Charles Town Picks & Predictions — October 2, 2026
Charles Town fires up an 8-race all-dirt card on Friday evening, and the conditions are about as cooperative as you'll get this time of year — cloudy skies, 75°F, and no rain in the picture to complicate the surface. That's good news for speed horses, and Charles Town's tight bullring already rewards front-runners like few tracks in the Mid-Atlantic.
Tonight's card runs the full spectrum: a pair of Maiden Special Weights bookend the evening, there's claiming action sprinkled throughout, and a lone Allowance spot in Race 7 gives the classier horses a chance to shine. Short sprints dominate — four of the eight races go 4 1/2 furlongs, so early pace and gate speed are going to matter all night long.
TrackWiz has full analysis on all 8 races. The first three are on the house — dig into those free picks below, then unlock the complete card to stay sharp through the nightcap.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Special Weight · 4 1/2 fur · Dirt
A maiden sprint that's essentially a clean slate — no winners in the field and limited speed figures to lean on, making TrackWiz ratings the clearest edge in a wide-open opener.
Old Man's Dream tops our TrackWiz ratings at 57.5 and draws a strong connection with trainer Anthony Farrior, who also saddles stablemate Mantrip. The morning line of 5/2 reflects public respect, and with an avg speed figure of 54 — tied for best among horses with recorded figures — this one has the raw material to control the pace over 4.5 furlongs. Jeiron Barbosa gets the call and should have this horse positioned right where he needs to be on a short Charles Town dirt sprint.
Hijinxnoel rates second in the field at 56.67 and gets Denis Vicente Araujo in the irons at a morning line of 3/1. No speed figure is available for this one, but the TrackWiz rating is rock-solid in a field where most horses are unproven, making a place finish a very realistic outcome. In maiden races with thin form, high-rated unknowns often deliver.
Cash Or Credit at 6/1 offers real value in the exotics at a 51.67 rating — third-best in the field. Trainer Kevin Boykins puts Victor Rodriguez up, and while this runner lacks a recorded avg speed, the morning line underdog price makes the show slot a worthy target for those building trifecta tickets.
Race 2
Claiming · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt
A claiming sprint with a standout — Connect the Dots has a monster TrackWiz rating in a field where the gap between the top horses and the bottom is unusually wide.
Connect the Dots is the most dominant-rated horse we've seen today, clocking in at 87.08 — a full 12 points clear of the next rival, Paint the Alley. A career win rate of 28% is excellent for the claiming ranks, and an avg speed of 54 shows genuine ability over 6.5 furlongs of Charles Town dirt. Trainer Anthony Farrior and jockey Jeiron Barbosa is a sharp barn-rider combo, and at 3/1 on the morning line, this is a confident top selection.
Paint the Alley checks in at 75.15 on our ratings with an impressive career win rate of 25% — one of the stronger win percentages in the field. Denis Vicente Araujo has the mount at 9/2, and with a consistent avg speed of 52, this mare figures to be running at the wire and should be a solid place horse against Connect the Dots.
John's Notion at 7/2 brings a 58.6 rating and a 13% career win rate, which is respectable in this class. Reshawn Latchman pilots for trainer Kristy Petty, and the 52 avg speed keeps this runner in the mix at 6.5 furlongs. In a race where the top two may battle hard, John's Notion could be picking up the pieces late.
Race 3
Claiming · 4 1/2 fur · Dirt
Despite a short field of claimers going 4.5 furlongs, the top three by TrackWiz rating are tightly bunched and the morning line actually undervalues our top pick — expect pace pressure throughout.
Speedy Bubbles is our top-rated horse in this race at 84.9 despite drawing a 9/2 morning line — that's a value disconnect worth noting. A career win rate of 14% is solid for the claiming ranks, and while no avg speed is recorded, the TrackWiz model clearly sees something that the morning line hasn't fully priced in. Trainer Vanessa Peltroche sends out Maximo Chilo, and the short 4.5-furlong trip at Charles Town should suit a horse rated this high.
Arditamente rates 76.03 and gets a 7/2 ticket from the morning line with Sunday Diaz, Jr. up for trainer Tyler S. Shanley. No avg speed on file, but the rating puts this one firmly in contention, and Shanley is a name that shows up throughout this card — a trainer with multiple runners typically has a good feel for the track condition. A place seems well within reach.
Ran the Red is the morning line favorite at 9/5 but slots into our show position at 73.34 — third-best in the field. A 16% career win rate and avg speed of 53 make this a legitimate contender, and Nomar Arroyo Bueno is a capable jockey to have aboard. This one could easily beat our top pick if the pace sets up right, so including in exacta and trifecta tickets is a must.
The opening three races set the tone nicely. Race 1 is a Maiden Special Weight sprint where Old Man's Dream (5/2 morning line) earns our top mark at 57.5 — modest by the numbers but worth watching on a short 4 1/2-furlong layout where early speed can paper over experience gaps. In Race 2, Connect the Dots posts one of the stronger ratings on the entire card at 87.08 going 6 1/2 furlongs in a Claiming field — that combination of ability and class level is exactly the spot TrackWiz targets. Race 3 keeps things short again at 4 1/2 furlongs, and Speedy Bubbles (9/2) carries an 84.9 rating into a Claiming sprint that looks very winnable.
The thread connecting these free picks is simple: all three are sprinters on a track that heavily favors horses who can clear the pack early and dictate terms through Charles Town's short stretch. If the early pace heats up in any of these races, watch for horses with closing kick — but tonight's bias likely rewards the front end.
