Horseshoe Indianapolis Picks & Predictions — October 8, 2026
October racing in Indianapolis doesn't get much better than this. A clear afternoon, 74 degrees, and a nine-race card at Horseshoe Indianapolis that mixes dirt sprints, route races, and a pair of turf tests — perfect conditions for a full day at the window.
The turf should be playing firm and fast in this weather, which matters a lot when you've got grass races in Races 4, 6, and 8 all in the mix. Meanwhile, the dirt looks like it'll be consistent all afternoon, giving speed horses a fair shot without any track bias skewing the results. That kind of neutral, honest surface is exactly what you want when you're trying to pick winners on the square.
TrackWiz has you covered across all nine races today, from the opening claiming sprint to a 350-yard quarter-horse dash to close out the card. Three races are free for every reader — Races 1, 2, and 3 — with our full premium breakdown unlocking the remaining six.
Best Bets
Race 1
Claiming · 6 fur · Dirt
The morning line favorite is being faded here — TrackWiz analysis points to a class standout hiding in plain sight at 3/1, setting up a potential overlay in this six-furlong claiming opener.
Unbridled Devine tops our ratings with an 87.08 score — a significant gap over the rest of this field — and backs it up with a 29% career win rate that speaks to consistent competitiveness. Trainer John Haran sends this one out at 3/1, a price that looks generous given the raw numbers. At six furlongs on the dirt, speed figures (averaged at 55) match the top tier of the field, and with Amir Mendoza in the irons, expect a forward-moving effort from the start.
When's Forever (No. 5) sits at 7/2 on the morning line and earns a 79.32 TrackWiz rating — solid middle-of-the-pack territory that could easily translate to a placing. The 16% career win rate is modest, but at this claiming level, consistency counts, and trainer Joseph D. Davis has this one primed for a board finish.
Ekati Flatter draws the rail and carries the favorite's tab at 8/5, which means public money will be pouring in despite our preferred order. A 71.78 rating and 30% career win rate are respectable, and Fernando De La Cruz is a capable pilot — just don't overbet this one at a compressed price when better value exists.
Race 2
Maiden Claiming · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
A wide-open maiden claimer where no horse has broken their maiden yet — and half the field has limited or no speed figure history — making our top-rated contender a standout even at a short price.
Momimosa is the morning-line favorite at 6/5 and justifies that billing with the field's top TrackWiz rating of 59.67. Trainer Cipriano Contreras puts Evin A. Roman up, a productive jockey-trainer partnership worth noting in maiden ranks. With an average speed figure of 52 matching the field's median, Momimosa's edge likely comes from a better trip profile and more seasoning — key factors when breaking maiden horses.
Velvet Reign (No. 3) is an interesting play at 5/1 — this one has no published speed figure, which often signals a first-time starter or a horse who's been working rather than racing. Trainer Robert M. Gorham's entry carries a 53.33 rating, second-best in the field, suggesting hidden upside. In maiden races, unknown quantities with strong morning workouts can outrun their lines.
Haran's Holiday (No. 6) rounds out our exotic trio at 6/1, posting a 51.67 rating and also carrying no average speed figure — another first-timer or lightly raced type from trainer John Haran's barn. Haran also saddles Innisfree Prayer in Race 5, showing a barn in active form. At double-digit value for show, this one's worth including in trifecta tickets.
Race 3
Claiming · 1 1/16 mi · Dirt
Dream Fast and Audubon Bay both draw outside posts and sit well above their odds on the morning line — while the 5/2 favorite Air Charger looks vulnerable against three horses with meaningfully higher ratings.
Audubon Bay (No. 8) is the class horse in this field, period. A 85.62 TrackWiz rating leads all comers, and a 33% career win rate — highest in the race — tells you this horse knows how to finish in front. Trainer Robert M. Gorham puts Andres P. Ulloa up, and at 4/1 on the morning line for a horse this dominant on paper, this looks like a prime overlay. The 1 1/16-mile distance on dirt gives a closer-type room to operate.
Dream Fast (No. 6) is a sneaky value angle here at 8/1. The 78.89 rating is third-best in the field, and trainer Tim Eggleston — who also saddles Indy Kid — has a presence in this race that suggests barn confidence. With Orlando Mojica aboard, a jockey who knows how to rate horses over longer trips, Dream Fast could easily be picking up pieces at the top of the stretch.
Machts Nichts (No. 1) draws the rail and posts a 77.70 rating — close enough to the top trio to warrant exotic inclusion. Trainer Anthony J. Granitz sends out Marcelino Pedroza Jr., and though the 7% career win rate is modest, the speed average of 52 is consistent with this group. The rail at 1 1/16 miles can be a traffic problem early, but if Pedroza gets a clean break, this one runs to the board.
Our three free races give you a solid foundation to build a card around. Unbridled Devine opens the day in Race 1 with an 87.08 TrackWiz rating — the highest of the free trio — and looks like a legitimate play at 3/1 morning line in a six-furlong claiming sprint. In Race 2, morning-line favorite Momimosa draws a lot of attention in the maiden claiming field, though at 6/5 the price will need careful evaluation before pulling the trigger. Then in Race 3, Audubon Bay stretches out to 1 1/16 miles on dirt and rates out at 85.62 — a strong number for a claiming route, and 4/1 offers some cushion if the pace sets up right.
One theme connecting these first three races: all are on the main track, and with 74-degree clear weather keeping conditions honest, there's no weather variable muddying the picture. What you see in the past performances is what you're getting today. That's a green light for trusting TrackWiz ratings in these spots.
