Colonial Downs is serving up a full 9-race Sunday card on August 2nd, and the weather is about as cooperative as you could ask for — partly cloudy skies, 85°F, and no rain in sight. This is a card that rewards patience. Maiden claiming turf sprints can be unpredictable, but Cuddler's profile makes her the clear best bet in Race 1.
Louvar sits second in our ratings at 59.98 and draws a 3/1 morning line that reflects a legitimate second option. Taylor Kingsley is aboard for trainer Barry Foley, and with an avg speed figure of 55 matching several rivals, the horse should be competitive in the pace scenario. A solid piece of the exacta underneath the favorite.
Regal Flair comes in third on our board at 53.41 with a 4/1 morning line, representing decent value in a race where the spots behind Cuddler are genuinely contested. Jose E. Vargas has the mount, and in exotics this horse is worth including — especially in trifecta and superfecta combinations looking for a live outside number.
Race 2
Claiming · 1 1/16 mi · Dirt
The top two in the TrackWiz ratings are nearly 20 points apart from the rest of the field, but neither one sits at the top of the morning line — creating a pace scenario that should favor closers around two turns on the dirt.
River City Runner is our top-rated horse at 84.9 despite posting a 9/2 morning line — that gap between public perception and our model is exactly the kind of value spot we look for. Trainer Michael J. Trombetta is a sharp conditioner and Mychel J. Sanchez picks up the mount. A 16% career win rate is solid for a claiming horse, and the 1 1/16-mile dirt route should suit a horse with a measured pace profile.
Master Schemer rates second at 79.38 and is the 5/2 morning line choice, making this the race's public favorite. Horacio Karamanos rides for Somraj Singh, and the 9% career win rate is modest, but the rating model sees more here than the connections' raw record might suggest. If River City Runner is coming from off the pace, Master Schemer could set the table and still hold on for the place.
Night of Magic slots in third on our board at 62.67 with an 11% career win rate and a 3/1 morning line. Luis Fuenmayor gets the call for trainer Monica McGoey, and the 54 avg speed figure is competitive with the top contenders. In a three-horse race on paper, Night of Magic rounds out the exacta and trifecta naturally.
Race 3
Starter Allowance · 1 mi · Turf
Three horses are separated by fewer than two rating points at the top of this starter allowance turf mile, setting up a genuine three-way battle — but there's a compelling pace and class angle that nudges one slightly ahead of the others.
Patrick's Promise earns the top rating in our model at 87.19 and opens at 5/2 on the morning line. Horacio Karamanos joins up with trainer Michael J. Trombetta, a combination that's been productive at this meet. A 17% career win rate is strong for an allowance turf route, and the 54 avg speed figure is right in the mix. When our ratings and the public line are aligned this closely, it reinforces the play.
La Houligan is the morning line favorite at 9/5 and rates just 0.86 points behind the top pick at 86.33, so this is essentially a dead heat at the top. Mychel J. Sanchez rides for Greg Compton, and a 14% career win rate shows consistency. The slight discount in our model to second makes La Houligan the ideal place play — likely to hit the board even if she can't quite get to the front.
Don't sleep on Longhi at 4/1 — a 37% career win rate is remarkable and stands out immediately in this field. Jorge Ruiz rides for W. Robert Bailes, and the 55 avg speed figure gives Longhi a slight edge over the top two. The 4/1 morning line may actually undervalue the win potential here, so this horse is a legitimate contender in exotics and a strong show anchor.
