Saratoga Picks & Predictions — August 8, 2026

14 racesAll Saratoga picks

It's a beautiful Saturday at the Spa — partly cloudy skies, a comfortable 80°F, and 14 races on the board. Saratoga in August doesn't get much better than this, and today's card delivers the goods from first post to nightcap.

The headliners are four stakes races spread across dirt and turf, giving us plenty of high-class action to sink our teeth into. But don't sleep on the undercard — a pair of allowance optional claiming routes and multiple maiden sprints set up some sharp angles earlier in the day.

TrackWiz has ratings and top picks locked in for all 14 races. Three of them are on the house — no subscription needed. Let's get into it.

Best Bets

Race 1

Maiden Special Weight · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt

A wide-open maiden sprint with nine first-timers or lightly-raced juveniles, so trainer and jockey horsepower will do a lot of the talking here.

win3GorillazML 5/2

Gorillaz tops our TrackWiz ratings at 57.5 and draws one of the meet's elite pilot-trainer combos in Luis Saez and Danny Gargan. In a field where raw speed figures are scarce, the morning line of 5/2 reflects genuine market respect. At 6½ furlongs on the dirt, this distance favors a horse with early punch, and Gargan has a knack for getting Saratoga maidens ready to fire first out.

place7GaudreauML 7/2

Gaudreau (7) comes in with a 55.83 TrackWiz rating and the Chad C. Brown/Flavien Prat axis behind him — a combination that routinely ships well-prepared first-starters to the Spa. Brown's barn has a strong record debuting horses in maiden sprints at this meet, making Gaudreau a logical place horse even if Gorillaz gets to the wire first.

show8HemingwayML 9/2

Hemingway (8) is another well-connected newcomer, backed by Brad H. Cox and Irad Ortiz, Jr. — a duo that doesn't need many starts to find the winner's circle. His 54.17 rating slots him neatly third in this field, and the 9/2 morning line suggests the market agrees. In a race with minimal form to separate the field, Cox's record with first-time starters keeps Hemingway in the exotics.

Race 2

Maiden Special Weight · 6 1/2 fur · Dirt

Another maiden sprint loaded with first-timers, but this one features a legitimate pace question with several early-speed pedigrees in the mix and a wide-open betting market to match.

win8MystrixML 7/2

Mystrix (8) leads our TrackWiz ratings at 55.83 and brings the Danny Gargan/Luis Saez connection — the same pairing we're leaning on in Race 1. In a field where most horses are unknown quantities, Mystrix's edge on our model at favorable 7/2 odds is the clearest signal we have. Gargan has been sharp this Saratoga meet and Saez gives him every chance to show ability from the gate.

place5AdmiraltyML 9/2

Admiralty (5) rates second on our sheet at 54.17 and benefits from the Todd Pletcher/Jose Ortiz combination, one of the most productive trainer-jockey duos at Saratoga. The 9/2 morning line is workable, and Pletcher's first-time starters at the Spa consistently hit the board at a solid clip. If Mystrix gets challenged early, Admiralty could be the one closing into the gap.

show10Implied OpenML 6/1

Implied Open (10) brings an average speed figure of 56 — the highest posted among horses with any published workout line in this field — and Manuel Franco picks up the mount for William Walden's barn. The 6/1 morning line offers some value for a horse who has at least shown us something in the mornings. In a wide-open maiden, that sliver of form data is worth including in your exotics.

Race 3

Allowance Optional Claiming · 1 1/8 mi · Dirt

Two horses stand well clear of the field on our ratings, setting up a potential match race between a class horse and a high-win-percentage standout at a route distance that will test stamina.

win3Full ScreenML 3/1

Full Screen (3) is the class of this allowance optional claiming field with an 87.08 TrackWiz rating — a full 25 points clear of the next contender. Jose Ortiz rides for Saffie Joseph Jr., a trainer who knows how to place horses for maximum impact. The 3/1 morning line looks fair for a horse rated this well above his rivals, and at 1⅛ miles on the dirt, Full Screen's profile suggests he has the staying power to get the job done.

place7Instant ReplayML 5/1

Instant Replay (7) checks in at 81.35 on our model and carries a striking 50% career win rate — meaning when this horse fires, he fires. Flavien Prat gets the call for Brad Cox, and that combination at Saratoga is worth underlining every time you see it. At 5/1 on the morning line, there's genuine place value here if Full Screen handles the class question at the top.

show4VibeML 5/2

Vibe (4) is the most intriguing show option with an eye-popping 60% career win percentage — the best in the field — even if the TrackWiz rating of 61.09 puts him third on our sheet. Irad Ortiz Jr. for Todd Pletcher is always dangerous, and a horse who wins six out of ten career starts is hard to leave out of your tickets. The 5/2 morning line makes him overlaid as a win candidate but solid as a safety net.

Our three free races cover the early part of the card and feature two maiden sprints on the dirt and an allowance optional claiming route going 1 1/8 miles. In maiden company, we lean toward horses whose TrackWiz ratings separate them from the field — Gorillaz (Race 1, rated 57.5) and Mystrix (Race 2, rated 55.83) both grade out as the class of their respective fields off our model, and both are fairly priced on the morning line at 5/2 and 7/2.

Race 3 is where things get interesting on the free side. Full Screen draws our top rating of the open races at 87.08 — a figure that holds up well even against allowance company stretching out to 1 1/8 miles on the dirt. With partly cloudy conditions and the track expected to be in good shape, pace scenario and class edge will matter here. Full Screen looks like a horse built for this spot.
