Horseshoe Indianapolis Picks & Predictions — October 20, 2026
It's a beauty of an October afternoon at Horseshoe Indianapolis — clear skies, 68°F, and the kind of conditions that make every surface play honest. No weather excuses today. Nine races spanning dirt sprints, two turf routes, and a quarter-horse dash at 350 yards make this one of the more varied cards you'll see at this track all meet.
TrackWiz analysis has identified strong angles across the board, headlined by a couple of morning-line favorites we actually agree with and at least one spot where the crowd looks likely to get it wrong. Maiden Special Weights bookend the dirt card, a pair of Allowances fill the early slots, and a handful of Claiming and Starter Optional Claiming races round things out — plenty of spots where class and pace dynamics set up clear edges.
With both the dirt and turf rated fair and fast under ideal fall weather, speed figures should translate cleanly today. Let's break it down.
Best Bets
Race 1
Maiden Special Weight · 1 mi 70 yd · Dirt
A maiden special weight opener at a mile and 70 yards where two horses separate themselves from the field on TrackWiz ratings — this figures to be a two-horse show with the rest of the field playing for thirds.
Pro Fever tops our TrackWiz ratings at 89.12, the highest mark in the field, and draws favorable attention at 8/5 on the morning line. Trained by John Haran, who also saddles Midnight Temple in this race — a trainer doubling up in a maiden is often a sign of confidence in the barn's better entry. The mile and 70 yards on dirt suits horses that can rate off a pace, and with an average speed figure of 52 matching the field median, the edge here is clearly in overall TrackWiz grade.
Red So O Lo is the logical counter at 2/1, posting a solid 82.51 TrackWiz rating — second best in the field and well within striking range of the top pick. Rodney A. Prescott gets the call for trainer Robert E. Dobbs, Jr., and the slightly longer route at a mile and 70 yards gives this one every opportunity to close ground late if the pace heats up early.
Power Driven at 5/1 is the most interesting third option in this field, carrying a 53.33 rating and one of three horses posting an average speed figure of 54 — a tick above the pack. Trainer Robert M. Gorham sends out a horse with enough upside to hit the board, and at 5/1 the show price offers solid value for exotic players looking to anchor a trifecta.
Race 2
Allowance · 6 fur · Dirt
An allowance sprint at six furlongs where the morning-line favorite carries a big TrackWiz edge, but a 22% career winner lurking at double-digit odds gives the value hunters something to chew on.
El Payasito is the class of this field by most measures — an 88.83 TrackWiz rating, a 25% career win rate, and a 9/5 morning line that reflects legitimate confidence from the oddsmakers. Victor Lara picks up the mount for trainer Genaro Garcia, and with an average speed figure of 55 matching the top tier in this field, the six-furlong dirt sprint is right in this horse's wheelhouse. At near even money the win price is thin, but the profile demands respect.
Unbridled Valor (81.74 rating, 5/1 ML) represents a live place threat with Hannah Leahey steering for Israel J. Garcia. An 8% career win rate sounds modest, but the speed figure of 55 matches the top horses in the field, and a place finish at 5/1 morning line odds makes this an attractive exacta partner.
Count the Cash is the sneaky inclusion here — a 22% career win rate is the second-best figure in the field, and the 75.84 TrackWiz rating is comfortably in the top three. Trainer Tracey J. Wisner sends this one out at 10/1, which is juicy for a horse with proven winning form. If the top two battle up front, Count the Cash with Alexander Crispin aboard could be picking up the pieces.
Race 3
Allowance · 6 fur · Dirt
This six-furlong allowance is tighter than it looks — four horses rated 62 or above on TrackWiz, with a legitimate pace scenario that could set up closers nicely and make exacta prices more generous than the morning line suggests.
Slam Dunk Justice tops the TrackWiz board at 87.08 and carries an 18% career win rate into what looks like a solid pace scenario. Marcelino Pedroza, Jr. gets the mount for trainer Genaro Garcia, and with an average speed figure of 56 tying the top mark in the field, this horse has the tools to dominate at six furlongs on dirt. The 3/1 morning line is fair — not a steal, but a legitimate best bet.
Stranger's Church is right on Slam Dunk Justice's heels with a 75.26 rating and the same 3/1 morning line, trained by John Haran with Jose Ramos Gutierrez aboard. A 22% career win rate is among the best in this field, and the 56 average speed figure matches the top tier. If the pace scenario plays out in favor of a presser or mid-pack stalker, this one is dangerous.
Sleepy is the eye-catcher at 4/1 for the show slot — trainer Randy L. Klopp's runner posts a 35% career win rate, the highest in the entire field by a wide margin. Joseph D. Ramos rides, and with a 56 average speed figure and a 74.57 TrackWiz rating, this horse has the pedigree of a winner who can absolutely hit the board here. The win rate alone makes this a must-use in exotic tickets.
Three races are open to all TrackWiz readers today, and they paint a nice picture of what this card has to offer. Race 1 kicks things off with a Maiden Special Weight route going a mile and 70 yards on dirt — longer than most first-level maiden spots and exactly where Pro Fever (8/5 morning line, 89.12 TrackWiz rating) projects to have a pace advantage. Race 2 flips to a 6-furlong Allowance sprint where El Payasito checks in at 88.83 — a tight rating gap separating him from Pro Fever, which tells you these two races are as competitive as anything on the card. Then Race 3 gives you another 6-furlong Allowance with Slam Dunk Justice at 3/1 — a morning line that hints at a potentially beatable favorite somewhere in that field, and our rating of 87.08 suggests there's real value in playing Slam Dunk Justice with confidence rather than trying to beat him.
The early Allowance double in Races 2 and 3 is worth noting — both races share the same distance and surface, and pace scenarios shape up similarly. If a speed-favoring bias emerges early on the dirt, those free picks become even more compelling. Keep an eye on how the first race settles out before you finalize your tickets.
