Rain is falling at Woodbine this Saturday, and that changes the conversation before we even look at a single speed figure. With 73°F temperatures and a wet track greeting horses and handicappers alike, today's 9-race card demands extra attention to surface preferences and pace scenarios — especially with three turf routes on the slate that could see late scratches or surface switches depending on how the footing holds up.

Padraig (#3) is the standout here on TrackWiz ratings, posting an 87.08 — more than 20 points clear of the next best horse in the field. That edge is reinforced by a 14% career win rate, well above the field average, and trainer Michael Wright, Jr. has the horse in good hands at this claiming level. Jockey Eswan Flores takes the call, and with that kind of rating separation, Padraig should be able to sit comfortably in the pace and make a decisive move. At 3/1 on the morning line, this is a square price for what looks like a clear top selection.
Knowing (#1) opens as the morning-line favorite at 5/2, and while the TrackWiz rating of 66.19 trails Padraig by a wide margin, this horse fits the race as a solid place contender. Pietro Moran gets the mount — a capable rider who can maximize position early in a short sprint. The 4% career win rate is modest, but in a field this compressed at the claiming level, Knowing has enough consistency to fill the exacta.
Big Lew (#2) is the show play here at 6/1 on the morning line, offering some exotic value against shorter-priced horses above. The TrackWiz rating of 62.86 puts Big Lew third in the field, and an average speed figure of 55 edges out several rivals. Desean Bynoe gets the call, and if Padraig and Knowing lock up the top two spots, Big Lew looks capable of hanging around for a piece.
Race 2
Maiden Optional Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
A maiden optional claiming dirt sprint with two horses — Party Hotline and C C Athena — separating themselves from the rest of the field on ratings, setting up what could be a two-horse race at the top.
Party Hotline (#3) is our top selection in this maiden field, carrying the highest TrackWiz rating at 88.54 and the leading average speed figure of 53 — matching C C Athena but in a horse who grades out significantly better overall. Trainer Todd Kettleson sends this one out with Pietro Moran in the irons, a sharp combination at this level. As the 2/1 morning-line favorite, the price isn't generous, but the rating edge over the rest of the field is real and hard to dismiss in a wide-open maiden race.
C C Athena (#1) is the natural place horse here, checking in with a 79.68 TrackWiz rating — second best in the race by a comfortable margin. Trainer Michael Mattine hands the mount to Austin Adams, and at 3/1 she offers better value than the favorite while still having the profile to finish in the top two. In a maiden field with this much uncertainty, landing the 1-3 exacta looks like the sensible play.
Frac's C E O (#6) rounds out the ticket as our show play at 5/2 on the morning line, posting the highest average speed figure in the race at 54 — a tick above both Party Hotline and C C Athena. Trainer Patrick Dixon sends this one out with Jalon L. Samuel, and while the 55.53 TrackWiz rating leaves some distance between Frac's C E O and the top two, the speed edge is a real asset in a six-furlong sprint. Include this one in your trifectas.
Race 3
Maiden Special Weight · 6 fur · Turf
Charmingly Evasive looms as the class of this maiden special weight turf sprint, but a deep field with several lightly raced runners makes pace projections tricky and keeps the exotics interesting.
Charmingly Evasive (#7) tops the TrackWiz ratings at 88.83 — the highest mark in the race — and is trained by the formidable Mark E. Casse barn, which routinely produces sharp turf maidens at Woodbine. Emma-Jayne Wilson, one of the most experienced riders at the meet, takes the mount, which is a strong combination heading into this 6-furlong grass sprint. The 9/5 morning line makes her a short chalk, but when you have a Casse/Wilson combo with the top rating in a maiden turf field, the price is what it is.
Lakota Lady (#1) is our place selection at 3/1, bringing a solid 76.37 TrackWiz rating that puts her comfortably second in this field. Romero Ramsay Maragh picks up the mount for trainer Blair A. Miller, and the inside post — which can be advantageous on the Woodbine turf course — is a potential bonus. With Charmingly Evasive likely getting pressed early, Lakota Lady has the profile to stalk and pick up the pieces for second.
Headspin (#5) slots in as our show play at 5/2, sharing the top average speed figure of 55 in the race alongside Charmingly Evasive and Lakota Lady. Pietro Moran brings high-quality experience to the Kevin Attard barn, a trainer who consistently produces ready turf runners. At 5/2, Headspin offers fair value as a trifecta piece, and the Attard barn also has Beautiful Things in the race, giving them two chances to hit the board.
Today's three free races each come with a clear top pick backed by solid TrackWiz ratings. Padraig opens the card in a 5½-furlong dirt claiming sprint — exactly the kind of short, sharp race where a wet-track speed bias can be decisive. In Race 2, Party Hotline draws our attention in the maiden optional claiming at six furlongs on dirt, and with an 88.54 rating and morning line of 2/1, there's real substance behind the market respect. Race 3 is the one to watch closely given the weather: Charmingly Evasive tops our board at 9/5 for a turf maiden special weight, but keep an eye on any surface change announcements — if this one gets moved to dirt, the handicapping picture shifts entirely.
