Gulfstream Park Picks & Predictions — October 18, 2026
It's a wet one at Gulfstream Park today. Rain is falling at 81°F in Hallandale Beach, and that's going to matter — especially for the turf races on today's nine-race card. When South Florida gets soaked like this, turf races can shift to the main track at the stewards' discretion, which completely reshapes the pace scenario and changes which horses belong on your ticket.
Despite the weather, this is a genuinely interesting card. We've got a mix of claiming races, maiden claimers, and three Allowance Optional Claiming events that tend to draw better-quality horses — and better betting opportunities. TrackWiz analysis flagged several spots where the morning line looks soft and the value is real.
Three races are available free to all readers. The remaining six are part of our premium full-card breakdown, available to TrackWiz subscribers.
Best Bets
Race 1
Claiming · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
A wide-open claiming sprint where the morning line favorite is also our top-rated horse, but a pair of live longshots lurk underneath and could scramble the exotics.
Tie It With a Bow (#7) is the class of this field by our metrics, posting a TrackWiz rating of 88.54 — a full 15 points clear of the second-ranked horse. Carlos Martinez gets the call, and the 2/1 morning line reflects what the connections already know: this filly shows the highest average speed figure in the field at 57 and has the tools to rate or press depending on the pace scenario. In a 5½-furlong dirt dash where quick fractions can pile up, a horse with both speed and a top rating is exactly the profile you want on top of your tickets.
Kate the Smate (#8) draws the place spot with a solid 73.75 rating and the second-best average speed figure in the race at 56. Trainer Manny Real has her at 9/2 on the morning line — a price that may actually be generous if she fires her best effort. Anthony Thomas takes the mount, and her profile suggests she's a logical stalker type who can benefit if Tie It With a Bow sets the pace honestly.
Fantasy World (#3) is an intriguing show-spot inclusion at 6/1, sporting the joint-best average speed in this field at 57 alongside a TrackWiz rating of 67.71. Trainer Monica McGoey sends her out with Jonathan Ocasio up, and at those odds she's excellent exotic filler — particularly in trifectas where you need a price to land third. Her 8% career win rate is modest, but speed figures don't lie, and she can run her race from whatever position the pace dictates.
Race 2
Maiden Claiming · 5 fur · Turf
A maiden claiming turf sprint with a clear top selection, but in a field of first-time and lightly-raced maidens, anything can happen when horses are still learning their craft.
More Power to You (#5) is the standout here, carrying our top TrackWiz rating of 88.54 in a field where nobody else cracks 56. Trainer Mark Casse — one of the elite conditioners anywhere in North America — gives this maiden every advantage, and Diego Herrera's aggressive style suits a short 5-furlong turf sprint where getting position early is critical. The 2/1 morning line suggests the market agrees, but given the field quality, that may still be a fair price on a horse that profiles as a cut above.
Dr. d'Oro (#2) earns the place nod with the second-highest rating in the field at 55.83 and an average speed of 56 — the best of any horse with a recorded figure in this race. Samy Camacho has been busy at Gulfstream and knows how to navigate turf sprints; trainer Victor Barboza Jr. is a familiar name on this circuit. At 7/2 on the morning line, Dr. d'Oro is a reasonable underneath play in exactas behind the top selection.
Messi's Magic (#1) rounds out the show position at 4/1 with a 55 rating and an average speed figure of 53. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. is one of the most dangerous maiden trainers at Gulfstream, and his horses often improve sharply in their second and third starts. Jockey Micah Husbands keeps the mount, and the inside post in a turf sprint can be an advantage if the pace opens up early.
Race 3
Maiden Claiming · 5 1/2 fur · Dirt
A maiden claiming dirt sprint where the morning-line favorite also tops our ratings, but Gerald Bennett's shipper and a couple of lightly-raced unknowns could make the pace scenario interesting.
The Sazerac (#1) is our top pick at 9/5 on the morning line with a 58.67 TrackWiz rating — the highest in this maiden claiming field. Trainer Carlos David keeps Samy Camacho aboard, a pairing that's been active at Gulfstream. The inside post in a 5½-furlong dirt sprint requires a clean break, and The Sazerac has the average speed figure (54) and overall rating to overcome any traffic concerns. At near-even money, he's the right top selection even if the price isn't exciting.
Hot Rod (#7) is our place pick at 7/2 with a 55.83 rating — right on the heels of the top selection. Trainer Gerald Bennett sends him out with Edwin Gonzalez up, and his recorded average speed of 52 suggests there's upside in his figures if he can translate his works to race day. In a maiden field where half the horses have no published speed figures at all, any horse showing real data at a fair price deserves consideration underneath.
Sweet Interval (#6) fills the show slot at 4/1 with a 55 rating for trainer Beau Chapman and jockey Marcos Meneses. No published average speed figure means she's lightly raced or debuting, which introduces uncertainty — but in maiden races, first-time starters from capable barns can spring surprises. At 4/1, she's good value in trifectas if you're willing to accept the unknown variable her profile represents.
Our three free best bets today are spread across the early part of the card. Tie It With a Bow opens the day in Race 1, a 5½-furlong dirt claiming sprint — rain-softened dirt can favor horses with early pace, so watch the track closely before the first race goes off. In Race 2, More Power to You draws our top rating in a 5-furlong maiden claimer on the turf — the big caveat here is the weather. If that race moves to the dirt, reassess. And in Race 3, The Sazerac gets the nod in another maiden claiming sprint on the main track at 9/5 on the morning line.
One theme connecting these free picks: all three are short-distance sprints where pace dynamics are decisive. On a day when the track surface may be playing differently than usual, horses that can control or sit close to a pace are at a premium. Keep an eye on early fractions in Race 1 — it'll tell you a lot about how the dirt is playing for the rest of the afternoon.
