Delaware Park Picks & Predictions — October 16, 2026
It's a beautiful mid-October Friday at Delaware Park — partly cloudy skies, a comfortable 74°F, and conditions that should keep the main track playing fair all afternoon. Nine races on the dirt from top to bottom, ranging from maiden claimers to starter optional claiming bouts, and our TrackWiz models found some genuine angles worth your attention.
The card has a nice mix of short sprints and route races, which means different pace scenarios are in play throughout the day. That matters more than casual bettors might think — a track that's playing front-speed friendly in the sprints doesn't always translate the same way going a mile. We'll break that down as the races unfold.
Three races are open to everyone today, and our free picks include a morning-line favorite, a mid-price value play, and a route race that sets up as a potential pace meltdown. Plenty to dig into.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
A wide-open maiden claimer where TrackWiz ratings reveal a clear top two but a competitive middle tier that could scramble the exotics — the 6-furlong dirt strip will sort out who actually belongs.
Uniqueness lands at the top of our TrackWiz ratings with an 85.62 — a healthy gap above the rest of the field — and draws the 8-post with Martin Chuan, who knows how to position a horse in a sprint. Trainer Jamie Ness has a strong reputation for placing maiden runners where they can fire, and the 4/1 morning line is an inviting price if the horse shows up with its best effort. The avg speed figure of 53 is solid for this maiden claiming level, and that combination of rating, connections, and price makes this our top selection.
Rosebank Red draws the rail favorite attention at 2/1 on the morning line and carries the second-highest TrackWiz rating in the field at 66.9 — a legitimate threat to light up the board. Paco Lopez is one of the sharper pilots in the mid-Atlantic circuit and knows how to get position from a comfortable outside draw. At even-money range to place, the value is modest, but the number supports it.
Judge Caprio opens at 6/1 and checks in with a 59.92 TrackWiz rating — good enough to earn a spot in your exotics at a price. Edgar Villasmil gets the call for Pedro Nazario, and this barn also enters Cecilton today, suggesting they're live in this race. The 6/1 morning line offers overlay potential for show bettors and exacta/trifecta builders.
Race 2
Starter Optional Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
Canuto looks like the class of this Starter Optional Claiming field and figures to be a short price — the real question is whether Develop Product or Cyberbeast can apply enough pressure to make it interesting.
Canuto tops the TrackWiz ratings at a flat 90 and opens as the morning line favorite at even money — and the number backs up the price. A 28% career win rate is elite at this level, and Paco Lopez aboard is a massive plus in a short-field six-furlong sprint where positioning off the gate matters. Trainer Pompeyo Gomez has this horse spotted well, and if Canuto breaks cleanly, he's hard to beat.
Develop Product carries an 81.54 TrackWiz rating and a 14% career win rate, which is respectable in this company. Julio A. Hernandez pilots for Andrew L. Simoff, a trainer who fires at a consistent clip at Delaware, and the 3/1 morning line suggests the market agrees this is a legitimate contender. A place wager here offers solid security in what shapes up as a top-heavy race.
Cyberbeast is the most accomplished winner in the field by percentage — 22% career win rate — and Jose A. Batista picks up the mount for trainer Greg Compton. The 80.85 TrackWiz rating is essentially on par with Develop Product, and at 3/1 on the morning line, there's genuine value in including Cyberbeast in your show and exacta spots.
Race 3
Claiming · 1 mi · Dirt
Heavenly Tactic enters as the top-rated horse but faces a strong pace scenario challenge from Warriors Jewel and Pippa's Noncents, setting up a potential front-runner's duel over a one-mile dirt route.
Heavenly Tactic leads all horses with an 86.35 TrackWiz rating and boasts a 28% career win rate — a figure that stands out in a claiming mile where most runners hover in the single digits. Trainer McLean Robertson puts Jatniel Ramos in the saddle, and the 7/2 morning line gives you genuine value on the top-rated horse in the field. At a mile on dirt, consistency matters, and Heavenly Tactic's profile screams it.
Warriors Jewel rates second on our TrackWiz model at 81.52 and gets Edgar Villasmil aboard — a capable pilot who can rate a closer over the mile trip. The 3/1 morning line is fair, and while the 6% career win rate is modest, the rating suggests this horse may be breaking through soon. Including Warriors Jewel in your place and exacta coverage makes sense.
Pippa's Noncents opens as the shortest price in the field at 3/2 and owns a 25% career win rate, which demands respect. The 78.6 TrackWiz rating is third in the field, and Melvis Gonzalez pilots for Michael V. Simone — a barn that runs horses ready to hit the board. At the short price, Pippa's Noncents may not offer much win value but is a near-lock for the show pool in your exotics.
Our three free races today — Races 1, 2, and 3 — give you a solid early-card foundation. Uniqueness opens the day in the maiden claiming sprint at 4/1 on the morning line, rated 85.62 by our models, and looks well-placed for a maiden runner breaking her way into the winner's circle. In Race 2, Canuto is the even-money choice in the starter optional claiming sprint — that EVN morning line tells you the public already respects this one, and our 90.00 rating backs it up as the top-rated free pick of the day. Don't fade the chalk just because it's short.
Race 3 stretches things out to a mile on the dirt, and Heavenly Tactic at 7/2 is the pick we like in that claiming route. A one-turn mile at Delaware can expose horses who aren't genuine route types, and our pace projections suggest the setup could favor a closer here — something to watch when the gates open. These three free races tell a consistent story: the dirt is playing honest today, and horses with solid recent form figures are holding their edge.
