Keeneland Picks & Predictions — October 9, 2026

10 racesAll Keeneland picks

October at Keeneland is as good as it gets in American racing, and Friday's 10-race card doesn't disappoint. Partly cloudy skies and a comfortable 77°F have the Lexington faithful in a great mood, and conditions look tailor-made for speed on the dirt and genuine form on the turf — no weather excuses today.

The card is a solid mix of claimers, allowances, maiden fields, and a marquee turf stakes to close out the afternoon. Six of the ten races are run on the turf, so if you've got a soft spot for grass horses, you're going to be busy. The centerpiece is Race 9 — a 1½-mile turf stakes where our top-rated contender Just a Touch draws our attention at a very workable 5/2 morning line.

TrackWiz has full analysis on all 10 races, with the first three free for every reader. Let's get into it.

Best Bets

Race 1

Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt

A wide-open 6-furlong claiming opener where one horse stands well above the field on our ratings, but the pace scenario could scramble the order and create some live longshot prices.

win1Willing N AbledML 3/1

Willing N Abled sits atop our TrackWiz ratings at 87.08 — a full 28 points clear of the second-rated horse in the field — and that kind of separation in a claiming sprint is hard to ignore. Jockey Jareth Loveberry has the assignment for trainer Larry Rivelli, a pairing worth noting in a spot like this. The 66% career win rate is the best in this field by a wide margin and tells you this horse knows how to close out a race. At 3/1 on the morning line, this is a well-priced top selection, not a chalk play you have to talk yourself into.

place2MusicalML 4/1

Musical (No. 2) brings a 25% career win rate and the highest average speed figure in the field at 56, a tick above most rivals. Trainer Kelli Martinez sends out a horse that profiles as a pace factor, and at 4/1 on the morning line there's solid place value here. If Willing N Abled draws all the attention, Musical could sneak into the exacta.

show5Tiger's LegacyML 2/1

Tiger's Legacy is listed as the second choice on the morning line at 2/1, though our TrackWiz rating of 55.23 doesn't fully back that favoritism — which means the show price could be generous if the public bets this one down. Rafael Bejarano climbs aboard for trainer Chris Hartman, a jockey who rarely wastes a mount. A 9% career win rate is the red flag, but in a claiming field this competitive, hitting the board is a realistic outcome.

Race 2

Maiden Claiming · 7 fur · Dirt

A sprawling 16-horse maiden claimer at 7 furlongs where first-out runners and unraced types fill the entries, making TrackWiz ratings the clearest separator in a field where no horse has ever broken the maiden.

win4Tiz GeneralML 8/1

Tiz General (No. 4) tops our TrackWiz ratings at 79.79 in a field where the next best is nearly 23 points lower — that's an enormous gap in a maiden claimer. Luis Fuenmayor gets the call for trainer Carlos Munoz, and the 54 average speed figure is among the top marks in the field. At 8/1 on the morning line, the public is underestimating this one based on what our model sees, making this a prime value win play.

place12Big Mike FinkML 3/1

Big Mike Fink (No. 12) is the morning-line favorite at 3/1 with the backing of trainer Brendan P. Walsh and jockey Tyler Gaffalione — one of the top rider-trainer combinations in the game right now. A 56.67 TrackWiz rating sits comfortably second in the field, and Walsh runners on debut at major fall meets carry real respect. If Tiz General gets the job done, Big Mike Fink projects as the most likely place finisher.

show16Amazing MaxML 4/1

Amazing Max (No. 16) is tied for third in our ratings at 55.00 and carries the powerful Irad Ortiz Jr./Brad H. Cox combination — a pairing that routinely converts at high rates on debut. A 53 average speed figure gives a reasonable baseline, and at 4/1 the public pricing lines up with a horse worth including underneath in exactas and trifectas. Cox is always dangerous first out at Keeneland.

Race 3

Allowance · 1 1/16 mi · Turf

This 1 1/16-mile turf allowance features a class of horses with varied win percentages and a genuine pace question — the field is loaded with tactical options but no clear lone speed, setting up a potentially pressured run that favors horses who can close.

win8SmokeML 5/2

Smoke (No. 8) leads our TrackWiz ratings at 83.42, separating itself from the field by double digits, and Tyler Gaffalione is a dream jockey for a horse with a closer's profile on the Keeneland turf. Trainer Brendan P. Walsh knows this course well and sends horses out in peak condition. A 5/2 morning line makes this the second choice on paper, but our model says the rating gap justifies making Smoke the clear top selection.

place6DazzlingML 3/1

Dazzling (No. 6) rates second in the field at 68.42 under Jose L. Ortiz for trainer Steve Asmussen — a formidable combination for a turf route at this level. The 55 average speed figure matches the best in the race and a 25% career win rate shows this horse can get there. At 3/1, the place price will likely be modest, but Dazzling belongs in every multi-race wager.

show3EstardotooML 15/1

Estardotoo (No. 3) is our show pick and the most interesting value angle in the race at 15/1 on the morning line. A TrackWiz rating of 58.61 actually clears several more-fancied rivals, and a 55 average speed figure shows genuine competitiveness on the clock. A 20% career win rate tells you this horse is capable of stringing together a solid effort, and the price makes it worth including in your trifecta combinations.

The first three races on the card are unlocked for everyone, and there's genuine value to dig into across all three. On the dirt in Race 1, Willing N Abled pops out of our model with an 87.08 TrackWiz rating at a fair 3/1 morning line — that's the kind of number we like to see on a 6-furlong claimer where pace shape can get chaotic early. In Race 2, the Maiden Claiming sprint stretches to 7 furlongs and our top pick Tiz General is a genuine overlay candidate at 8/1 on the morning line. When a horse with a near-80 TrackWiz rating is priced that long in a maiden field, that's worth a serious look. Then we shift to the turf for Race 3, an allowance going 1 1/16 miles where Smoke (83.42 rating, 5/2 morning line) gives us a reliable anchor at a reasonable price.

One angle connecting these three free races: the early card figures to establish whether pace or stalkers are thriving on today's surfaces. Clock how the speed horses hold up in Races 1 and 2 — that information will pay dividends when you're structuring tickets deeper in the card.
