Mountaineer Picks & Predictions — October 19, 2026
Eight races are on tap at Mountaineer Park tonight, and the conditions couldn't be more cooperative — clear skies, a crisp 54°F, and what looks like a firm turf course to kick things off. That kind of weather in mid-October at Mountaineer is a gift, and it should keep the turf playing true through the early part of the card.
The mix tonight is interesting: three turf or dirt claiming sprints to start things off, followed by a pair of allowance spots in the middle of the card that tend to draw classier horses and tighter finishes. Plenty to dig into whether you're here for a few casual wagers or building multi-race exotics late.
Best Bets
Race 1
Claiming · 1 mi · Turf
A wide-open 13-horse turf mile at a mile where the top TrackWiz ratings are tightly bunched — the morning-line favorite isn't even our top-rated horse, setting up a potential overlay situation.
Blumoon Fire tops our ratings at 77.3 despite going off at 9/1 on the morning line — that's a significant gap between public perception and our model's assessment. Trainer Jay P. Bernardini saddles this one with Luis Negron aboard, a barn that knows how to place horses at Mountaineer. The 14% career win rate is solid for this level, and at nearly 4-to-1 over the morning-line favorite Red Royalty in our ratings, Blumoon Fire represents genuine overlay value on the turf.
Red Royalty draws the most respect from the public at 2/1 on the morning line, and a TrackWiz rating of 75.17 confirms this horse belongs near the top. The 5% career win rate is a touch modest, but the rating suggests consistent competitiveness — exactly the profile you want in a place bet in a full field.
Bailey's Girl (No. 4) brings a 16% career win rate to the table, one of the stronger conversion numbers in this field, and pairs that with a 74.48 TrackWiz rating. Norberto Arroyo, Jr. takes the mount — an experienced hand who should keep this one in a good spot in a big field. Good exotics anchor in a race with multiple live contenders.
Race 2
Maiden Claiming · 5 fur · Turf
Maiden claimers on the turf at five furlongs — a short, sharp sprint where first-time or lightly-raced youngsters can catch opponents cold, and one horse stands well above the field in our ratings.
Kayleigh's Kitten is the clear top choice here with an 88.54 TrackWiz rating — the highest number in the race by more than 22 points. Trainer Jeffrey D. Jackson sends her out with Luis Alberto Batista in the irons, and the 54 average speed figure ties for the best in the field. At 2/1 on the morning line, she's not a secret, but in a maiden field this soft, the standout is often worth taking at face value.
Juno Palace also draws Luis Alberto Batista — interesting that the jockey's name appears twice, suggesting connections may have prioritized the 12 horse, but Juno Palace's 66.18 rating and matching 54 average speed figure make this horse legitimately dangerous at 10/1. That's a morning-line price that looks generous given the underlying numbers.
Chizzy opens at 7/1 and carries a 65.66 TrackWiz rating — third in the field — making her a sensible show bet and exotics connector. Trainer Virginia Demczyk puts Ricardo Barrios up, and the 52 average speed figure is consistent with what this maiden turf sprint will demand. At 7/1, she's a fair price for a horse that profiles to hit the board.
Race 3
Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
Lady Catalina looms as a heavy morning-line favorite in this six-furlong dirt claimer, and our model backs that up emphatically — the question is whether the 7/5 price offers any value or whether the supporting cast can make exotics interesting.
Lady Catalina earns an 89.42 TrackWiz rating — the top mark in the race by a wide margin — and the 7/5 morning line reflects exactly that dominance. Trainer Jay P. Bernardini, one of the more active barns at Mountaineer, sends her out with Luis Negron. The 53 average speed figure is sharp for this level, and while the 3% career win rate looks low, our model's process goes deeper than raw win percentage to capture overall form quality.
Campaign Mischief is the natural complement at 3/1, posting a 73.7 TrackWiz rating that's comfortably clear of the rest of the field outside the favorite. Trainer Jay P. Bernardini doubles up in this race — always worth noting when a barn has multiple runners, as it can signal confidence in the stablemate's fitness. A 7% career win rate at this level is workmanlike, and Brandon Tapara should keep this one in the hunt.
Butterfly Effect (No. 3) brings a 66.98 rating and a respectable 8% career win rate, with trainer Kent Knudsen pairing with Deshawn L. Parker. The 54 average speed figure is the best in the field outside of Lady Catalina, suggesting this horse can sustain a fast enough pace to earn a check. Solid show-ticket and exacta filler at 4/1.
Our free analysis covers the first three races — and there's real range here. Race 1 on the turf mile features Blumoon Fire at a generous 9/1 morning line, a legitimate longshot angle worth taking seriously. In Race 2, Kayleigh's Kitten earns the top TrackWiz rating among our free picks at 88.54 in a short 5-furlong turf sprint — maiden claimers at this distance on the turf can be chalky affairs, so Kitten's strong rating at 2/1 makes her an attractive foundation play. Then Race 3 shifts to the main track, where Lady Catalina comes in as a heavy favorite at 7/5 with the highest rating of the three free races (89.42) — she looks like the kind of short-priced horse you use as a key rather than bet to win alone.
The early dirt-to-turf surface split is something to watch tonight. Horses that have been training for the turf or have turf breeding will get an edge in Races 1 and 2, while the main track horses in Race 3 should benefit from the dry, cool air and a likely fast surface. Keep those surface tendencies in mind as you handicap.
