Friday night racing at Charles Town doesn't get much crisper than this — clear skies, 57°F, and a fast dirt surface primed for quick times. Eight races are on the board tonight, and from top to bottom this card has some genuine intrigue packed into it.
The short sprints dominate the card, with four races going at 4 1/2 furlongs — a distance that rewards horses who can fire out of the gate and hold their advantage around this tight West Virginia oval. But we've also got a route, a pair of mid-distance sprints, and a 1 1/16-mile allowance that should sort out some legitimate class contenders. Plenty to work with.
Our TrackWiz ratings have identified strong top picks across all eight races, including a couple of morning-line favorites we think are priced just right and at least one spot where the morning line may be leaving money on the table for sharp bettors.
Best Bets
Race 1
Starter Optional Claiming · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt
A clear class standout looms over this Starter Optional Claiming sprint, but there's legitimate depth in the middle of the field that could make the exotics interesting.
Sisyphus opens as the 6/5 morning-line favorite for a reason — a TrackWiz rating of 89.71 towers over this field by nearly 20 points. With a 23% career win rate, this horse converts at a level most here can't match. Trainer Adam King and jockey Reshawn Latchman combine for a formidable pairing in this 6½-furlong dirt sprint, and at the 6/5 price, you're essentially paying for a strong performance. The pace scenario sets up nicely: there's speed in the field but nothing likely to overwhelm Sisyphus if Latchman gets a clean trip away from the gate.
Dance for Green (5/2 ML) is the clear second-best horse by our ratings at 70.13, and a 21% career win rate backs that up with real substance. Jeiron Barbosa has been aboard live horses throughout the meet, and trainer David Walters spots this one well at 6½ furlongs on dirt. If Sisyphus hits any trouble, Dance for Green has the rating and the win percentage to capitalize.
It's Sizzling Time at 7/2 brings a 16% career win rate and a TrackWiz rating of 53.41 — good enough to factor in a race where the bottom half of the field rates well below this level. Trainer Ronney W. Brown keeps horses competitive at Charles Town, and Moises Santaella is a reliable hand in the irons. As a show play or for underneath slots in exacta and trifecta tickets, this one is a solid anchor.
