Keeneland Picks & Predictions — October 3, 2026
Happy October at Keeneland. There's nothing quite like early fall at the Lexington oval — the bluegrass is still green, the air has that perfect crisp edge, and today we've got 68°F and clear skies setting up what should be ideal conditions across both the dirt and turf courses. Eleven races on the card, and this one has real meat on its bones.
Five stakes races anchor the back half of the card, giving us a loaded afternoon from Race 6 through Race 10 across dirt and turf. Throw in a couple of allowance optional claiming spots, a pair of maiden specials to open and close things out, and you've got a full-card menu worth digging into — whether you're here for a casual afternoon or grinding multi-race sequences.
TrackWiz has full analysis on all 11 races. Three of those are free for everyone today, with our complete premium breakdown covering the final eight behind the subscription wall. Let's get into it.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Special Weight · 7 fur · Dirt
A wide-open maiden special weight at 7 furlongs where TrackWiz ratings tell a completely different story than the morning line — brace yourself for a possible upset at big odds.
Noble Anthem is our top-rated horse in this field at 68.82 — a full ten points clear of the morning-line favorite — despite being listed at 12/1 on the morning line. That disconnect between the public price and our internal rating is exactly the kind of overlay we look for in maiden races. John Velazquez gets the call, and JRV rarely wastes his time on horses without a shot. If this one fires anywhere close to her ceiling, the field is in trouble.
Dream Machine draws the logical favorite role with the powerful Chad Brown/Irad Ortiz Jr. combination, and that barn wins at a high clip with first-time starters at Keeneland. Her TrackWiz rating of 58.67 leads the rest of the field and she carries an average speed figure of 54. She's the one to beat on paper — just not, in our view, the most likely winner.
Commentate has the second-best average speed figure in the field at 55 and lands with Jose Ortiz in the irons, which is never a bad thing. Trainer Cherie DeVaux sends this one out at a fair 3/1, and a rating of 56.67 slots her firmly in the mix for the superfecta. She's the logical exotics anchor if the top two don't cooperate.
Race 2
Allowance · 6 fur · Dirt
Three horses enter with perfect career win records in this 6-furlong dirt allowance, setting up a fascinating clash between unbeaten types — finding the right one is the puzzle.
Chancery tops our TrackWiz ratings at 59.00 and sports a 100% career win rate, making her the standout on both raw numbers and results. She draws post 1 with Axel Concepcion, and trainer George Arnold II has her prepped in what looks like a good spot. At 8/5 on the morning line, the market agrees — though the presence of two other unbeaten horses means this won't be a cakewalk.
Maker of Mischief is the other 100% winner in the field and carries a TrackWiz rating of 56.67 — second only to Chancery — with Jose Ortiz doing the steering. Trainer Ethan West sends her in at 3/1, and her average speed figure of 56 matches the top of the field. She's the most dangerous threat to the favorite and a must-use in exactas.
Dormie checks in at a solid 55.00 rating with a 50% career win rate, and Luis Saez rarely takes throwaway mounts. She's posted an average speed figure of 56, tied for best in the race, which suggests she's been running fast even without perfect results. At 4/1, she represents real value as the third wheel in a race where two horses are trying to stay unbeaten.
Race 3
Allowance · 1 3/16 mi · Turf
A loaded 11-horse turf allowance going 1 3/16 miles at Keeneland — three horses cluster near the top of the TrackWiz ratings while the morning line wildly undervalues at least two of them.
Paseo is our top-rated horse in this race at 76.88 — a legitimate standout — yet the morning line has her at 10/1, which looks like a significant price. Brian Hernandez Jr. is one of the best turf jockeys in Kentucky, and trainer Ian Wilkes knows this oval as well as anyone. With an average speed figure of 54 and an 11% career win rate in what appears to be a tough spot, the upside is clearly there if the price holds.
Siouxse rates a close second on our model at 75.42 and gets the Hall of Fame ride from John Velazquez — that's a combo that wins on turf at Keeneland. Graham Motion is one of the elite turf trainers in the country, and at 9/2 she might actually be the value play if Paseo attracts the overlay money. Her 14% career win rate in a big field is respectable, and she figures to be running late.
Episist at 6/1 makes a lot of sense as the show anchor — a 73.23 TrackWiz rating is third-best in the field, and Steven Asmussen has the horses to win big races at Keeneland. Jose Ortiz stays busy on today's card and clearly likes this spot. At a mile and three-sixteenths, closers get every chance to finish, and Episist profiles as exactly that type.
Our three free races today span the card nicely — Race 1 (Maiden Special Weight, 7 furlongs dirt), Race 2 (Allowance, 6 furlongs dirt), and Race 3 (Allowance, 1 3/16 miles turf) — and they tell an interesting early story about today's pace and surface picture. Keep an eye on how the early dirt sprints develop; that information feeds directly into how you want to approach the longer dirt routes later in the card.
The headliner of the free tier is Noble Anthem in Race 1 — a 12/1 morning liner that earned our top rating of 68.82 in the opener. When a price horse tops our model in a maiden field, that's worth a serious look. Over on the turf, Paseo comes in at 10/1 in Race 3 with a 76.88 TrackWiz rating — the highest of the free trio — setting up nicely at a route distance on what should be a firm Keeneland turf under these clear conditions. Both plays carry legitimate value at their morning line prices, and that's exactly the kind of spot we love to highlight for all readers.
