Free Louisiana Downs Picks & Predictions for Today — September 30, 2026
It's a warm Wednesday afternoon at Louisiana Downs — 92°F under partly cloudy skies — and the turf is going to be the story today. Five of eight races are carded on the grass, which means pace scenarios and ground-saving trips are going to matter a whole lot more than pure speed figures.
We've got an 8-race card to break down, and TrackWiz analysis has identified some genuinely interesting spots across the board. The morning line favorites are far from locks, and there's real value lurking in a couple of these fields if you know where to look.
Three races are open to everyone today — Races 1, 2, and 3 — and our premium subscribers get the full-card treatment on Races 4 through 8, including pace projections and exotic ticket construction.
3 Free Races Today at Louisiana Downs
Race 1
Claiming · 1 mi · Turf
A wide-open 11-horse turf mile on the claiming ranks, but two horses stand well above the rest on TrackWiz ratings — and the morning line favorite isn't one of them.
La Jefacita tops the TrackWiz ratings at 87.81 — the highest mark in this field by a clear margin over Blue Mist — and gets a live 5/2 morning line that represents solid value in a race this deep. Trainer Jonathan Wong sends her out with jockey Isaac Castillo up, a combination worth watching. Her 11% career win rate is modest but not alarming at the claiming level, and a one-mile turf trip should suit a horse with her profile. When the rating gap is this wide at a price that isn't chalk, you take notice.
Blue Mist draws the 9/5 morning line favor from trainer Jonas Gibson and jockey Elio J. Barrera, and her 16% career win rate is the best in this field — nearly triple the rate of most rivals. Her TrackWiz rating of 73.28 checks in second-best overall, and she matches La Jefacita's average speed figure of 54. If she fires her best and La Jefacita has any trouble, Blue Mist is right there to collect.
Awree at 9/2 morning line is the third-best rated horse in the field at 55.27, sitting comfortably ahead of the pack chasing the top two. Trainer Juan Munoz Cano and jockey Emanuel Nieves give this one a professional connections angle, and in a race where many rivals are posting ratings in the teens and twenties, Awree's floor looks solid enough to land in the exotics.
Race 2
Starter Optional Claiming · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
A compact six-horse starter optional claiming sprint on the dirt, and this one has a legitimate top-heavy look — two horses separate themselves on the ratings sheet while the rest play catch-up.
Yoda Winner is the class of this field, posting an 86.69 TrackWiz rating while carrying a 33% career win rate — by far the highest winning percentage in the race. Paired with jockey Isaac Castillo under trainer Pedro Rodriguez-Torres, this is a horse whose connections know how to win. She matches the field's top average speed figure of 55 and goes at 8/5, a fair price if not a generous one. When a horse brings both elite ratings AND that kind of career win percentage, the 8/5 is worth accepting.
Chaparrita is the sneaky interesting play at 6/1 — she checks in with an 82.71 TrackWiz rating that's nearly as strong as the top pick, yet goes off at almost four times the morning line price. A 20% career win rate is respectable, and she also posts a top-tier average speed of 55. Trainer Jervon Broussard and jockey Rey Williams could make this a very live exacta half underneath Yoda Winner.
Hurricane Lassie brings the most intriguing career win percentage of anyone outside the top two — 40% lifetime, which is an eye-catching number for any horse. Her TrackWiz rating of 72.49 slots her third in the field, and she shares the 55 average speed figure with the top pair. At 3/1, she's not a huge overlay, but in a short field where the top three all figure to be competitive, she's a sound show bet and a must-use in trifecta tickets.
Race 3
Claiming · 7 1/2 fur · Turf
The pace scenario here is a tale of two horses — Russells Hustle and Soul Coaxing dominate the ratings and flank the field as the two legitimate contenders, making exacta construction almost too clean.
Russells Hustle posts the field's best TrackWiz rating at 88.54 and draws the 2/1 morning line in a race where the second-best rated horse is a 7/5 favorite — meaning the market is split on these two. What tips us to Russells Hustle is that 55 average speed figure, highest in the field, combined with a 12% career win rate on turf that suggests he consistently fires big numbers. Isaac Castillo is in the irons for trainer Jonathan Wong, the same barn that had La Jefacita in Race 1. This duo has some momentum today.
Soul Coaxing is actually the morning line favorite at 7/5, which tells you the public respects this horse deeply — and rightfully so with an 81.08 TrackWiz rating and a 21% career win rate that leads the field. Trainer Juan Munoz Cano runs two horses in this race, and Soul Coaxing with Elio J. Barrera looks like the stable's main hope. We're comfortable slotting her second on ratings, but don't be surprised if she reverses the order at the windows.
Dude Drop Kid at 8/1 morning line is a value inclusion for the show position and exotics, with a TrackWiz rating of 53.68 that leaps past the rest of the field once you get beyond the top two. The 12% career win rate is similar to Russells Hustle's, and trainer Joseph M. Foster runs a second horse in this same race — he clearly believes in the distance and surface. At 8/1, there's real overlay potential if the top two have any issues.
The free portion of today's card is loaded with turf intrigue. La Jefacita opens the day in a mile turf claimer at a very workable 5/2 morning line — our top-rated pick in Race 1 at 87.81 and a horse we think has been underestimated by the morning line makers. Race 3 is where we get really fired up: Russells Hustle draws the top TrackWiz rating of the free races at 88.54 in a 7½-furlong turf claimer, and at 2/1, the price is fair enough to build around in your multi-race tickets.
Sandwiched in between, Race 2 goes to the dirt for a 5½-furlong Starter Optional Claiming sprint — a pace-heavy surface where Yoda Winner (8/5 ML, 86.69 rating) figures to be in the mix early and could be tough to catch if things set up right. On a warm afternoon like this, keeping an eye on how horses handle the heat in later races is a smart angle too.
