Albuquerque Picks & Predictions — October 18, 2026
Sunday at Albuquerque is shaping up to be a sharp, clean afternoon of racing. We've got a 9-race card stretching across both traditional distances and the lightning-quick quarter-horse sprints that make this track one of the more unique stops on the circuit — and with clear skies and a crisp 62°F at post time, expect a fast, true-running dirt surface with no weather excuses.
The card opens with a trio of Starter Optional Claiming and Claiming sprints before transitioning into Allowance company and, ultimately, the headline events: a Derby and a Futurity at 400 yards — pure power, pure speed. If you've never watched elite quarter horses run 400 yards, buckle up. We're talking about sub-20-second races where the break out of the gate is everything.
TrackWiz has full ratings on all nine races, with three races available free today and six locked behind our premium analysis. Let's set the table.
Best Bets
Race 1
Starter Optional Claiming · 5 fur · Dirt
A loaded top half with three horses rated within a whisker of each other sets up a competitive five-furlong sprint, but one runner separates from the pack on the numbers.
Plane Talk (4) is the class standout of this field by a wide margin, posting a TrackWiz rating of 87.81 — nearly 18 points clear of the next-best horse. That edge doesn't happen by accident in a Starter Optional Claiming field. With a 29% career win rate and an average speed figure of 56, Oscar Andrade Jr. gets a live chance at 5/2 on the morning line, which looks like fair value given how much separation there is in the ratings. Expect this one to be a factor early and tough to catch late over five furlongs.
Braybray (1) draws the rail and brings a 27% career win rate — the second-best in the field — making her a legitimate threat to hit the board. The TrackWiz rating of 69.36 is comfortably in the top three, and jockey Gabriel Medrano should be comfortable working out a trip from the inside post. At 9/2, there's solid place value here.
Mucho Gifted (3) is virtually a coin flip with Braybray on our ratings (69.3 vs. 69.36), which tells you this race has a clear top three and some separation after that. Trainer Trevor Rushton puts Erick Medellin up, and a 23% career win rate keeps this horse competitive in the exotics. At 4/1, Mucho Gifted is a reasonable show anchor for tickets.
Race 2
Claiming · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt
Channel Launch enters as a heavy class standout in a six-and-a-half furlong claiming field, but Wild Steel's rating makes this more than a one-horse race — watch for a pace battle that could set things up for closers.
Channel Launch (2) carries the top TrackWiz rating in the field at 87.81 and pairs that with a solid average speed figure of 55. Trainer Todd W. Fincher puts Oscar Andrade Jr. in the irons — a sharp combination that should navigate the extra distance well. At 5/2 on the morning line, Channel Launch is the play here, though a 15% career win rate is a mild caution flag if the pace heats up early.
Wild Steel (3) is the real threat to Channel Launch, coming in with a 78.78 rating that's comfortably clear of the rest of the field. Trainer Andres Gonzalez keeps the horse sharp, and Miguel A. Perez is a capable hand over the ground. The 7/2 morning line is where the place value is in this race.
Go Water (4) is priced at 8/1 but carries a 65.98 TrackWiz rating that puts her third in this field — well ahead of the back half. A 7% career win rate is modest, but in a field where the top two could burn each other up on the front end, Luis A. Valenzuela could guide Go Water to a piece at a generous price. Worth including in exacta and trifecta coverage.
Race 3
Starter Optional Claiming · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
Beautiful Breeze stands out as a genuine class edge in this Starter Optional Claiming field at five and a half furlongs, but the second half of the board is surprisingly open with five horses bunched between 54 and 65 on the ratings.
Beautiful Breeze (2) sits atop this field with an 86.35 TrackWiz rating — more than 22 points ahead of the third-ranked horse — and backs it up with a 20% career win rate. Trainer Ryan Kenney puts Olivia Bethke up, and the 7/2 morning line is a touch generous given how clear Beautiful Breeze is on the numbers. The average speed figure of 55 is competitive for this level, and five and a half furlongs on dirt looks like a comfortable fit.
Whimsical Heir (8) brings a 64.92 rating and a 21% career win rate, making him the second-best horse on our ratings despite a morning line of only 5/2 — oddly short given the gap to the top. Christian Ramos is a solid booking, and trainer Martin Manuel Valdez-Cabral has this horse ready to fire. The best play is pairing Whimsical Heir with Beautiful Breeze in the exacta.
Dream Trap (7) is listed at 8/1 on the morning line, but a 27% career win rate — tops in this field — is worth a second look. Trainer Rick E. Scudder and jockey Cerapio Figueroa are a familiar team, and while the TrackWiz rating of 61.63 puts Dream Trap third here, there's enough upside to include in exotic tickets, especially at that price.
Our three free races today — Races 1, 2, and 3 — give you a solid foundation to start the card. Plane Talk opens the day at 5/2 on the morning line in a 5-furlong Starter Optional Claimer, earning an 87.81 TrackWiz rating, one of the top marks on the entire card. Over in Race 2, Channel Launch matches that 87.81 figure in a 6.5-furlong Claiming sprint — the added distance gives pace scenario a bigger role here, and our analysis factors in how that plays out. Race 3 shifts to 5.5 furlongs of Starter Optional Claiming, where Beautiful Breeze shows up at 7/2 with an 86.35 rating and looks like one of the cleaner pace setups of the afternoon.
On a fast, dry Albuquerque dirt track like we're expecting today, early speed tends to hold up well in the shorter sprints — keep that bias in mind as you handicap these first three. All three of our free top picks figure to be near the front of the field from the jump, which matters.
