Thistledown Picks & Predictions — June 1, 2026
Happy June, handicappers. Thistledown kicks off the new month with an 8-race all-dirt card this Monday, and the weather is cooperating — cloudy skies and a comfortable 70°F should keep the track playing fair with no rain-induced bias to account for. That's a clean slate for speed horses and closers alike.
Today's card leans heavily on sprints, with five races going 6 furlongs or shorter. But don't sleep on the two route races — Race 2 (1 mile, Starter Optional Claiming) and Race 5 (1 mile, Claiming) each carry legitimate pace questions that could make or break exacta tickets. It's the kind of card where knowing how a race will be run matters just as much as knowing who has the best numbers.
TrackWiz analysis covers all 8 races. Three are free for every reader, and five are unlocked for premium subscribers. Let's get into it.
Best Bets
Race 1
Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
An 11-horse claiming sprint that's tightly contested at the top, with two horses separated by barely a point in the TrackWiz ratings — expect a hot pace and a potential closer's advantage.
Brief Encounter tops our TrackWiz ratings at 85.62 and comes in with a 22% career win rate, which is a solid number in this claiming company. Jockey Luis Raul Rivera gives this one a professional rider who knows how to navigate a big field in a six-furlong dirt sprint. The 4/1 morning line represents fair value for the highest-rated horse in the race, and with a pace likely to get hot early in this 11-horse field, a stalker or closer profile could be perfectly set up here.
Kettle Kiss rates just a whisker behind at 84.43 and brings a strong 26% career win percentage — one of the better marks in this field. The 7/2 morning line actually makes this horse a live win threat as well, so if you're playing exotics, pairing Kettle Kiss underneath Brief Encounter makes a lot of sense. Erik Barbaran takes the mount and figures to have this one in a good position early.
Val's Twinstar checks in with a 67.28 TrackWiz rating and a 20% career win clip, giving trainer Valerie K. Shanyfelt a legitimate exotics contender. At 6/1 on the morning line, there's some real value here for trifecta players looking for a live third-place finisher who won't crush the payout. Luis Antonio Gonzalez riding keeps the connections sharp in a wide-open bottom half of this field.
Race 2
Starter Optional Claiming · 1 mi · Dirt
A seven-horse Starter Optional Claiming mile on dirt where one horse stands out on the numbers, but a deep middle tier makes the exacta and trifecta worth attacking.
Strike Appeal is the clear class of this field based on TrackWiz analysis — an 87.81 rating leads all horses here by more than eight points, and a 30% career win percentage is elite for this level. Trainer Michelle Winters sends this one out at a 5/2 morning line, which feels like slight overlay territory given the ratings gap. Alexander Chavez has the call, and over a mile on dirt, a horse with this kind of profile should be able to rate and kick.
Puff'smagicdragon is the logical backup with a 79.17 rating and an impressive 27% career win rate — that's a horse that has shown up consistently when asked. Trainer Jeffrey A. Radosevich also has Master of the Nite in this race, which gives the barn a two-pronged attack that could complicate pace projections. Erik Barbaran aboard is a plus, and the 5/1 morning line offers real value if you're constructing exactas.
Goshen rates third in the field at 74.12 and brings a respectable 23% career win percentage to the table. Rocco Bowen is a reliable hand in the irons, and trainer Nestor R. Rivera is no stranger to getting horses placed at this level. At 4/1, Goshen is priced close to fair value as a show pick but has enough upside to outrun the morning line if things set up right.
Race 3
Allowance · 6 fur · Dirt
A compact five-horse allowance sprint with a legitimate top two that should battle on figures, while the rest of the field faces a significant class and speed gap to bridge.
Excitement owns an 88.54 TrackWiz rating — the best mark in this five-horse field — and posts an average speed figure of 55, tied for the top raw number here. The 2/1 morning line is fair but not generous, so this is more of a win key in exotics than a standalone value play. Rocco Bowen is one of the sharper riders at this meet, and with trainer Timothy E. Hamm sending this one out, the horse should be fit and ready.
Dream On Baby posts the same 55 average speed figure as Excitement but rates a step below at 75.04 — still a strong number and good enough to earn a place ticket. The 9/5 morning line suggests the betting public may actually make this one the favorite by post time, so the place pool could be thin. Either way, trainer Ricardo Gonzalez has this horse primed, and Anthony Rodriguez knows how to get one placed from the inside post.
Ruffin brings a 61.68 rating and a career win percentage of 33%, which is legitimately eye-catching — this horse has a strong history of closing out races. A 54 average speed figure is workable at this level, and the 3/1 morning line gives you some meat on the bone for trifecta construction. David J. Haldar gets the call for trainer Justin Radosevich, and if the top two set a pace duel, Ruffin could be first horse home from off the pace.
Our three free best bets today center on a pair of 6-furlong dirt sprints and a one-mile route. In Race 1 (Claiming, 6 fur), Brief Encounter opens at 4/1 on the morning line — a number we think is generous given a TrackWiz rating of 85.62. Race 2 takes us to the route with Strike Appeal (5/2 morning line, 87.81 rating) in the Starter Optional Claiming mile, where pace shape should set up nicely for a presser. Then Race 3 brings the day's first allowance test, and Excitement stands out at 2/1 with our highest free-race rating of 88.54 — a horse that looks like the class of the field on current form.
With the track expected to be consistent under overcast skies, early speed hasn't been artificially pumped up by a drying-out surface. Watch for horses that can stalk and pounce in the sprints — that shape is likely to be rewarded today.
