Canterbury Park Picks & Predictions — September 6, 2026
Happy Sunday at Canterbury Park. Seven races are on the board for Labor Day weekend's closing act, and the weather is cooperating — partly cloudy skies and a comfortable 82°F means the turf course should be in excellent shape after what's been a solid late-season run for the Canterbury lawn.
Three of today's seven races go on the turf, and that surface bias is going to drive a lot of the value conversation. We've also got a mix of maiden specials, allowances, and claiming races that give you plenty of angles to work — whether you're here for the win bets or building multi-race exotics. Short fields and soft morning lines in a couple of spots could open the door for some overlooked prices.

A wide-open maiden turf mile with all first-time or winless runners — TrackWiz ratings separate the contenders from the pretenders, and there's a clear top selection despite the competitive morning line.
Rumpus in Paradise draws the top TrackWiz rating in the field at 88.54 — a significant gap over the second-ranked horse — and that kind of separation in a maiden field typically means something. Luis A. Fuentes gets the call for trainer Ruben Fuentes, keeping this one in the barn's hands, which can be a positive sign when connections like what they see at home. With an avg speed figure of 54 on turf and the morning line sitting at 2/1, the public already respects this one, and our analysis agrees. In a race full of unknowns, you go with the highest-rated horse and let it run.
Lady Ridge Street is the second-highest-rated horse in the field at 75.38 and posts the field's top average speed figure of 55 — that one-point edge may sound minor, but in a short-priced maiden turf sprint that can translate to real separation. Constantino Roman is a capable pilot and trainer Esteban Martinez has her ready at 7/2 on the morning line. She's a logical place anchor in your exacta and trifecta tickets.
The Other One lands in the show spot at 3/1 on the morning line, carrying a TrackWiz rating of 60.85 — third-best in the field. Trainer Nik G. Goodwin and jockey Betty Jo Williams form a familiar partnership, and at a mile on the turf, a horse with a 54 avg speed figure should be competitive enough to hit the board even if the top two live up to expectations. A good trifecta anchor at a reasonable price.
Race 2
Allowance · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
A short four-horse allowance sprint on dirt where the TrackWiz ratings tell a clear story — one horse grades out well above the rest, but the morning line has the race looking like a contested pace between the two favorites.
Island Bender dominates this small field with a TrackWiz rating of 89.12 — the highest mark by more than 18 points over the next runner. Trainer Joel Berndt sends Constantino Roman to the irons, and with a 23% career win rate, this horse has already proven it can get to the winner's circle. The avg speed figure of 54 matches the top end of the field, and at 8/5 on the morning line, the public has already made it the favorite. Short price, but a short field — this is a confident play.
I C Gold is easy to overlook at 4/1 when Island Bender gets all the buzz, but a 71.16 TrackWiz rating and a 27% career win rate make this horse a legitimate threat to hit the board. Kelsi Harr pilots for trainer McLean Robertson, who also saddles the morning-line favorite Caughtyoulooking — Robertson clearly has two live runners in this spot. The value edge at 4/1 makes I C Gold an attractive place play in exactas.
Caughtyoulooking carries the second-best morning line in the field at 9/5 and an eye-catching 50% career win rate — that's a remarkable number and signals a horse that knows how to compete. The TrackWiz rating of 58.67 puts it behind the top two, but a horse winning half its races doesn't end up in the exotics by accident. Trainer McLean Robertson doubles up with I C Gold, and having two horses in a four-horse field is a tactical advantage worth noting.
Race 3
Maiden Special Weight · 5 fur · Turf
Eight maidens go five furlongs on the turf in a race that's genuinely wide open — most of the field is debuting or lightly raced, and the TrackWiz ratings are tightly bunched, setting up a potential longshot upset.
Avos Rose earns the top TrackWiz rating in the field at 63.50 despite going off at 10/1 on the morning line — that's the kind of gap between our analysis and the oddsmaker that we love to highlight. Trained by Nik G. Goodwin with Alonso Quinonez aboard, this runner has an avg speed figure of 52 on the board, giving her some measurable form to work with in a field where several horses have no speed figure at all. At double-digit odds, even a small win wager pays handsomely if she fires. This is our top longshot value play of the early card.
Golden Stride lands as the place pick with a 56.67 TrackWiz rating and the backing of jockey Jermaine V. Bridgmohan for trainer Patrick Fields — a professional combination in a maiden field full of question marks. The 3/1 morning line suggests market respect, and while no avg speed figure is on file, the TrackWiz model still grades her second in the field. A logical place bet and a key exotics inclusion.
Tactical Gamble at 4/1 rates third in our model at 55.00 and gives trainer Stacey Rushton a live runner on the five-furlong turf. No avg speed figure is on record, making this a bit of a projection play, but in maiden sprints on grass, first-time turf types can fire big — and the name alone tells you connections are swinging for something. Solid show ticket in what shapes up as a wide-open affair.
The free portion of today's card covers three very different looks. Race 1 kicks things off on the turf at a mile — a classic maiden special weight where Rumpus in Paradise tops our ratings at 88.54 and fits the pace scenario nicely at 2/1 on the morning line. Race 2 flips to dirt for a 5½-furlong allowance sprint, and Island Bender comes in as our highest-rated pick of the free races at 89.12 — that kind of number at 8/5 doesn't leave a ton of value, but the underlying form makes the price understandable. Then Race 3 takes us back to the turf for a five-furlong maiden, where Avos Rose catches the eye as a double-digit morning line price with a 63.5 TrackWiz rating — lower confidence, but that's exactly the kind of race where a longshot can sneak through if the pace sets up right.
The turf condition is the thread connecting Races 1 and 3 today — warm temperatures and no rain in the forecast means the going should be consistent throughout the card, which helps horses with turf form translate cleanly. Keep that in mind when you're handicapping.
