horse with a rating edge in the 50s looks attractive to fill the place slot.
Pound of Music at 5/1 checks in with a TrackWiz rating of 53.33 and an average speed figure of 54 — matching the top horse on that metric, which is worth noting in a maiden field. Trainer Shane Wilson and jockey Harry Hernandez form a familiar combination at this meet. At those morning line odds, she's a reasonable show bet and a piece of any trifecta structure.
Race 2
Starter Optional Claiming · 4 fur · Dirt
A short 4-furlong dash in starter optional claiming company where two closely rated horses sit atop the TrackWiz model and the morning line favorite doesn't match the top ratings — creating potential for a value exacta.
Pondicherry tops the TrackWiz ratings at 82.71 and jumps out as the speed threat with the best average speed figure in the field at 58. Trainer Mark N. Hibdon saddles her off a 19% career win rate, and with jockey David Cardoso in the irons, this duo knows how to get the job done at Delta Downs. At 6/1 on the morning line, she's being underestimated — our model says she's the best horse in this field.
Hurricane Lassie is the morning line favorite at 5/2 and carries a 42% career win rate — the highest in the field by a wide margin. A horse that wins four out of every ten starts doesn't need much to go right, and at 4 furlongs on the dirt, she's in a race built for front-runners. The 81.38 TrackWiz rating confirms she belongs at the top of the ticket.
Golden Beauty at 8/1 is an interesting show play, rated 71.58 by TrackWiz — third-best in the field. Her 25% career win rate is solid, and trainer Mark N. Hibdon also saddles the top pick, giving the barn two live chances in this race. In a short sprint, she could easily be sitting third at the wire and collecting a check.
Race 3
Maiden Special Weight · 5 fur · Dirt
A 12-horse maiden field at 5 furlongs where two horses dominate the TrackWiz ratings and nearly everyone else is a question mark — the top of the ticket looks clear, but sorting out the trifecta bottom is the puzzle.
Carlos the Kid sits atop the TrackWiz ratings at 85.68 in this large maiden field — a significant margin over most of the field. He's recorded an average speed figure of 53 in prior work, and trainer Chasey Deville Pomier has already shown sharp form on today's card. Javier Antonio Hernandez, who gets the mount, is a capable handler in these spots. The 7/2 morning line implies solid market support, and the TrackWiz model strongly agrees.
Countless at 6/1 rates just a hair below the top pick at 82.71 — these two are clearly separated from the rest of the field. She's also logged a 53 average speed figure, matching Carlos the Kid stride for stride on that metric. Trainer Shane Wilson, who also saddled Pound of Music in Race 1, appears to have a string of live horses today, and Harry Hernandez rides here.
Bold Echo in the rail post draws respect with a 57.50 TrackWiz rating and an average speed figure of 54 — the highest speed figure of any horse in this field. Trainer W. Bret Calhoun is one of the more accomplished conditioners on this circuit. While Bold Echo sits well behind the top two on overall ratings, that 54 speed figure gives her a legitimate shot to close out the trifecta and reward backers at 5/2.
The first three races give us a solid cross-section of what Delta Downs looks like on a warm October afternoon. In Race 1, Respected Mind (9/5 ML, rated 83.38) draws our top attention in a 7-furlong Maiden Special Weight — the longer maiden sprint distance on a fast, dry track should suit horses with a stamina edge. Race 2 flips the script with a short 4-furlong Starter Optional Claiming sprint, and that's where Pondicherry stands out as genuine value at 6/1 on the morning line despite posting the second-best TrackWiz rating among the free races (82.71). Pace will be everything over that short distance. Then in Race 3, Carlos the Kid carries our highest free-race rating at 85.68 and comes in at a very fair 7/2 in a 5-furlong Maiden Special Weight — that's the kind of number that gets our attention when the price still has some meat on the bone.
With the track playing fast under clear skies, keep an eye on horses breaking from favorable outside posts in the sprints — early position and clean trips should matter all day long.
