Charles Town Picks & Predictions — October 3, 2026
Saturday night at Charles Town and the conditions are about as good as you'll get this time of year — partly cloudy skies, a comfortable 63°F, and a fast dirt surface primed for some honest pace scenarios. Eight races on the card tonight, all on the dirt, ranging from short 4 1/2-furlong sprints to the slightly longer 7-furlong routes. It's a well-rounded night of racing that gives bettors plenty of angles to work.
The card leans heavily toward the sprint distances in the early going, which sets the table nicely for pace horses and quicker closers. As we stretch into the later races, the extra ground introduces a new set of questions — and opportunities. TrackWiz analysis has identified some compelling plays across all race types tonight, including a couple of longshot angles worth a close look.
Best Bets
Race 1
Claiming · 4 1/2 fur · Dirt
A short 4 1/2 furlong claiming sprint where one horse towers above the field on the ratings — but two mid-priced contenders could make the exotics interesting.
King Uni (7) is the clear class of this field with a TrackWiz rating of 89.12 — nearly 22 points clear of the next-best horse. Nomar Arroyo Bueno gets the call, and at a 9% career win rate this horse knows how to finish the job. The 8/5 morning line makes him a short-priced favorite, but that rating advantage is hard to argue with in a claiming field like this. He's our top selection and the anchor for any exotics.
Thor's Lad (6) checks in with a 66.97 TrackWiz rating — second-best in the field — and comes in at a juicy 5/1 morning line that offers real place-pool value. Trainer Elaine Soldo sends him out with Denis Vicente Araujo up, and at this short sprint distance, he has the profile to fire fresh. If King Uni dominates up front, Thor's Lad looks like the most likely to fill the exacta.
Intention to Zip (3) rates out at 63.60, third in the field, and Joseph Stehr has this horse pointing for this spot. At 6/1 on the morning line, there's genuine value to including her in your trifecta tickets. With the top two horses clearly rated above the rest, Intention to Zip projects as the logical show-position finisher in a race that could sort itself out fairly cleanly.
Race 2
Maiden Special Weight · 4 1/2 fur · Dirt
Wide-open maiden sprint where most of the field has no published speed figures — this one could go any direction, making the horses who've already shown a number stand out.
Sawyer's Song (6) is our top-rated horse in this maiden field at 66.39 and has already posted an avg speed figure of 53 — one of the better numbers in the race. Trainer Jaime Cruz puts J.D. Acosta aboard, a solid booking for a morning-line 5/1 shot in what is otherwise a muddy form field. The combination of a published speed figure and a top-tier rating in a field full of unknowns gives Sawyer's Song a meaningful edge here.
Z Town (2) also carries an avg speed of 53 and rates at 57.50, making him one of two horses in the field with actual timed works or race figures to point to. Anthony Farrior trains this one, and a 5/2 morning line suggests the market agrees with the form edge. If Sawyer's Song gets loose on the lead, Z Town has the profile to chase him down or at least earn the place spot.
One Funny Dude (5) rates at 55.00 and is second on Farrior's two-horse entry, which is a notable angle — that barn clearly likes what they have in this race. At 4/1, he won't offer huge overlay value, but he brings stable confidence into a field full of unknowns. Trifecta players should consider using him as a show backup behind the top two rated horses.
Race 3
Allowance · 4 1/2 fur · Dirt
This allowance sprint features a dominant favorite backed by a powerhouse rating, but two other quality runners make the pace scenario worth watching closely.
Priority One (6) comes in as our top-rated horse with an 89.42 TrackWiz score — the highest rating of any horse on tonight's card through the first three races. A 33% career win rate is elite for a Charles Town allowance runner, and trainer Anthony Farrior puts up Jeiron Barbosa, a sharp pilot for this short sprint. At 7/5 on the morning line, she'll be heavily backed, and the numbers back up why.
No Direction (5) is a sneaky interesting play here — a 37% career win rate is actually the highest in this field, and the 69.96 TrackWiz rating makes her a legitimate contender. Carlos Eduardo Lopez handles the riding duties for trainer Angelo G. Jackson, a familiar pairing at this track. At 7/2, if Priority One has a troubled trip or tires late, No Direction is well-positioned to pick up the pieces.
Ain't No Angel (3) boasts the same 33% career win rate as the favorite and an avg speed figure of 53, matching the top horses in this race on pure numbers. Trainer Timothy Grams runs two horses in this race and this one draws the 9/5 second-choice morning line slot, which signals real market confidence. Include her underneath in your trifectas — she's the most likely beneficiary if the top two knock each other around.
Three races are open to all TrackWiz readers tonight, and they cover a nice cross-section of the card. King Uni in Race 1 is our morning-line favorite in the opening claimer at 8/5, and the TrackWiz rating of 89.12 backs up that confidence — this horse looks like a cut above in a soft spot. Over in Race 3, Priority One posts our highest free-race rating of the night at 89.42 in an Allowance sprint, drawing the favorite's tab at 7/5 for good reason. Then there's Sawyer's Song in the Race 2 maiden, a 5/1 shot on the morning line that represents the best value angle among our free picks — maiden races are inherently unpredictable, but the TrackWiz model sees enough upside here to make this one worth your attention.
The early races all come in at 4 1/2 furlongs, so expect sharp, gate-to-wire pace scenarios. On a track like Charles Town, early speed is always a factor — watch the break and the first turn closely in each of these sprints.
