Century Downs Picks & Predictions — October 23, 2026
It's a brisk Friday at Century Downs — clear skies overhead but a sharp 38°F bite in the air as post time approaches. That kind of cold can firm up a dirt surface fast, so pay attention to early speed today. Horses that can get to the front without burning too much energy early could have a significant edge, especially going shorter.
We've got a full 8-race card on the dirt, ranging from maiden claimers to an Allowance Optional Claiming feature, with distances stretching from a quick 6 furlongs all the way out to a route at 1 1/16 miles. There's something for every kind of bettor here — straightforward win bets, pace puzzles, and at least one spot that screams multi-race sequence.
Three races are open to all TrackWiz readers today, and they happen to include some of the card's most compelling storylines. The premium card goes five races deep with pace projections, exotic ticket structures, and our full ratings on every contender.
Best Bets
Race 1
Claiming · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt
One horse stands well clear on the TrackWiz ratings in this 6½-furlong claiming opener, but a pair of live pace threats could make the early going interesting.
Samarolu earns an 87.08 TrackWiz rating — more than 25 points clear of the next-best horse in this field — and that kind of separation in a claiming race doesn't come around often. A 20% career win rate is solid in this company, and jockey Enrique Alonzo Gonzalez gets the call for trainer Mark Cloutier. At 3/1 on the morning line, this is a legitimate best bet, not just a false favorite.
Jackpot Bar brings the best career win percentage in the field at 23%, which tells you this horse knows how to close things out when conditions set up right. The 7/2 morning line offers fair value for a horse with a 61.26 rating to fill the exacta underneath Samarolu. Trainer Carson Frey keeps things simple and Keihton Natera can work with whatever pace scenario develops.
Undeniable Jill owns a 25% career win rate — tops in the field among horses near the top of the ratings — and that consistency is exactly what you want in your show slot. At 5/2, she's likely to be bet down further, but her presence in exacta and trifecta keys is justified. Trainer Craig Robert Smith runs a reliable barn and Amadeo Perez is a capable hand in the irons.
Race 2
Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
February looks like the class of this 6-furlong claiming field, but B B's Wildfire's eye-catching win percentage sets up an intriguing exacta battle at the top.
February tops the TrackWiz ratings at 88.54 — the highest mark in the field by a comfortable margin — and Kimal Santo has the horse ready to fire from post 4. A 22% career win rate is consistent, and matching that with the top speed figure in the race at an average of 53 makes this a well-rounded profile. The 2/1 morning line is short but fair given the edge our analysis shows.
B B's Wildfire is the one to watch underneath. A 31% career win rate is the best in this entire field by a wide margin, and that kind of hit rate demands respect regardless of the odds. Kemar Richard Chase takes the mount for trainer Ron Grieves, and the 9/2 morning line represents genuine value for a horse that wins nearly a third of the time. Loop her into your exactas.
Licorice checks in at a 65.96 TrackWiz rating, good for third in the field, and gets the experienced Antonio Ambrosio Reyes up from trainer James R. Brown. The 3/1 morning line suggests the market already respects this one, and she's a logical show ticket and trifecta component behind the top two. A 11% career win rate is modest, but this race is about hitting the board.
Race 3
Maiden Claiming · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt
A maiden claiming sprint where the top two on the TrackWiz sheet are neck-and-neck in ratings — this trifecta box could pay nicely if the heavy favorite stumbles.
Kodiak Ron enters as a 4/5 morning-line favorite and backs it up with a 90.00 TrackWiz rating — a perfect score that stands alone at the top of this maiden field. Trainer Todd Kettleson sends him out with Kimal Santo in the irons, a capable combination in a short field. In maiden claiming company, a horse this far clear on the ratings deserves strong respect, and at even money you're paying for certainty.
Due Coarse is the main threat to the favorite with an 82.49 TrackWiz rating, just a hair below Kodiak Ron. Keihton Natera picks up the mount for trainer Craig Robert Smith, a barn that places horses competitively. At 4/1, there's real value here if anything goes sideways for the morning-line chalk — this horse should not leave your exacta tickets.
Penicillium slots in at 80.48 on the TrackWiz scale, making this a legitimately tight three-horse grouping at the top. Trainer Lorne Webb sends out Orlando Foster, and at 7/2 this one could easily be bet into co-favorite territory. In a maiden race where any horse can show unexpected improvement, having Penicillium in your trifectas is good insurance.
The free portion of today's card gives you a solid foundation to work from. Samarolu opens the day in Race 1 at 3/1 on the morning line — a fair price if the pace sets up right over 6½ furlongs. In Race 2, February comes in as the public choice at 2/1, and our rating of 88.54 backs the chalk here. Then there's Race 3, where Kodiak Ron is an overwhelming 4/5 morning line favorite in the maiden claimer — our top score of 90.00 on the free card makes this one of the clearest opinions of the day.
With the cold temps tightening up the track, all three free races are sprints or near-sprints, which plays right into the pace-favoring surface we expect. Early speed with tactical ability is the theme — horses that settle just off a contested pace could be the real winners in this weather.
